Current user interface builders provide only low-level assistance, because they have knowledge of neither the application, nor the principles by which interface elements are combined effectively. We have developed a framework that unites the knowledge components essential for effective user interface presentation design. The framework consists of an application model (both a data model and a control model), a design process model that supports top-down iterative development, and graphic design knowledge that is used both to place dialog box elements such that their application dependent logical relationships are visually reinforced and to control design symmetry and balance. To demonstrate the framework's viability, we have constructed a tool based on encapsulated design knowledge that establishes high-level style preferences and provides expert assistance for the dialog box presentation design and menu structuring.

This paper presents a method that takes advantage of powerful graphics hardware to obtain fully affine-invariant image feature detection and matching. The chosen approach is the accurate, but also very computationally expensive, ASIFT algorithm. We have created a CUDA version of this algorithm that is up to 70 times faster than the original implementation, while keeping the algorithm's accuracy close to that of ASIFT. It's matching performance is therefore much better than that of other non-fully affine-invariant algorithms. Also, this approach was adapted to fit the multi-GPU paradigm in order to assess the acceleration potential from modern GPU clusters.

One research direction to make computers become more active machines is to use audio input with far-field omni-directional microphones, these being required to face the acoustics problem of the meeting scenario. This topic is not only interesting from an artificial listener point-of-view, but also as one of the hottest topics in searchable media. In this paper two noise suppression methods for real meeting audio are evaluated. Because of the usage of hands-free microphones in a meeting environment, the reverberation of meeting rooms and background noise sources such as projector, computer fan have huge impact on speech quality. Two denoising methods, based on statistical Wavelet filtration and short-time Fourier transform are discussed and evaluated. Whilst the quantile technique is suitable for estimating stationary noise (beamer, computer fan), non-stationary sources (closing door, chair movement) can be handled by recursive structure and adaptive temporal gain of the statistical filtration method. Besides, frequency non-linear gain can remove colored noise effectively. The proposed noise reduction methods are evaluated with speaker localizing application applied on the meeting database of the Mistral project. The results show the pros and cons of each method applied on the meeting database.
