Solar pores are intense concentrations of magnetic flux that emerge through the Sun’s photosphere. When compared to sunspots, they are much smaller in diameter and hence can be impacted and buffeted by neighbouring granular activity to generate significant magnetohydrodynamic (MHD) wave energy flux within their confines. However, observations of solar pores from ground-based telescope facilities may struggle to capture subtle motions synonymous with higher-order MHD wave signatures due to seeing effects produced in the Earth’s atmosphere. Hence, we have exploited timely seeing-free and high-quality observations of four small magnetic pores from the High Resolution Telescope (HRT) of the Polarimetric and Helioseismic Imager (PHI) on board the Solar Orbiter spacecraft, during its first close perihelion passage in March 2022 (at a distance of 0.5 au from the Sun). Through acquisition of data under stable observing conditions, we have been able to measure the area fluctuations and horizontal displacements of the solar pores. Cross correlations between perturbations in intensity, area, line-of-sight velocity, and magnetic fields, coupled with the first-time application of novel Proper Orthogonal Decomposition (POD) techniques on the boundary oscillations, provide a comprehensive diagnosis of the embedded MHD waves as sausage and kink modes. Additionally, the previously elusive m = 2 fluting mode is identified in the most magnetically isolated of the four pores. An important consideration lies in how the identified wave modes contribute towards the transfer of energy into the upper solar atmosphere. We find that the four pores examined have approximately 56%, 72%, 52%, and 34% of their total wave energy associated with the identified sausage modes, and around 23%, 17%, 39%, and 49% to their kink modes, respectively, while the first pore also has around an 11% contribution linked to the fluting mode. This study compared the aroma-active compounds in 14 brands of commercially infant formula and investigated their changes during ambient storage after opening for 2 months. A total of 29 major aroma-active compounds were detected in infant formula. From the PCA and heatmap analysis, a total of 14 brands of infant formula were classified into 3 groups, the second group contained JLB-Y, AY and FH-F, of which 2-furanmethanol and (E,E)-3,5-octadien-2-one were mainly compounds, the third group contained YL and JLB-L, the characteristic flavor compounds in this group were mainly hexanal, heptanal, etc. Aldehydes, as the main volatile substances, account for more than half of the total volatiles. Nearly half of the aldehydes showed more significant changes after storage, e.g. hexanal, octanal, (E)-2-octenal and 3-methylbutyraldehyde. The YL and YP-Q produced more saturated aldehydes after storage, the concentration of hexanal in YL-2m and YP-Q-2m was 2138.5 μg/kg and 2004.1μg/kg, respectively. The concentrations of heptanal, octanal, and nonanal also increased relatively significantly, which may lead to a distinct rancid flavor in YL and YP-Q. Besides, among the ketones, (E,E)-3,5-octadien-2-one showed the greatest change after storage, especially in JLB-L. According to sensory evaluation experiments, the milky flavor of infant formulas decreased and fatty, rancid, fishy and grassy flavors were found to have increased to different extents after storage. The current information gap on the concentration and evolution of volatile compounds in commercially available infant formula is filled by this study.

We propose a fundamental theorem for eco-environmental surface modelling(FTEEM) in order to apply it into the fields of ecology and environmental science more easily after the fundamental theorem for Earth’s surface system modeling(FTESM). The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei(BTH) region is taken as a case area to conduct empirical studies of algorithms for spatial upscaling, spatial downscaling, spatial interpolation, data fusion and model-data assimilation, which are based on high accuracy surface modelling(HASM), corresponding with corollaries of FTEEM. The case studies demonstrate how eco-environmental surface modelling is substantially improved when both extrinsic and intrinsic information are used along with an appropriate method of HASM. Compared with classic algorithms, the HASM-based algorithm for spatial upscaling reduced the root-meansquare error of the BTH elevation surface by 9 m. The HASM-based algorithm for spatial downscaling reduced the relative error of future scenarios of annual mean temperature by 16%. The HASM-based algorithm for spatial interpolation reduced the relative error of change trend of annual mean precipitation by 0.2%. The HASM-based algorithm for data fusion reduced the relative error of change trend of annual mean temperature by 70%. The HASM-based algorithm for model-data assimilation reduced the relative error of carbon stocks by 40%. We propose five theoretical challenges and three application problems of HASM that need to be addressed to improve FTEEM.

With the fast proliferation of intermittent renewable energy sources and fluctuations in load demand, power systems need to withstand an increasing number of disturbances that may affect the system frequency. In this paper, the highest acceptable penetration level of wind generation is formulated and calculated with and without considering operating reserve constraints as a function of equivalent governor response and system inertia. Afterward, the feasibility of wind turbine participation in the power system frequency regulation task is investigated and the minimum required wind turbine frequency response is calculated as a function of penetration level. This study uses a discretized model of dynamic system frequency response to estimate the minimum frequency after contingencies. To investigate the proposed methods, some sensitivity analyses are carried out on IEEE 39-bus test system. Simulations results illustrate a more secure and reliable operation of the power system when the wind turbines participate in the frequency regulation task.

In modern era, one of the rising power quality (PQ) concern is harmonics distortion (HD). The HD is usually produced by increase in the utilization of nonlinear user loads at domestic level. It not only spoils the PQ but also have harmful effects on electrical appliances. So, this paper presents a new approach to mitigate the HD in home appliances rapidly by utilizing the active band pass filter (ABPF). The fast Fourier transform (FFT) technique is employed for the detection of harmonics in appliances. The band pass filter dramatically affects the response time of active filter. The suggested control methodology is capable to eliminate harmonics from distorted input voltage waveform and provides a pure sinusoidal waveform. The prototype of this model is also implemented. Experimental results along with simulation show that the proposed model is quite effective in eliminating HD despite load variations and also useful to compensate the reactive power in electronic home appliances. Hence, this technique is cost effective for domestic users with high quality performance in all aspects.

A heuristic approach for lactate threshold estimation for training decision-making: An accessible and easy to use solution for recreational runners

In this work, a heuristic as operational tool to estimate the lactate threshold and to facilitate its integration into the training process of recreational runners is proposed. To do so, we formalize the principles for the lactate threshold estimation from empirical data and an iterative methodology that enables experience based learning. This strategy arises as a robust and adaptive approach to solve data analysis problems. We compare the results of the heuristic with the most commonly used protocol by making a first quantitative error analysis to show its reliability. Additionally, we provide a computational algorithm so that this quantitative analysis can be easily performed in other lactate threshold protocols. With this work, we have shown that a heuristic (%60 of endurance running speed reserve), serves for the same purpose of the most commonly used protocol in recreational runners, but improving its operational limitations of accessibility and consistent use. In-situ exsolution is widely considered to be an efficient and cost-effective method to enhance the electrochemical performance of a ceramic anode in solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs). In this study, by controlling the non-stoichiometry of Sr2Fe1.5Mo0.5O6-δ with A-site doping, evenly distributed Fe nano-particles (~100 nm) were obtained on surface of La0.5Sr1.5Fe1.5Mo0.5O6-δ (LSFM) when treated in hydrogen. In a redox environment, excellent exsolution-dissolution reversibility was also demonstrated. Electrical conductivity relaxation (ECR) and electrochemical impedance spectroscopy (EIS) were employed to evaluate the surface reaction kinetics change during exsolution. The surface exchange coefficient (kex) was increased by 1.5 to 2 times with Fe exsolution. Based on distribution of relaxation time (DRT) analysis, the polarization resistance (Rp) associating with surface process was reduced in the first few hours. Both results revealed an enhanced surface reaction kinetics which mainly benefits from the high catalytic activity of exsolved nano-particles to H2 adsorption and dissociation process. © The Electrochemical Society.

Coastal wetlands have disproportionately high carbon (C) sequestration rates and long-term sustainable C sequestration capacity, contributing to the mitigation of global climate change. Previous studies have mainly focused on the assessment of bulk soil organic C (SOC) in coastal wetlands, neglecting the form in which C is stored, its stability and driving factors, which hinders our in-depth understanding of C sequestration capacity and underlying mechanisms. In this study, we sampled 157 plots across coastal wetlands in China, covering tropical, subtropical, and temperate climates to gain a detailed understanding of the distribution, stability, and control mechanisms of SOC fractions. Our results showed that the SOC in the topsoil (0–10 cm) was co-dominated by mineral-associated organic C (MAOC) and particulate organic C (POC) in mudflats, temperate and subtropical salt marshes, and subtropical mangroves, but not in tropical mangroves. The content of dissolved organic C (DOC, 0.12 ± 0.08 g kg −1 ) was only 1.15 ± 0.06 % of bulk SOC. The POC became more dominant relative to MAOC and DOC as SOC content increased. We found that soil properties (total nitrogen, bulk density, and particle size, etc), were the primary explanatory variables for SOC fractions content and persistence, accounting for 58 %, 64 %, 38 %, 53 %, and 34 % of total variation in MAOC, POC, DOC, MAOC/SOC, and C/N, respectively. Although climate and vegetation factors did not directly control C contents in soil matrix and persistence, they interacted strongly with edaphic variables explaining 8 %, 16 %, 11 %, 12 %, and 13 % of the total variation in the above variables, respectively. Our results suggest that the increase in SOC, especially POC, reduced its persistence, so the implementation of C management strategies in coastal wetlands should integrate SOC sequestration and stability to maximize benefits.
