Budget-related decisions in search auctions are recognized as a structured decision problem, rather than a simple constraint. Budget planning over several coupled campaigns remains a challenging but utterly important task in search advertisements. In this paper, we propose a multi-campaign budget plan- ning approach using optimal control techniques, with consideration of the substitute relationship between advertising campaigns. A measure of coupled relationships between campaigns is presented, e.g., the over- lapping degree (O) in terms of campaign contents, promotional periods and target regions. We also discuss some desirable properties of our model and possible solutions. Furthermore, computational experiments are conducted to evaluate our model and identified properties, with real-world data collected from logs and reports of practical campaigns. Experimental results show that, (a) coupled campaigns with higher over- lapping degrees can reduce the optimal budget level and the optimal revenue, and also arrive the budgeting cap earlier;(b) The advertising effort could be seriously weakened when ignoring the overlapping degree between campaigns.

To enhance classification performance by making use of easily available unlabelled data to overcome the scarcity of labelled data, this paper proposes an Embedded Co-Adaboost algorithm that integrates multi-view learning into the Adaboost learning framework and at the same time leverages the advantages of Co-training algorithm for performance enhancement. Experimental results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed algorithm in terms of the convergence rate, the accuracy, and the steady performance as compared to the original AdaBoost algorithm, without relying on redundant and sufficient feature sets. As a algorithm application in software engineering, the Embedded Co-AdaBoost has been applied to the classification of software document relations to improve the quality of the architecture design documents and the reusability of design knowledge. © 2012 IEEE.

On a Bio-inspired Amphibious Robot Capable of Multimodal Motion

This paper addresses the system design and locomotion control for a versatile amphibious robot, AmphiRobot-II, inspired by various amphibian principles in the animal kingdom. In terms of the propulsion features of existing amphibians, a novel hybrid propulsive mechanism coupled with wheel-propeller-fin movements is proposed that integrates fish- or dolphin-like swimming and wheel-based crawling. The robot is able not only to implement flexible wheel-based movements on land, but also to perform steady and efficient fish-or dolphin-like swimming under water and can further switch between these two patterns via a specialized swivel device. To achieve multimodal motions, a body deformation steering approach is proposed for the turning locomotion on land with minimum turning radius obtained accordingly. A central pattern generator inspired underwater locomotion control is also implemented and tested on the physical robot. Based on the aforementioned design, the AmphiRobot-II prototype has been built and has successfully demonstrated to confirm the effectiveness of the hybrid propulsive scheme and the amphibious control approaches.

Integrated Design of Machine Body and control Algorithm for Improving the Robustness of a Closed-Chain Five-Bar Machine

An integrated design approach, namely, design for control (DFC), is further studied in this paper. Previous work on the DFC approach usually takes the proportional-derivative (PD) control algorithm. It is revealed in a closed-chain five-bar machine case that the PD-based DFC approach can only obtain a desired performance in set-point control task rather than tracking control task. In order to improve the robustness of this mechatronic system in terms of change of tasks, this paper suggests to use a "PD plus robust term" control algorithm in the DFC approach. Theoretical analysis shows that a satisfactory performance can be achieved by the proposed DFC. And it is also shown that the gain in the robust term plays an important role in bridging design of control algorithm and design of machine body. The general design principle of machine body is to design parameters of machine body to minimize the lower bound of this robust gain. Finally, the effectiveness of the proposed approach is validated by simulations.

A Multiobjective Optimization Based Fuzzy control for Nonlinear Spatially Distributed Processes With Application to a Catalytic Rod

This paper considers the problem of multiobjective fuzzy control design for a class of nonlinear spatially distributed processes (SDPs) described by parabolic partial differential equations (PDEs), which arise naturally in the modeling of diffusion-convection-reaction processes in finite spatial domains. Initially, the modal decomposition technique is applied to the SDP to formulate it as an infinite-dimensional singular perturbation model of ordinary differential equations (ODEs). An approximate nonlinear ODE system that captures the slow dynamics of the SDP is thus derived by singular perturbations. Subsequently, the Takagi-Sugeno fuzzy model is employed to represent the finite-dimensional slow system, which is used as the basis for the control design. A linear matrix inequality (LMI) approach is then developed for the design of multiobjective fuzzy controllers such that the closed-loop SDP is exponentially stable, and L-2 an performance bound is provided under a prescribed H-infinity constraint of disturbance attenuation for the slow system. Furthermore, using the existing LMI optimization technique, a suboptimal fuzzy controller can be obtained in the sense of minimizing the L-2 performance bound. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the control of the temperature profile of a catalytic rod.

Evacuation is an effective strategy to mitigate damage of man-made or natural disasters. Evacuation clearance time is one of the key indicators in evacuation planning and management. Evacuees' destination choice and route choice behavior are two crucial factors used to estimate evacuation clearance time. However, these two factors are viewed as constants in previous research, and the quantification of the impact of these two factors is lacking. In this paper, the authors report impact of variation of evacuees' destination choice and route choice behavior on evacuation clearance time. The impact analysis is done based on a case study by using an artificial transportation system platform called TransWorld. And the best values of evacuees' destination choice and route choice behavior are given, respectively. The computational experimental results illustrate that if evacuation managers adopt reasonable strategies to guide evacuees' destination choice and route choice, it can significantly reduce evacuation clearance time. The simulation methodology, computational results and discussion can be used for future emergency evacuation planning. This study also provides potentials of new emergency evacuation management and control strategies from the perspective of evacuee behavior.

In this letter, we propose a semi-supervised dimensionality reduction method named Discriminative Sparsity Preserving Projection (DSPP). In order to get the feature mapping which projects the high-dimensional data into a low-dimensional intrinsic space, DSPP attempts to maintain the prior low-dimensional representation constructed by the data points and the known class labels and, meanwhile, considers the complexity of in the ambient space and the smoothness of in preserving the sparse representation of data. On one hand, the DSPP method obtains an explicit nonlinear feature mapping for the out-of-sample extrapolation. On the other hand, the DSPP method has a high discriminative ability which is inherited from the sparse representation of data. Experiment results show the effectiveness of the proposed method.

A virtual plant that responds to the environment like a real one: the case for chrysanthemum

Plants respond to environmental change through alterations in organ size, number and biomass. However, different phenotypes are rarely integrated in a single model, and the prediction of plant responses to environmental conditions is challenging. The aim of this study was to simulate and predict plant phenotypic plasticity in development and growth using an organ-level functionalstructural plant model, Greenlab. Chrysanthemum plants were grown in climate chambers in 16 different environmental regimes: four different temperatures (15, 18, 21 and 24 degrees C) combined with four different light intensities (40%, 51%, 65% and 100%, where 100% is 340 mu mol m-2 s-1). Measurements included plant height, flower number and major organ dry mass (main and side-shoot stems, main and side-shoot leaves and flowers). To describe the basipetal flowering sequence, a position-dependent growth delay function was introduced into the model. The model was calibrated on eight treatments. It was capable of simulating multiple plant phenotypes (flower number, organ biomass, plant height) with visual output. Furthermore, it predicted well the phenotypes of the other eight treatments (validation) through parameter interpolation. This model could potentially serve to bridge models of different scales, and to link energy input to crop output in glasshouses.
