IBM has recently introduced the cell broadband engine (Cell BE) Architecture, which contains 8 identical vector processors in an array structure. In the paper the implementation of the 3-D Princeton Ocean Model on the Cell BE is discussed. The area/speed/power tradeoffs of our solution and different hardware implementations are also compared.

Past decades, numerous spectral analysis based algorithms have been proposed for dimensionality reduction, which plays an important role in machine learning and artificial intelligence. However, most of these existing algorithms are developed intuitively and pragmatically, i.e., on the base of the experience and knowledge of experts for their own purposes. Therefore, it will be more informative to provide some a systematic framework for understanding the common properties and intrinsic differences in the algorithms. In this paper, we propose such a framework, i.e., ldquopatch alignmentrdquo, which consists of two stages: part optimization and whole alignment. With the proposed framework, various algorithms including the conventional linear algorithms and the manifold learning algorithms are reformulated into a unified form, which gives us some new understandings on these algorithms.

The paper addresses the issue of implementing a GAPU (global analogic programming unit) on the emulated-digital CNN-UM (cellular neural/nonlinear networks universal machine) architecture. It has been embedded with a flexible Xilinx MicroBlaze soft-core processor to take full advantage of the joint computing power of high-speed arithmetics and programmability. The GAPU implementation accelerates the processing performance of the Falcon architecture by decreasing the I/O communication and it also provides a stand-alone operation, which is capable of controlling complex sophisticated analogic CNN algorithms similar to various visual microprocessors, such as the ACE16k and the Q-Eye in the Bi-i, and eye-RIS cellular vision systems. Our primary aim was to implement an FPGA-based emulated-digital CNN-UM with embedded GAPU for computation intensive, real image-processing tasks.

The Falcon emulated-digital CNN-UM (cellular neural/nonlinear networks universal machine) architecture has been extended by an embedded GAPU (global analogic programming unit) using the flexible Xilinx MicroBlaze soft-core processor to take full advantage of the joint computing power of high-speed distributed arithmetics and programmability. The implemented GAPU provides a stand-alone operation, which is capable of controlling complex sophisticated CNN analogic algorithms similar to various visual microprocessors, such as the ACE4k, ACE16k, and Bi-i vision systems. The quality of the embedded GAPU implementation is demonstrated by analogic algorithms, mainly in which sequences of template operations are required.

Mangrove forests are ecologically and economically important and frequently dominating protected coastal areas in the tropics and subtropics at suitable intertidal zones and are often subjected to disturbances that disrupt the structure of an ecosystem, that change resource availability and that create patterns in vegetation by producing a mosaic of serai stages that ecologists have long recognised as important to landscape-level patch mosaics. Several good reasons justify the need for pursuing a predictive understanding of the ecology of mangrove species competition including the role of disturbance events and the aftermath. A predictive understanding can challenge our assumptions concerning the factors that control plant distribution and abundance and provide techniques for predicting rates of species change ranges in response to disturbances. The aim of this study was to evaluate and predict the impact of canopy disturbances on Gazi Bay mangrove forests and the subsequent vegetation patterns both spatially and temporally. The use of a simple 1D cellular automaton provided a detailed and nearly comprehensive parameterisation of the model by forest structure parameters belonging to the standard measurements of mangrove field surveys. In the study presented, the field data were obtained for disturbance impacts at various spatial scales considering not only the spatial extent of the disturbance but also its particular location. For this, multiple sampling transects were selected a priori, based on the vegetation patterns observed on Quickbird satellite image (2002) of Gazi, to reflect major ecological zones and vegetation transitions in space. Earlier field studies already revealed different population trajectories in some cases for the same pairwise species interactions, which are consistent with the hypothesis that different scales of disturbances may affect succession trends. This paper designs and implements a virtual demonstration system for furniture. First, in order to let users virtually dispose furniture, showing the best effect of furniture in the virtual environment, we model different series of a company's furniture and common houses, and create panoramic pictures and transition videos with 3D Max and imageprocessing tools, realizing walkthrough of the furnished house. Secondly, our system adopts Open Scene Graph(OSG)platform to realize virtual demonstration of the furniture. Users can add?delete and move the 3D furniture in the virtual houses. Third, the system supports furniture demonstration in a real house. Users can import the photos of their own houses, and then dispose the selected furniture on these photos, to see the whole effect of furniture in their own real houses. The experiment result shows that the system makes customers be personally on the scene and can boost up users' purchase desire.

In the area of mechanical, aerospace, chemical and civil engineering the solution of partial differential equations (PDEs) has been one of the most important problems of mathematics for a long time. In this field, one of the most exciting areas is the simulation of fluid flow, which involves for example problems of air, sea and land vehicle motion. In this paper a CNN-UM based solver of 2D inviscid, adiabatic, compressible fluids will be presented. The governing equations are solved by using first- and second-order numerical methods. Unfortunately the necessity the coupled multi-layered computational structure with non-linear, space-variant templates does not make it possible to utilize the huge computing power of the analog CNN-UM chips. To improve the performance of our solution emulated digital CNN-UM implemented on FPGA has been used. Properties of the implemented specialized architecture is examined in terms of area, speed and accuracy.

Virtual houses and furniture are built from actual schedule drawing data by 3D-modeling technology. This paper mainly proposes four ways of demonstrating virtual house on Internet, including indoor virtual tour, fix-position panorama browse, interactively indoor touring and globe view of house layout. Taking advantage of these ways, customers can navigate in the virtual house environment through Internet, observing the layout of houses from different angles and performing some interactive actions to show house style clearly.
