Data protection and provenance in cloud of things environment: research challenges

Internet of things are increasingly being deployed over the cloud (also referred to as cloud of things) to provide a broader range of services. However, there are serious challenges of CoT in the data protection and security provenance. This paper proposes a data privacy protection and provenance model (DPSPM) based on CoT. It can protect the privacy data of the users and trace the source of leaked data. In detail, security encryption and watermarking algorithms are proposed. Meanwhile, we use the improved k-anonymity data masking algorithm and pseudo-row watermarking algorithm in this scheme. Those algorithms can carry out security control over the whole process of data publishing, especially in data encryption, data masking and provenance verification. Finally, the experimental results show that our scheme has good efficiency. It is proved that the data masking time is proportional to the parameters k and L, the results also show good robustness to the common database watermarking attacks. © 2020 Inderscience Enterprises Ltd.

Realizing Generalized Zero-Shot Learning (GZSL) based on large models is emerging as a prevailing trend. However, most existing methods merely regard large models as black boxes, solely leveraging the features output by the final layer while disregarding potential performance enhancements from other layers. Indeed, numerous researchers have visually depicted variations in the features learned across different layers of neural networks. Motivated by this observation, we propose a Vision Transformer (ViT)-based GZSL method named Depth-Aware Multi-Modal ViT (DAM2ViT), which exploits multi-level features of ViT. DAM2ViT incorporates a multi-modal interaction block to align semantic information of categories across multiple layers, thereby augmenting the model's capacity to learn associations between visual and semantic spaces. Extensive experiments conducted on three benchmark datasets (i.e., CUB, SUN, AWA2) have showcased that DAM2ViT achieves competitive results compared to state-of-the-art methods.

Objectives: To prospectively investigate associations of frailty and other predictor variables with functional recovery and health outcomes in middle-aged and older patients with trauma. Design: Single-center prospective cohort study. Setting: Emergency department of Wan Fang Hospital in Taiwan. Participants: Trauma patients aged 45 and older. Measurements: Frailty was assessed with the Clinical Frailty Scale (CFS). Injury mechanisms, pre-existing diseases, and fracture locations were recorded at baseline. The primary outcome was functional recovery assessed using the Barthel Index (BI). Secondary outcomes were new care needs, unscheduled return visits, and falls 3 months postinjury. Results: A total of 588 participants were included in the final analysis. For every one-point increase in the CFS, the multivariable-adjusted odds ratio (OR, 95% confidence interval [CI]) of failure to retain the preinjury BI was 1.34 (1.16–1.55);associations were consistent across levels of age and injury severities. Significant joint associations of frailty and age with poor functional recovery were observed. CFS was also associated with new care needs (OR for every one-point increase, 1.36, 95% CI, 1.17–1.58), unscheduled return visits (OR 1.26, 95% CI, 1.04–1.51), and falls (OR 1.23, 95% CI, 1.01–1.51). Other variables associated with failure to retain preinjury BI included road traffic accident and presence of hip fracture. Conclusion: Frailty was significantly associated with poor functional and health outcomes regardless of injury severity in middle-aged and older patients with trauma. Injury mechanisms and fracture locations were also significant predictors of functional recovery postinjury. © 2023 American Association for Geriatric Psychiatry

Mission planning for repeated multi-spacecraft non-contact debris removal

Non-contact debris removal methods are fuel-efficient in a single operation compared to contact-based strategies as spacecraft don’t need to match debris velocity. To comprehensively analyze this scheme, maneuvering schemes for maximum debris removal with minimum fuel consumption, including task assignment, sequence planning, and trajectory planning, must be formulated. The coupling between variables’ dimensions and optimization results in task assignment poses challenges, as debris removal is repetitive and uncertain, leading to a vast search space. This paper proposes a novel Greedy Randomized Adaptive Search Procedure with Large Neighborhood and Crossover Mechanisms (GRASP-LNCM) to address this problem. The hybrid dynamic iteration mechanism improves computational efficiency and enhances the optimality of results. The model innovatively considers unsuccessful single removal by using a quantitative method to assess removal percentage. In addition, to improve the efficiency of sequence and trajectory planning, a Suboptimal Search Algorithm (SSA) based on the Lambert property and accelerated Multi-Revolution Lambert Problem (MRLP) solving strategy is established. Finally, a real Iridium-33 debris removal mission is studied. The simulation demonstrates that the proposed algorithm achieves state-of-the-art performance in several typical scenarios. Compared to the contact-based scheme, the new one is simpler, saving more fuel under certain conditions.

The Critical Role of PI3K/AKT/mTOR Signaling in BCP Ceramic-Induced Osteogenesis

Increasing studies demonstrate biphasic calcium phosphate (BCP) ceramics can induce bone regeneration. But the underlying molecular mechanisms involved are still poorly understood. This work was proposed to investigate how PI3k/AKT/mTOR signaling influenced the osteogenesis mediated by BCP ceramics. The results showed that a co-culture with BCP ceramics promoted the proliferation of murine bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BMSCs) in a time-dependent manner. But the resulting cell proliferation was then suppressed by the selective inhibition of either PI3k, AKT, or mTOR by LY294002, MK2206, or RAP, respectively. Next, we confirmed that BCP ceramics up-regulated the phosphorylation levels of AKT and mTOR, suggesting the ability of BCP ceramics to drive the activation of PI3k/AKT/mTOR signaling in BMSCs. Further, the blockade of PI3k/AKT/mTOR signaling prevented the BCP ceramics from up-regulating the expression of genes encoding OPN and RUNX2 indicating osteogenic differentiation and VEGF referring to pro-angiogenesis by BMSCs, and suppressed the infiltration of stem cells and new bone formation in the implants following intra-muscular implantation of BCP ceramics in the mice. Therefore, our results suggested that PI3K/AKT/mTOR signaling played a critical regulatory role in BCP ceramic-induced osteogenesis. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Network robustness is critical for various societal and industrial networks again malicious attacks. In particular, connectivity robustness and controllability robustness reflect how well a networked system can maintain its connectedness and controllability against destructive attacks, which can be quantified by a sequence of values that record the remaining connectivity and controllability of the network after a sequence of node- or edge-removal attacks. Traditionally, robustness is determined by attack simulations, which are computationally very time-consuming or even practically infeasible. In this paper, an improved method for network robustness prediction is developed based on learning feature representation using convolutional neural network (LFR-CNN). In this scheme, higher-dimensional network data are compressed to lower-dimensional representations, and then passed to a CNN to perform robustness prediction. Extensive experimental studies on both synthetic and real-world networks, both directed and undirected, demonstrate that 1) the proposed LFR-CNN performs better than other two state-of-the-art prediction methods, with significantly lower prediction errors;2) LFR-CNN is insensitive to the variation of the network size, which significantly extends its applicability;3) although LFR-CNN needs more time to perform feature learning, it can achieve accurate prediction faster than attack simulations;4) LFR-CNN not only can accurately predict network robustness, but also provides a good indicator for connectivity robustness, better than the classical spectral measures. © 2022, CC BY.

Electrospinning has exhibited excellent benefits to treat the trauma for tissue engineering due to its produced micro/nano fibrous structure. It can effectively adhere to the tissue surface for long-term continuous therapy. This paper develops a robotic electrospinning platform for endoluminal therapy. The platform consists of a continuum manipulator, the electrospinning device, and the actuation unit. The continuum manipulator has two bending sections to facilitate the steering of the tip needle for a controllable spinning direction. Non-circular joint profile is carefully designed to enable a constant length of the centreline of a continuum manipulator for stable fluid transmission inside it. Experiments are performed on a bronchus phantom, and the steering ability and bending limitation in each direction are also investigated. The endoluminal electrospinning is also fulfilled by a trajectory following and points targeting experiments. The effective adhesive area of the produced fibre is also illustrated. The proposed robotic electrospinning shows its feasibility to precisely spread more therapeutic drug to construct fibrous structure for potential endoluminal treatments. © 2021 IEEE

Optimal convergence rates of totally asynchronous optimization

Asynchronous optimization algorithms are at the core of modern machine learning and resource allocation systems. However, most convergence results consider bounded information delays and several important algorithms lack guarantees when they operate under total asynchrony. In this paper, we derive explicit convergence rates for the proximal incremental aggregated gradient (PIAG) and the asynchronous block-coordinate descent (Async-BCD) methods under a specific model of total asynchrony, and show that the derived rates are order-optimal. The convergence bounds provide an insightful understanding of how the growth rate of the delays deteriorates the convergence times of the algorithms.
