Smart energy networks (SENs) face numerous challenges related to security, reliability, operational uncertainties, and increasing penetration of renewable energies (REs), necessitating advanced methodologies for adequacy and security assessment. This study delves into the utilization of machine learning-driven approaches (MLDAs) to quantify reliability and gauge the dependability of future sustainable SENs. By autonomously acquiring knowledge from datasets, MLDAs offer swift and reliable evaluations, surpassing traditional methodologies. The integration of artificial intelligence (AI) in enhancing power system reliability is highlighted, emphasizing the importance of extensive datasets and evolving AI algorithms. Data-driven approaches empower energy network operators to proactively identify and mitigate security risks, enhancing the reliability of critical infrastructure systems. The research underscores the significance of constructing reliable databases, addressing challenges in real-time operations, and ensuring the performance and trustworthiness of machine learning (ML) algorithms. Overall, the study showcases the potential of ML techniques in revolutionizing reliability management and risk assessment in smart energy networks, paving the way for sustainable and reliable power systems.

Clean air actions （CAAs） in China have been linked to considerable benefits in public ***,whether the beneficial effects of CAAs are equally distributed geographically is *** high-resolution maps of the distributions of major air pollutants (fine particulate matter[PM2.5]and ozone[O3]) and population,we aimed to track spatiotemporal changes in health impacts from,and geographic inequality embedded in,the reduced exposures to PM2.5and O3from 2013 to *** used a method established by the Global Burden of Diseases *** analyzing the changes in loss of life expectancy（LLE） attributable to PM2.5and O3,we calculated the gain of life expectancy （GLE） to quantify the health benefits of the air-quality ***,we assessed the geographic inequality embedded in the GLE using the Gini index （GI）.Based on risk assessments of PM2.5and O3,during the first stage of CAAs（2013 to 2017）,the mean GLE was 1.87 *** of the sum of the GLE was disproportionally distributed in about one quarter of the population exposed （GI 0.44）.During the second stage of CAAs（2017 to 2020）,the mean GLE increased to 3.94 months and geographic inequality decreased （GI 0.18）.According to our assessments,CAAs were enhanced,from the first to second stages,in terms of not only preventing premature mortality but also ameliorating health *** enhancements were related to increased sensitivity to the health effects of air pollution and synergic control of PM2.5and *** findings will contribute to optimizing future CAAs.

As the penetration rate of renewable energy continues to rise, grid connection standards now require renewable energy systems to achieve fault ride-through during grid faults and provide voltage support. However, voltage support occupies converter capacity, reducing its available active power output and threatening system frequency in high renewable ratio systems. The virtual synchronous machine (VSGs) can regulate voltage and frequency similar to conventional generators, although inrush currents pose a threat to inverter safety. This paper proposes an optimization strategy for active and reactive power during grid faults for VSGs. Both voltage and frequency support are considered for VSGs. The rate of change of frequency (RoCoF) and inrush current constraints are constructed and incorporated into the optimal model to guarantee the security of the frequency and prevent the damage of the converter. Case studies validate the effectiveness of the proposed model.

Most recent intelligent systems study the perception or policy modules independently but ignore the inter-connection between them, which results in low information efficiency and high network redundancy, in the end, leads to the incomplete utilization of network potential and poor system-level end-to-end intelligence. This paper proposes an integrated end-to-end network that adapts to multi-domain inputs and multi-function outputs. 'Integration' is defined in this paper in mainly three aspects: network structure level, optimization level, and functional level. The integrated network architecture is capable of fusing multiple raw sensory inputs and outputting multiple perceptions and decisions simultaneously. We first implement the integrated system in a virtual simulation environ-ment and investigate the domain transformation methods to real world. Comprehensive experiment results in both virtual and real environments show that our proposed system can behave normally under exploration, target-driven navigation and target shooting tasks. © 2022 IEEE.

Recognizing fault types of machinery system is a fundamental but challenging task in industrial application. Although remarkable progress has been attained by learning fault features and predicting the corresponded fault type with deep neural networks, the existing fault diagnosis pipelines usually learn non-discriminative information. Contextual sequence dependency between the localized time fragments is often ignored. To deal with these problem, a recurrent attention framework with reinforcement learning is proposed to find a series of informative features of local time fragments related to different faults in an iterative manner. Fault labels are further predicted on these time fragments. The proposed framework also explicitly models long-term dependencies among these attentional time fragments to capture historical fault information. Experiments on two typical machinery systems, bearing system and hydraulic system, show that the proposed framework achieves superior diagnosis performance and increases no computation burden on CPU. © 2024, The Authors. This study explores the impact of phone usage on train driver performance, a critical aspect influencing the safety of railroad operations. The persistent problem of phone distractions, which severely impair situational awareness and contribute to accidents, necessitates innovative solutions to enhance operational safety. Leveraging advancements in technology, this study introduces a novel approach combining electroencephalogram (EEG)-based analysis with deep learning algorithms to assess the effects of phone usage on the attention states of train drivers. Utilizing a full-type train simulator to replicate real-life scenarios, this study conducts an experimental design involving scenarios with and without phone engagement, aiming to provide a comprehensive assessment of phone usage on performance in critical situations. The deep learning model employed achieved an impressive classification accuracy of approximately 85.6% in distinguishing attention states among 25 participants, with high precision and recall values indicating its efficacy in detecting phone interaction. Moreover, findings reveal that phone usage leads to a 1.4 times increase in response time to situational awareness, significantly affecting driver performance. These findings highlight the significant impact of phone usage on train driver attention and underscore the potential of EEG-based analysis and deep learning in improving railroad safety measures. This study contributes to the growing body of safety literature by focusing on train drivers, offering fresh insights and practical implications for enhancing the safety and efficiency of railroad operations. © 2024, The Authors. Optimal design and techno-economic analysis of a desert off-grid photovoltaic-to-hydrogen system integrated with pipeline networks

Addressing the challenge of harnessing remote solar resources for sustainable hydrogen production, this study presents a scalable off-grid photovoltaic-to-hydrogen (OgPVtH) system. We propose a bottom-up design methodology for the OgPVtH system, capturing the interconnections between land, water, and energy at micro and macro levels. At the micro level, we propose and consider the dynamic water-power-hydrogen characteristics of electrolyzers in a precise capacity allocation optimization model. At the macro level, we consider pipeline dynamic operating pressure constraints and establish a robust method for generating water-hydrogen pipeline network topologies. We conduct a real case study in the Hobq Desert. It reveals a levelized cost of hydrogen (LCOH) of 2.59 $/kg for the proposed OgPVtH system, indicating a 3.0 % lower cost compared to coal-based hydrogen production with carbon capture and storage (CCS) and 25 %-50 % lower cost compared to bioenergy to hydrogen, which demonstrates the system's economic competitiveness. The precise modeling of water-power-hydrogen characteristics and topologies can reduce LCOH by 0.35 $/kg and 0.01 $/kg, respectively. Sensitivity analysis highlights the trade-offs between investment in transmission and storage due to operational volatility, with an optimal hydrogen flow rate volatility of 80 % minimizing the total LCOH. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

In this research, the Human Following Robot (HFR) prototype has been designed and implemented using YOLO v3-Tiny and Tensor Flow Lite on Raspberry Pi hardware named Rewang. The HFR Rewang is designed to assist aircraft technicians by bringing maintenance tool kits to aircraft shelters. Rewang's movement is based on a camera as a vision sensor following the movement of human entities. Image input is processed by YOLO v3-Tiny through the determination of the bounding box, the calculation of Euclidean Distance, and the determination of the pixel value of the camera as the basis of Rewang's movement which is regulated by an L298N driver motor that controls two Direct Current (DC) motors for the left and right wheels. The test results show that Rewang can move at an average speed of 0.18 m/s at 2 m with a travel time of 11 seconds with a light intensity of more than 250 lux. The minimum and maximum distance of object detection is as far as 120 cm and 400 cm, with an object detection accuracy of 95.8%. Rewang allows the HFR to have a larger carrying capacity to bring more complete aircraft maintenance tools and is prospective for other aerospace and general applications.

Modularization facilitates the adaptability of cyber-physical production systems (CPPSs) with a variety of collaborative tasks. Various production rules can be captured by signal temporal logic (STL) specifications imposed on interconnected multi-agent systems (MASs). In this paper, we focus on the controller synthesis of STL tasks for interconnected MASs to accomplish collaborative tasks in modular CPPSs. Firstly, a class of STL specifications characterizing tasks by the combination of fixed-time reachability and finite-time persistence tasks is proposed, which encompasses a large class of production specifications for the MAS. Secondly, the acyclic decomposition of the global STL formula is constructed to enable conflict-free collaborative tasks and unidirectional couplings between subsystems. By establishing the equivalence between the proposition and the state set of the MAS, necessary and sufficient conditions are respectively proposed for the satisfaction of reachability and persistence tasks. In addition, an algorithm is presented to synthesize controllers for the MAS with the global STL specification based on local controllers of subsystems. An illustrative example is given to show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

This paper presents a nonlinear controller for the upper platform of a catamaran in the presence of external time-varying disturbance induced by wind or wave. To handle disturbances, an observer is employed. Designed using the backstepping method, the controller effectively maintains the platform within a small neighborhood of 10 −3 (m or rad) of the desired attitude and the observer monitors external disturbance in real time. Simulation results validate the strategy, demonstrating the platform’s ability to consistently maintain an ideal posture in the presence of dynamic disturbance.
