Agent-based evacuation modeling approach is gained more and more attention for investigating human cognitive capabilities and social behaviors in building fires. This paper mainly overviews the research about various agent-based evacuation models. For the decision-making reflects the intelligence of agent individual, we define three types of behavior decision-making models for agent individual based on the collected literatures and sum up the characteristics of each type. Aiming at crowd' important influence on evacuation processes, we also sum up two types of agent-based crowd modeling approaches to simulate crowd evacuation processes and give corresponding cases. Finally, after summing up the existing problems, the outlooks of the research from computaional experiments point of view is proposed. © 2012 IEEE.

Simulation of plant structure competing for light source has mostly been done by directly modifying plant structure according to light interception. Functional-structural plant models, however, emphasize the influence of light interception on biomass production, and consequently plant structure. In this paper, we integrate a light distribution model with Greenlab model, which used Beer-Law in computing biomass production. By replacing Beer-Law with a light interception model for biomass production, the combined model was able to simulate the effect of light condition on plant structure through source-sink regulation. The positive and negative sides of this approach are discussed.

Nowadays, most industrial robots have been designed to be mechanically stiff with rigid link. When a robot with heavy payload is running in fast motions, the residual vibrations of the end-effector are primary caused by joint flexibility. Therefore, the flexibility of joint cannot be neglected. This paper presents a systematic approach to dynamic modeling and residual vibration mode analysis for an industrial robot with rigid links and flexible joints (RLFJ). First, the flexibility of the joint is modeled as a torsional spring and the dynamic equations for this robot are derived by using Lagrange's method. Then, to examine residual vibration properties of the system, numerical simulation is carried out. The following important conclusions are drawn from simulation results: (1) the proposed dynamic model can represent joint flexibility of industrial robot and the joint flexibility causes the residual vibration of the end-effector;(2) for a given RLFJ model, the residual vibration is mainly affected by the payload mass, path of the task and joint stiffness.

Important users are high-status vertices in social networks. They are everywhere in most fields of society and have big impact on those around them. Although a lot of effort has been made on identifying important users, the efficient methods still need to be developed, especially for the web users from Sina microblog, which is the most popular social networking sites in China and has unique characteristics. In this paper, a machine learning-based method which only uses several attributes on Naive Bayes Classifiers (NBC) and Back Propagation Neural Network (BPNN) was proposed to identify important users. Initial experiments indicate that our method is effective. The result of "high" category has more than 55% accuracy rate. We find the NBC can identify more important users while BPNN has higher accuracy rate. What's more, the numbers of follower and followings in Sina microblog is independent.

Research data sharing becomes increasingly difficult in the context of social media. Increasing restrictions from social media sites are creating an environment where data cannot be freely shared and as a result scientific claims cannot be verified. In this work, we present a novel approach to data sharing that does not require explicitly publishing a dataset. We create a framework where researchers systematically share the parameters they used to crawl the dataset along with the code used to collect the data, allowing the reader to re-assemble the dataset at a later time. While this approach is by no means a silver bullet, we seek to start a conversation for researchers to implement approaches to data sharing that can be embraced by the research community.

Many applications can benefit from constructing models to predict the behavior of an entity. However, such models do not provide the user with explicit knowledge that can be directly used to influence (restrain or encourage) behavior for the user's interest. Undoubtedly, the user often exactly needs such knowledge. This type of knowledge is called actionable knowledge. Actionability is a very important criterion measuring the interestingness of mined patterns. In this paper, to mine such knowledge, we take a first step toward formally defining a new class of data mining problem, named actionable behavioral rule mining. Our definition explicitly states the problem as a search problem in a framework of support and expected utility. We also propose two algorithms for mining such rules. Our experiment shows the validity of our approach, as well as the practical value of our defined problem. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

It is difficult to select a composite service with the lowest actual executing cost using the existing methods for QoS-aware service composition in cloud computing. By analyzing the dynamic execution process of composite service with state transition matrix, this paper proposes a new QoS aware optimal service composition method. In view of the effect of composite services reliability on the composite service performance, the method regards the cost averaged for one time of successful execution of a composite as its actual executing cost, and then selects the composite services with the aim of minimizing the composite service execution cost. The simulation result shows that the proposed method is superior to other methods in execution cost.

A trajectory planning method in joint space which provides a continuity of position, velocity and acceleration just with simple numerical simulations was already presented by us before. This paper, therefore, presents techniques in detail for implementation of it. To guarantee high performance, a novel DSP-based multiaxis motion controller is developed for executing the trajectory planning method on-line. Hardware design and software design of the motion controller is described. Finally, the proposed trajectory planning method is tested based on the proposed motion controller for an arc welding robot. Experimental results and performances evaluation are also presented in this paper.

Adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) is an effective method for learning while fuzzy controller has been put into use in many applications because of its simplicity and no need of accurate mathematic modeling. The combination of ADP and fuzzy control has been studied a lot. Before this paper, we have studied using ADP to learn the fuzzy rules of a Monotonic controller, which shows good performance. In this paper, a hyperbolic fuzzy model is adopted to make an improvement. In this way, both membership function and fuzzy rules are learned. With ADP algorithm, fuzzy controller has the capacity of learning and adapting. Simulations on a single cart-pole plant and a rotational inverted pendulum are implemented to observe the performance, even with uncertainties and disturbances.

The Proportional - Integral - Derivative (PID) controllers are one of the most popular controllers used in industry because of their remarkable effectiveness, simplicity of implementation and broad applicability. PID tuning is the key issue in the design of PID controllers and most of the tuning processes are implemented manually resulting in difficulty and time consuming. To enhance the capabilities of traditional PID parameters tuning techniques, modern heuristics approaches, such as Genetic Algorithm (GA) and Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO), are employed recent years. In this paper, a novel tuning method based on Fruit Fly Optimization Algorithm (FOA) is proposed to optimize PID controller parameters. Each fruit fly's position represents a candidate solution for PID parameters. When the fruit fly swarm flies towards one location, it is treated as the evolution of each iterative swarm. After hundreds of iteration, the tuning results - the best PID controller parameters can be obtained. The main advantages of the proposed method include ease of implementation, stable convergence characteristic, large searching range, ease of transformation of such concept into program code and ease of understanding. Simulation results demonstrate that the FOA-Based optimized PID (FOA - PID) controller is with the capability of providing satisfactory closed - loop performance. © 2012 IEEE.
