In terms of the difficulty of vehicle tracking in complex environment of the visual surveillance system, an object tracking algorithm is proposed for the applications in practical visual surveillance systems for intelligent traffic. A block-based Gaussian mixture background modeling method for object detection is presented to reduce the computational complexity of moving vehicle object abstraction. An adaptive tracking algorithm fused with color features and texture features is described to better adapt the traffic scene variation. The experimental results show that the proposed algorithm can effectively deal with the complex urban traffic conditions and the tracking performance is better than the conventional particle filter method and single feature based non-adaptive object tracking method.

Global degree/strength-based preferential attachment is widely used as an evolution mechanism of networks. But it is hard to believe that any individual can get global information and shape the network architecture based on it. In this paper, it is found that the global preferential attachment emerges from the local interaction models, including the distance-dependent preferential attachment (DDPA) evolving model of weighted networks (Li et al 2006 New J. Phys. 8 72), the acquaintance network model (Davidsen et al 2002 Phys. Rev. Lett. 88 128701) and the connecting nearest-neighbor (CNN) model (Vazquez 2003 Phys. Rev. E 67 056104). For the DDPA model and the CNN model, the attachment rate depends linearly on the degree or vertex strength, whereas for the acquaintance network model, the dependence follows a sublinear power law. It implies that for the evolution of social networks, local contact could be more fundamental than the presumed global preferential attachment.

Stabilizability via direct/observer-based state feedback control for discrete-time switched linear controlsystems (SLCSs) is investigated in this paper. For an SLCS, the control factors are not only the control input but also the switching signal, and they need to be designed in order to stabilize the system. As a result, stabilization design for SLCSs is more complicated than that for non-switched ones. Differently from the existing approaches, a periodic switching signal and piecewise constant linear state feedback control are adopted to achieve periodic stabilizability for such systems. It is highlighted that multiple feedback controllers need to be designed for one subsystem. For discrete-time SLCSs, it is proved that reachability implies periodic stabilizability via state feedback. A necessary and sufficient criterion for periodic stabilizability is also established. Two stabilization design algorithms are presented for real application. Moreover, it is proved that reachability and observability imply periodic stabilizability via observer-based feedback for discrete-time SLCSs. Periodic detectability, as the dual concept of periodic stabilizability, is discussed and the stabilization design algorithms via observer-based feedback are presented as well. (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. To improve the agility, dynamics, composability, reusability, and development efficiency restricted by monolithic federation object model (FOM), a modular FOM is proposed by high level architecture (HLA) evolved product development group. This paper reviews the state-of-the-art of HLA evolved modular FOM. In particular, related concepts, the overall impact on HLA standards, extension principles, and merging processes are discussed. Also permitted and restricted combinations, and merging rules are provided, and the influence on HLA interface specification is given. The comparison between modular FOM and base object model (BOM) is performed to illustrate the importance of their combination. The applications of modular FOM are summarized. Finally, the significance to facilitate compoable simulation both in academia and practice is presented and future directions are pointed out.
