A Novel Energy-Driven Architecture for Wireless Sensor Networks

This paper proposes a novel Energy-Driven Architecture (EDA) as a durable architecture and considers almost all principal energy constituents of wireless sensor networks applications. By creating a single overall model, a tolerable formulation is then offered to communicate the total energy use of a wireless sensor network application regarding the energy constituents. The formulation provides a tangible illustration for analyzing the performance of a wireless sensor network application, optimizing its constituent's operations, as well as creating more energy saving applications. The simulations are employed to show the feasibility of our model and also energy formulation.

Trends of Extreme Precipitation in Eastern China and Their Possible Causes

Significant increases of heavy precipitation and decreases of light precipitation have been reported over widespread regions of the globe. Global warming and effects of anthropogenic aerosols have both been proposed as possible causes of these changes. We examine data from urban and rural meteorological stations in eastern China （1955-2011） and compare them with Global Precipitation Climatology Project （GPCP） data （1979-2007） and reanalysis data in various latitude zones to study changes in precipitation extremes. Significant decreases in light precipitation and increases in heavy precipitation are found at both rural and urban stations, as well as low latitudes over the ocean, while total precipitation shows little change. Characteristics of these changes and changes in the equatorial zone and other latitudes suggest that global warming rather than aerosol effects is the primary cause of the changes. In eastern China, increases of annual total dry days （28 days） and ） 10 consecutive dry days （36%） are due to the decrease in light precipitation days, thereby establishing a causal link among global warming, changes in precipitation extremes, and higher meteorological risk of floods and droughts. Further, results derived from the GPCP data and reanalysis data suggest that the causal link exists over widespread regions of the globe.

In this paper, the problem of rudder-roll damping control for a class of cruise keeping ships subject to both actuator fault and state saturation is investigated. A manoeuvring and rudder control model of marine vessels is firstly reviewed based on the existing literature. Actuator faults which including partial loss of rudder effectiveness and actuator-bias faults are considered in the model. Then a switching control strategy is developed to compensate for the actuator faults and to guarantee the stability of the rudder-roll damping control system. Moreover, some relationship regarding state saturation bounds, actuator fault limits and control parameters are analyzed in this paper. Finally, simulation results are given to illustrate the proposed procedures and their effectiveness.

In his comments, Wang cites a number of works to dispute the conclusion in our previous work, which attributes the observed decreases/increases in light/heavy precipitation in eastern China primarily to global warming rather than the regional aerosol effect. However, most of the cited works （admittedly, including our previous work）, employ correlation analysis, which has little bearing on the cause--effect relationship. Theoretical analyses and/or modeling studies are needed to ascertain the cause-effect relationship. We argue that theoretical analyses and modeling results show that global warming is the primary cause of the widely observed phenomena of suppression of light precipitation and enhancement of heavy precipitation across the globe, including in eastern China.

In this paper, a cooperation method between wind farm and Electric vehicle battery switch station (EVBSS) was proposed. In the pursuit of maximizing their own benefits, the cooperation between wind farm and EVBSS was formulated as a Stackelberg game model by treating them as decision makers in different status. As the leader, wind farm will determine the charging/discharging price to induce the charging and discharging behavior of EVBSS reasonably. Through peak load shifting, wind farm could increase its profits by selling more wind power to the power grid during time interval with a higher purchase price. As the follower, EVBSS will charge or discharge according to the price determined by wind farm. Through optimizing the charging /discharging strategy, EVBSS will try to charge with a lower price and discharge with a higher price in order to increase its profits. Since the possible charging /discharging strategy of EVBSS is known, the wind farm will take the strategy into consideration while deciding the charging /discharging price, and will adjust the price accordingly to increase its profits. The case study proved that the proposed cooperation method and model were feasible and effective.

Red tides off the Japanese coast caused serious damages to aquaculture industries in every year (Honjo 1994). To reduce fisheries damage due to red tide, it is important to inform aquaculturist of red tides in short-term scale distribution. We developed a monitoring system which collects real-time data with a buoy to detect the occurrence of red tides on the sea. Our system can obtain data from a buoy drifted on the sea. The buoy has a GPS and two kinds of sensors that measure temperature and illuminance, and can connect to the Internet using mobile phone network. This paper describes a composition of our system, and a visualization of these data. In our experiments, the observing data was collected by the buoy in the middle of the Yatsushiro Sea. According to the experimental results, it was found that the movement of the buoy was mainly driven by tide current, rather than wind. This paper describes a super high-speed vision platform (HSVP) that can process a 12-bit, gray level, 1024×1024 image at 12500 frames per second (fps) simultaneously by implementing parallel hardware logic on a large size field programmable gate array (FPGA) platform. Multiple experimental results demonstrate that our platform can calculate a 4096-level brightness-histogram and 4096-level edge-intensity-histogram for 1024×1024 images at 12500 fps, including the zeroth and first moment features for centroid calculation.

Analysis of error propagation in two-way-ranging-based cooperative positioning system

Alternative radio-navigation technologies aim at providing continuous navigation solution even if one cannot use GNSS (Global Navigation Satellite system). In shadowing region such as indoor environment, GNSS signal is no longer available and the alternative navigation system should be used together with GNSS to provide seamless positioning. For soldiers in battlefield where GNSS signal is jammed or in street battle, the alternative navigation system should work without positioning infrastructure. Moreover, the radio-navigation system should have scalability as well as high accuracy performance. This paper presents a TWR (Two-Way-Ranging)-based cooperative positioning system (CPS) that does not require location infrastructure. It is assumed that some members of CPS can obtain GNSS-based position and they are called mobile anchors. Other members unable to receive GNSS signal compute their position using TWR measurements with mobile anchors and neighboring members. Error propagation in CPS is analytically studied in this paper. Error budget for TWR measurements is modeled first. Next, location error propagation in CPS is derived in terms of range errors. To represent the location error propagation in the CPS, Location Error Propagation Indicator (LEPI) is proposed in this paper. Simulation results show that location error of tags in CPS is mainly influenced by the number of hops from anchors to the tag to be positioned as well as the network geometry of CPS. © ICROS 2015.

To evaluate associations by EGFR mutation status for lung adenocarcinoma risk among never-smoking Asian women, we conducted a meta-analysis of 11 loci previously identified in genome-wide association studies (GWAS). Genotyping in an additional 10,780 never-smoking cases and 10,938 never-smoking controls from Asia confirmed associations with eight known single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs). Two new signals were observed at genome-wide significance (P < 5 × 10-8), namely, rs7216064 (17q24.3, BPTF), for overall lung adenocarcinoma risk, and rs3817963 (6p21.3, BTNL2) which is specific to cases with EGFR mutations. In further sub-analyses by EGFR status, rs9387478 (ROS1/DCBLD1) and rs2179920 (HLA-DPB1) showed stronger estimated associations in EGFR-positive compared to EGFR-negative cases. Comparison of the overall associations with published results in Western populations revealed that the majority of these findings were distinct, underscoring the importance of distinct contributing factors for smoking and non-smoking lung cancer. Our results extend the catalogue of regions associated with lung adenocarcinoma in non-smoking Asian women and highlight the importance of how the germline could inform risk for specific tumour mutation patterns, which could have important translational implications.
