Full duplex transmission is a promising technique to enhance the capacity of relay communications. In this paper, we investigate the optimum transmit power allocation for full duplex decode-and-forward (DF) relaying systems. The outage probability is adopted as the optimization criterion and a transmit power optimization problem is formulated for systems with and without total power constraint. Analytical and numerical results are provided to show the advantages of the power optimization. More interestingly, the effect of residual self-interference introduced by full duplex transmission is examined in terms of optimal power allocation and outage probability performance improvement.

It is a big challenge to segment magnetic resonance (MR) images with intensity inhomogeneity. The widely used segmentation algorithms are region based, which mostly rely on the intensity homogeneity, and could bring inaccurate results. In this paper, we propose a novel region-based active contour model in a variational level set formulation. Based on the fact that intensities in a relatively small local region are separable, a local intensity clustering criterion function is defined. Then, the local function is integrated around the neighborhood center to formulate a global intensity criterion function, which defines the energy term to drive the evolution of the active contour locally. Simultaneously, an intensity fitting term that drives the motion of the active contour globally is added to the energy. In order to segment the image fast and accurately, we utilize a coefficient to make the segmentation adaptive. Finally, the energy is incorporated into a level set formulation with a level set regularization term, and the energy minimization is conducted by a level set evolution process. Experiments on synthetic and real MR images show the effectiveness of our method. (C) 2013 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Finding the center of rotation is an essential step for accurate 3-D reconstruction in optical projection tomography. Unfortunately, current methods are not convenient since they require either prior scanning of a reference phantom, small structures of high intensity existing in the specimen, or active participation during the centering procedure. To solve these problems this paper proposes a fast and automatic center of rotation search method making use of parallel programming in graphics processing units. Our method is based on a two step search approach making use only of those sections of the image with high signal-to-noise ratio. We have tested this method both in nonscattering ex vivo samples and in in vivo specimens with a considerable contribution of scattering such as Drosophila melanogaster pupae, recovering in all cases the center of rotation with a precision 1/4 pixel or less.

Social media is widely utilized in the tobacco control campaigns. It is a great challenge to evaluate the efficiency of tobacco control policies on social network sites and find gaps among tobacco-oriented social networks. In this paper, we construct three tobacco-oriented social networks according to user interaction on Facebook tobacco-related fan pages. We further investigate the interaction patterns including temporal distribution and interaction patterns to reveal the differences of tobacco-oriented social networks. Our empirical analysis demonstrates that: 1) the user interaction on the pro-tobacco fan pages is more active. Fan pages for tobacco promotion are more successful in obtaining more user attention. 2) The gap between tobacco promotion and tobacco control is widening. These empirical results can provide us significant insights into understanding the evolutionary patterns of social interaction in tobacco-oriented social networks and further help the government departments of tobacco control to make reasonable decisions. © 2013 Springer-Verlag.

The research on crown behavior and evacuation laws in the case of unexpected emergency incidents such as fires, explosions, accidents, driving, man-made mistreats in relatively closed, personnel-intensive, and high-risk subway stations, have a good theory and practical significance. Based on ACP approach, the architecture of universal artificial system of subway station is put forward for the first time. And its construction process and its application and significance are provided. It can study crowd behavior and evacuation laws in subway stations in the case of emergency situations. It may provide technical support for designing subway stations, evaluating evacuation plans and training security management and personnel. And, it has also good theoretical and practical values in designing evacuation system, developing and optimizing evacuation plans.

Action Recognition Using Context-Constrained Linear Coding

Although traditional bag-of-words model has shown promising results for action recognition, it takes no consideration of the relationship among spatio-temporal points;furthermore, it also suffers serious quantization error. In this letter, we propose a novel coding strategy called context-constrained linear coding (CLC) to overcome these limitations. We first calculate the contextual distance between local descriptors and each codeword by considering the spatio-temporal contextual information. Then, linear coding using contextual distance is adopted to alleviate the quantization error. Our method is verified on two challenging databases (KTH and UCF sports), and the experimental results demonstrate that our method achieves better results than previous methods in action recognition.

Discovering temporal patterns and changes in tobacco use has important practical implications in tobacco control. This paper presents one of the first comprehensive international studies of seasonal smoking patterns based on online searches performed. Using periodogram and crosscorrelation, we find that smoking-related search behavior shows strong seasonality effect across countries. In addition, there are significant pairwise associations between such seasonality in different countries.

A single click ensemble segmentation (SCES) approach based on an existing "Click & Grow" algorithm is presented. The SCES approach requires only one operator selected seed point as compared with multiple operator inputs, which are typically needed. This facilitates processing large numbers of cases. Evaluation on a set of 129 CT lung tumor images using a similarity index (SI) was done. The average SI is above 93% using 20 different start seeds, showing stability. The average SI for 2 different readers was 79.53%. We then compared the SCES algorithm with the two readers, the level set algorithm and the skeleton graph cut algorithm obtaining an average SI of 78.29%, 77.72%, 63.77% and 63.76%, respectively. We can conclude that the newly developed automatic lung lesion segmentation algorithm is stable, accurate and automated. (C) 2012 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
