A dynamic programming algorithm for QoS-aware replica placement in distributed caching systems

The rapid growth of new information services, especially like new media services, providing content distribution to clients with good quality of service(QoS) while retaining efficient is a great challenge. This paper investigates the QoS-aware replica placement problem (QRPP) for distributed caching system. We propose a dynamic programming algorithm for the problem in general graph, it first ensures the QoS requirement is satisfied of each request, then places the replica along the request forward path to minimize the total cost. The simulation results show the dynamic programming algorithm can achive a good balance between the access latency and the requested availability. When the request is more concentrated, the dynamic programming algorithm can have better performance than the MODULO and LRU both in access latency and requested availability.

The very fast transient overvoltages(VFTO) are generated during operation of disconnect switch (DS) of gas insulated switchgear(GIS). Improving the effectiveness of power system restoration planning becomes more important, since a higher NERC standard will be implemented in the near future. Standard EOP-005-2 concerns about the increased risk of large-scale system blackout due to the increased degree of uncertainty, as a very likely consequence of dynamic market activities, integration of large-scale less-dispatchable energy resources and other factors threatening the power system security. This paper presents a discussion of some of the important planning issues for power system restoration following a large-scale blackout. These issues were raised from several system restoration planning projects completed by the authors for several utility companies in Central United States and South China. Current practices at these companies are summarized. In addition, some bottleneck problems in effective restoration planning and possible solutions are suggested.

Fractional order (FO) filters have been investigated in this paper, with band-pass (BP) and band-stop (BS) characteristics, which can not be achieved with conventional integer order filters with orders lesser then two. The quality factors for symmetric and asymmetric magnitude response have been optimized using real coded Genetic Algorithm (GA) for a user specified center frequency. Parametric influence of the FO filters on the magnitude response is also illustrated with credible numerical simulations.

Previous studies have reported that postural coordination patterns change as a function of translation frequency. However, the effect of inclined support surface on postural strategy was not clear. Therefore, the purpose of this study is to investigate the influence of inclined support surface on postural strategy during platform translations. Eight healthy adults maintained their balance in stance during support surface translations in the anterior-posterior direction at two different frequencies (0.2 and 0.8[Hz]) and at three different base of support condition (LV: Level, TD: Toe Down, TU: Toe Up). For the kinematic data at slow frequency, subjects rode the platform depending on the movement of platform itself, while at fast frequency subjects fixed their head and center of mass (COM) in space. For the kinetic data at slow frequency, the ankle moment amplitude is similar among all support surface conditions, while at fast frequency the ankle moment amplitude for TU is significantly larger than LV. Result shown that the effect of inclined surface on postural strategy changed according to frequency of support surface translations.

A recent surge of research on vehicular ad hoc networks (VANETs) has given us new opportunities and challenges. Aside from safety-related applications, commercial applications also find their way to fully utilize these networks. One of the promising applications is the dissemination of commercial advertisements over VANETs. However, there are uncooperative vehicles that may disrupt the spreading of these advertisements. To encourage cooperation, we want to address proper incentives and security measurements. In this paper, we use Reed-Solomon codes (RS-codes) to construct our incentive scheme and enhance its security by introducing one discrete logarithm representation problem. Our construction yields a secure and practical commercial advertisement dissemination scheme over VANETs. © 2011 IEEE.

This paper introduces the implementation of adjustable camber of flapping wing and tail of a typical artificial flapping vehicle using a flexible piezoelectric actuator, called macro-fiber composites (MFC). When MFC is applied to the main wing of an ornithopter, the induced camber greatly affects aerodynamic characteristics such as mean lift and thrust. The tail wing actuation can be useful to reduce the pitching oscillation of an ornithopter. © 2011 IEEE.

Compared with fossil fuel vehicles, plug-in hybrid electric vehicles (PHEVs) and electric vehicles (EVs) maintain obvious and profound significance for the less city pollutant and operation noise. Moreover, EVs can benefit operation of the power systems via friendly feeding back the energy stored in the EV batteries into the grids when needed. The related research about charging of batteries for EVs has been extensively developed, which is one of the main issues for the application of EVs. This paper focuses on the cooperation between the battery demand and the supply curve problems, when the charging of EV is operated in the swapping way. Firstly, the concept of the swapping battery requirement (SBR) adequacy is presented, and then the corresponding mathematical model is established and the algorithm based on the Monte Carlo method is proposed. In addition, some critical factors which have great influence on the SBR and reserved fully charged battery (RFCB) curves are demonstrated, such as EVs driving cycle, battery capacity, average energy-consuming level and charging time. Simulation results are presented to verify the proposed method.

Product dimensional quality has been one of the most important challenges for machining processes. However, current practice in multi-operational machining is a monitoring or inspection oriented measurement strategy which could not provide solutions for deviation reduction while deviation propagation and compensation are taken into account. While the deviation of some quality characteristic is not satisfactory and could not be controlled in the last operation, a partial least squares regression method is proposed to set up the relations between upstream operations and the last one. The regression result helps engineers to identify key processes with respect to their impacts on the last one, and to figure out possible solutions to reduce the deviation and thus makes the quality characteristic achieve the acceptable level. An industrial case is presented to illustrate our proposed methodology. © 2011 IEEE.

Buildings worldwide account for nearly 40% of global energy consumption. The biggest energy consumer in buildings is the Heating, Ventilation and Air Conditioning (HVAC) systems. HVAC also ranks top in terms of number of complaints by tenants. Maintaining HVAC systems in good conditions through early fault detection is thus a critical issue. The problem, however, is difficult since HVAC systems are large in scale, consisting of many coupling subsystems, building and equipment dependent, and operating under uncertain conditions. In this paper, a model-based and data-driven method is presented for robust system-level fault detection with potential for large-scale implementation. It is a synergistic integration of (1) Statistical Process control (SPC) for measuring and analyzing variations;(2) Kalman filtering based on gray-box models to provide predictions and determine SPC control limits;and (3) system analysis for analyzing fault propagation. The method has been tested against a simulation model of a 420-meter-high building. It detects both sudden faults and gradual degradation, and differentiates faults within a subsystem or propagated from elsewhere. Furthermore, the method is simple and generic, and should have good replicability and scalability. © 2011 IEEE.
