Thermodynamic-based ecological scaling theory in urban metabolic framework:a review

Prior research has consistently demonstrated that urban economic and social systems adhere to the empirical scaling ***,a plethora of evidence,including the scale-free networks of energy metabolism,the allometric growth patterns of species and populations,and the scaling law relationship between exergy and transformity in biosphere systems across various levels,indicates that urban ecosystems exhibit multi-level scaling law characteristics in energy metabolism under self-organization,alongside significant human activity *** study synthesizes these findings to hypothesize that urban ecological components are also aligned with system-level scaling theory within the urban metabolism *** encompasses:1)the existence of multistable coexistence and mutual transformation phenomena,mirroring the dynamic nature of scaling laws;and 2)a nuanced balance between the ecosystem and the socio-economic system,particularly in the realms of spatial competition and output *** ecosystem scaling theory hypotheses of urban metabolic processes offer a theoretical foundation for identifying ecological security tipping points,which are pivotal in the strategic decision-making for ecological planning and management in the future.

In this study,an efficient stabilizer material for cadmium(Cd^(2+))treatment was successfully prepared by simply co-milling olivine with *** analyticalmethods including XRD,TEM,SEM and FTIR,combined with theoretical calculations(DFT),were used to investigate mechanochemical interfacial reaction between twominerals,and the reaction mechanism of Cd removal,with ion exchange between Cd^(2+)and Mg^(2+)as the main pathway.A fixation capacity of Cd^(2+)as high as 270.61 mg/g,much higher than that of the pristine minerals and even the individual/physical mixture of milled olivine and magnesite,has been obtained at optimized conditions,with a neutral pH value of the solution after treatment to allow its direct *** as-proposed Mg-based stabilizer with various advantages such as cost benefits,green feature etc.,will boosts the utilization efficiency of naturalminerals over the elaborately prepared adsorbents.

Superhydrophobic ceramic membrane coupled with a biphasic solvent for efficient CO_(2)capture

An innovative strategy was proposed by integration of membrane contactor(MC)with biphasic solvent for efficient CO_(2) capture from flue *** accessible fly ash-based ceramic membrane(CM)underwent hydrophobic modification through silane grafting,followed by fluoroalkylsilane decoration,to prepare the superhydrophobic membrane(CSCM).The CSCM significantly improved resistance to wetting by the biphasic solvent,consisting of amine(DETA)and sulfolane(TMS).Morphological characterizations and chemical analysis revealed the notable enhancements in pore structure and hydrophobic chemical groups for the modified *** of wetting/bubbling behavior based on static wetting theory referred the liquid entry pressure(LEP)of CSCM increased by 20 kPa compared to pristine *** with traditional amine solvents,the biphasic solvent presented the expected phase *** experiments demonstrated that the CO_(2) capture efficiency of the biphasic solvent increased by 7%,and the electrical energy required for desorption decreased by 32%.The 60-h continuous testing and supplemental characterization of used membrane confirmed the excellent adaptability and durability of the *** study provides a potential approach for accessing hydrophobic ceramic membranes and biphasic solvents for industrial CO_(2) capture.

Achieving an Accurate Random Process Model for PV Power Using Cheap Data:Leveraging the SDE and Public Weather Reports

Stochastic differential equation (SDE)-based random process models of renewable energy sources (RESs) jointly capture evolving probability distribution and temporal correlation in continuous time. It enabled recent studies to remarkably improve performance of power system dynamic uncertainty quantification and optimization. However, considering the non-homogeneous random process nature of PV, there still remains a challenging question: how can a realistic and accurate daily SDE model for PV power be obtained that reflects its weather-dependent and non-Gaussian uncertainty in operation, especially when high-resolution numerical weather prediction (NWP) or sky imager is unavailable for many distributed plants? To fill this gap, this article finds that an accurate SDE model for PV power can be constructed only using the data from low-resolution public weather reports. Specifically, for each day, an hourly parameterized Jacobi diffusion process recreates temporal patterns of PV volatility. Its parameters are mapped from the day's public weather reports to reflect varying weather conditions using a simple learning model. The SDE model jointly captures intraday and intrahour volatility. Statistical examination shows that the proposed approach outperforms a selection of the latest deep learning-based time series models on real-world data collected in Macao.

The successful control of hydrocarbon and CO emissions from low-temperature diesel exhausts requires the use of highly active co-oxidation *** this study,Sn was used to enhance the catalytic performance of Pd/CeO_(2)in CO and C_(3)H_(6)co-oxidation ***_(2)with added stannum(Sn)was prepared as a support using the co-precipitation method,and Pd was loaded onto the support using the impregnation *** Sn addition(the optimal Ce/Sn ratio is 0.75:0.25),the T_(50)values of CO and C_(3)H_(6)are reduced by 20 and 32℃,respectively.A series of characterization methods indicates that the addition of Sn to the support greatly enhances its lattice oxygen mobility and increases the proportion of *** the co-oxidation process,stronger lattice oxygen mobility allows CO to react faster through the Mars-van Krevelen mechanism,weakening the competition with C_(3)H_(6)for O_(2).A higher PdO content enhances the C_(3)H_(6)oxidation ***,CO can more readily reduce PdO than Pd^(2+)in solid solution with the support,which consequently further enhances co-oxidation ***,the addition of Sn is a simple and effective strategy for enhancing the performance of Pd/CeO_(2)catalysts in CO and C_(3)H_(6)co-oxidation ***,the promotional effect of CO achieved in this study contributes to a deeper understanding of the interactions that occur during the co-oxidation of C_(3)H_(6)and CO.

Micro-structure evolution, precipitation behavior and strengthening mechanism of Ni-Cr-Mo system steel fabricated via laser powder bed fusion and subsequent quenching control

High-performance 24CrNiMo steel was fabricated using Laser Powder Bed Fusion (LPBF). Subsequent quenching treatment was applied and the influence of quenching temperatures on micro-structure evolution and properties was systematically characterised and analysed. The micro-structure of the as-built steel consisted of two parts. The first part comprised martensite with twins combined with ω-Fe nano-particles, and the second part consisted of lower bainite in the molten pool, as well as upper bainite, granular bainite and tempered martensite in the heat-affected zone. With the quenching temperatures varying from 800℃ to 950℃, the micro-structure gradually transformed from acicular ferrite + martensite to tempered martensite +θ-Fe3C carbides, and the grain size exhibited noticeable growth. Moreover, quenching treatments could eliminate the anisotropy and inhomogeneity of the micro-structure. The rod-shaped nanosized η-Fe2C and θ-Fe3C precipitates were clearly observed, which were converted from ω-Fe and distributed at multiple angles in the lath. The size and number of nano-precipitates, triggered by the high self-tempering degree of martensite, gradually increased. The relationships among grain size, the twins, dislocation density and nano-precipitation and the dramatically improved performance of quenched samples were analysed using strengthening mechanisms. After quenching at 850℃, the as-built 24CrNiMo steel attained ultra-high mechanical properties including hardness, Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS), Elongation (El) and impact energy with values of 480.9 HV_(1), 1611.4 MPa, 9.8% and 42.8 J, respectively. Meanwhile, both the wear and thermal fatigue resistance increased by approximately 40%. This study demonstrated that LPBF-fabricated 24CrNiMo steel, with matching good performances, can be achieved using a subsequent one-step quenching process.

Rapid reduction of air pollution and short-term exposure risks in China

With the continuous control of anthropogenic emissions,China’s air quality has improved significantly in recent *** this background,research on how the short-term exposure risks caused by air pollution in China have changed is *** study utilized hourly concentration data from ground observation stations and the official air quality guidelines of the Ministry of Ecology and Environment of China and the World Health Organization as standards to systematically investigate the spatiotemporal characteristics and short-term exposure risks of air pollution in China from 2015 to *** results indicate that various atmospheric pollutants except for ozone showed a decreasing trend ***,both single pollutant air pollution days(SAPDs)and multiple pollutant air pollution days(MAPDs)showed varying degrees of reduction within 15 and 25 days,*** was dominated mainly by excessive PM_(2.5)and PM_(10)pollutants,while MAPD was dominated mainly by excessive pollutant combinations,including PM_(2.5)+PM_(10),CO+PM_(2.5)+PM_(10),and SO_(2)+PM_(2.5)+PM_(10).As the concentration of atmospheric pollutants decreased,the total excess risk(ER)decreased yearly from 2015 to 2022,but there were significant regional ***,the ER is less than 0.25%in southern China,in the range of 0.25%-0.5%in the North China Plain and some cities in the northeast,and higher than 1%in the *** matter is currently the primary pollutant posing short-term exposure risk in China,especially due to the impact of sandstorm *** study indicates that China’s atmospheric cleaning action is significantly beneficial for reducing health risks.

A multi-strategy enhanced moth-flame optimization algorithm for complex inverse kinematics problems in series robots

In this study of optimizing the dynamic characteristics of the manipulator, with the increase of motion redundancy, the complexity of solving the inverse motion problem increases significantly, making it extremely challenging to develop a general analytical solution algorithm. To address this challenge, this paper introduces a multi-strategy enhanced moth-flame optimization algorithm, DMFO. Firstly, the uneven initialization of MFO limits its comprehensive initial search capability and leads to slow convergence speed. Consequently, it lacks competitiveness in specific engineering problems. The mutation chaos strategy, quantum evolution strategy and precise elimination strategy are used to improve the formation of DMFO. Secondly, DMFO and eight meta-heuristic algorithms (GA, PSO, ABC, MFO, DE, WO, BKA, COA) are tested on CEC2017, demonstrating its superior local and global exploitation and exploration capabilities. Then these kinematics models of 4,6,7-DOF manipulators is established based on DH method, and the objective function is derived from the forward motion equation. The effectiveness of DMFO in solving the inverse kinematics of robot arms is validated through its application. Finally, the engineering verification is carried out on the manipulator UR16e, which highlights the success of DMFO in addressing the inverse motion problem of multi-DOF serial robots. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.
