Camouflaged object detection (COD) aims to identify the objects that conceal themselves in natural scenes. Accurate COD suffers from a number of challenges associated with low boundary contrast and the large variation of object appearances, e.g., object size and shape. To address these challenges, we propose a novel Context-aware Cross-level Fusion Network (C2F-Net), which fuses context-aware cross-level features for accurately identifying camouflaged objects. Specifically, we compute informative attention coefficients from multi-level features with our Attention-induced Cross-level Fusion Module (ACFM), which further integrates the features under the guidance of attention coefficients. We then propose a Dual-branch Global Context Module (DGCM) to refine the fused features for informative feature representations by exploiting rich global context information. Multiple ACFMs and DGCMs are integrated in a cascaded manner for generating a coarse prediction from high-level features. The coarse prediction acts as an attention map to refine the low-level features before passing them to our Camouflage Inference Module (CIM) to generate the final prediction. We perform extensive experiments on three widely used benchmark datasets and compare C2F-Net with state-of-the-art (SOTA) models. The results show that C2F-Net is an effective COD model and outperforms SOTA models remarkably. Further, an evaluation on polyp segmentation datasets demonstrates the promising potentials of our C2F-Net in COD downstream applications. Serverless computing, also known as “Function as a Service (FaaS)”, is emerging as an event-driven paradigm of cloud computing. In the FaaS model, applications are programmed in the form of functions that are executed and managed separately. Functions are triggered by cloud users and are provisioned dynamically through containers or virtual machines (VMs). The startup delays of containers or VMs usually lead to rather high latency of response to cloud users. Moreover, the communication between different functions generally relies on virtual net devices or shared memory, and may cause extremely high performance overhead. In this paper, we propose Unikernel-as-a-Function (UaaF), a much more lightweight approach to serverless computing. Applications are abstracted as a combination of different functions, and each function are built as an unikernel in which the function is linked with a specified minimum-sized library operating system (LibOS). UaaF offers extremely low startup latency to execute functions, and an efficient communication model to speed up inter-functions interactions. We exploit an new hardware technique (namely VMFUNC) to invoke functions in other unikernels seamlessly (mostly like inter-process communications), without suffering performance penalty of VM Exits. We implement our proof-of-concept prototype based on KVM and deploy UaaF in three unikernels (MirageOS, IncludeOS, and Solo5). Experimental results show that U aaF can significantly reduce the startup latency and memory usage of serverless cloud applications. Moreover, the VMFUNC-based communication model can also significantly improve the performance of function invocations between different unikernels.

Recently, many communities have published their domain knowledge in the form of graphs. A significant trend is that the relations between pairs of nodes in the graph have become so complex that these data can be treated as property graphs. Complex properties imply semantic constraints which can distinguish elements of property graph into different semantic-related aspects. If the property graph can be partitioned according to these aspects, cross-partition communication would be reduced when evaluating SPARQL queries, for the reason that a query can often be evaluated in a single aspect. Conventional graph partition methods, however, pay little attention to semantic constraints in property graphs. To solve this problem, we propose a new property graph partition method for query optimization. First, we propose the property semantic reachable path as basic partition element, with which to capture the semantic-related aspects in a property graph. Second, to combine paths into partitions, we develop a space-efficient algorithm which merges vertices rather than entire paths. Extensive experiments over representative property graph data confirm the effectiveness of our semantic awareness approach. The performance of our approach is comparable with leading competitors, in terms of load balance, data redundancy, and network overhead. © 2019 IEEE.

Machine learning models have shown great success in predicting weather up to two weeks ahead, outperforming process-based benchmarks [1–4]. However, existing approaches mostly focus on the prediction task, and do not incorporate the necessary data assimilation. Moreover, these models suffer from error accumulation in long roll-outs, limiting their applicability to seasonal predictions [5] or climate projections [6]. Here, we introduce Generative Assimilation and Prediction (GAP), a unified deep generative framework for assimilation and prediction of both weather and climate. By learning to quantify the probabilistic distribution of atmospheric states under observational, predictive, and external forcing constraints, GAP excels in a broad range of weather-climate related tasks, including data assimilation, seamless prediction, and climate simulation. In particular, GAP is competitive with state-of-the-art ensemble assimilation, probabilistic weather forecast and seasonal prediction, yields stable millennial simulations, and reproduces climate variability from daily to decadal time scales. © 2025, CC BY-NC-SA.

In this paper, we study a recent and important recommendation problem called heterogeneous one-class collaborative filtering (HOCCF), where we have two different types of one-class feedback, i.e., a set of browses and a set of purchases, for preference learning. Previous methods exploit the browses and purchases by extending some existing methods on modeling homogeneous one-class feedback in an integrative or sequential manner. However, an integrative method may be of high complexity in model training due to the expanded prediction rule, and a sequential method is of inconvenience in deployment because more than one parametric models have to be maintained. In this paper, we convert the HOCCF problem to an adaptive transfer learning task, where we first model browses via a factorization model from a perspective of the role of browser, and then adaptively refine the learned model parameters via purchases from a perspective of the dependent role of purchaser. Based on this conversion, we design a novel solution called role-based adaptive factorization (ROAF), and then derive two specific variants with pairwise preference learning and pointwise preference learning. Finally, we conduct extensive empirical studies on two large datasets, and find that our ROAF is a very promising solution in terms of recommendation accuracy, besides its convenience of one single parametric model in deployment.

In this paper, we study an important recommendation problem with heterogeneous feedback of users' grade scores such as 5-star grade scores and like/dislike binary ratings assigned to items. As a response, we address the problem from a transfer learning perspective, i.e., taking the grade scores as the target data and the binary ratings as the auxiliary data, in order to share knowledge between two different types of data more sufficiently. Technically, besides the observed explicit feedback of grade scores and binary ratings, we propose to exploit the implicit preference context beneath the feedback, which is incorporated into the prediction process of users' grade scores to items. Finally, we develop a novel and generic transfer learning solution, i.e., preference-aware transfer (PAT), which embodies several recent algorithms as parts of our solution and special cases. To verify our novel solution, we then conduct extensive empirical studies on two large and public datasets and find that our PAT performs significantly better than the state-of-the-art methods.

In this paper, we focus on a recently studied problem in recommendation called heterogeneous one-class collaborative filtering (HOCCF), which consists of different types of feedback, e.g., target feedback and auxiliary feedback. The main challenge of HOCCF is how to make good use of the large-scale and ambiguous auxiliary feedback to assist the task of learning users'true preferences. Inspired by a recent method that jointly learns the similarity among items associated with the target feedback and auxiliary feedback in a transfer learning manner, we further extend this method by learning additional similarity among users for better modeling users' preferences. Specifically, we jointly learn the item-based similarity and user-based similarity by leveraging the target feedback and auxiliary feedback, and then aggregate the dual similarity into one single prediction rule for estimating users' preferences, which is thus termed as dual similarity learning model (DSLM). Extensive empirical studies on three public datasets show that our DSLM with dual similarity is more effective in terms of recommendation accuracy, demonstrating that our method strikes a good balance between the item-based similarity and user-based similarity.

Recently, the electrical switching of antiferromagnetic (AFM) order has been intensively investigated because of its application potential in data storage technology. Herein, we report the current switching of the AFM Néel vector in epitaxial Pd/CoO films as a function of temperature. Using combined measurements of Hall resistance (HR) and x-ray magnetic linear dichroism (XMLD) below and above the AFM Néel temperature, we unambiguously identified both magnetic and nonmagnetic contributions to the current-induced HR change. Through magnetic field-induced HR measurements, we quantitatively determined the percentage of current-induced CoO spin switching. Further, we showed that the thermal effect dominated the CoO magnetic switching more in samples with a thinner Pd layer and that samples with a thicker CoO layer required higher thermal activation for current-induced magnetic switching. These results provide a clear and comprehensive picture of current-induced AFM spin switching across the AFM Néel temperature.

Sequence-aware next-item recommendation has recently been studied because of the noteworthy usefulness of the sequential information integrated into recommendation algorithms. Following the development thread of sequential recommendation methods, especially the factored Markov chains segment, we propose a novel sequence-aware factored mixed similarity model (S-FMSM) based on a well-designed fusing similarity model with factored high-order Markov chains (i.e., Fossil). Unlike the baseline methods that model the general representation and the sequential representation in two divided factorization components, we use a factored mixed similarity model that unites the general similarity and the sequential relationship between two successive items for their sequential representation learning. Experiments on six datasets show that our newly introduced general similarity can notably improve the results of the recommended ranking lists. And a study on tuning the prior tradeoff parameter indicates the importance of the general similarity on different datasets.
