EK-Net++: Real-time scene text detection with expand kernel distance and Epoch Adaptive Weight

Recently, scene text detection has received significant attention due to its wide applications. Accurate detection in complex scenes of multiple scales, orientations, and curvature remains a challenge. Component-based methods have emerged as the dominant approach for offering a more flexible way to achieve superior performance. However, Component-based methods employ the Vatti clipping algorithm for multi-instance training to handle the difficulty of arbitrary-shaped text. Yet we identify several bias results from these approaches called the "shrinked kernel" leading to decreased accuracy. Additionally, almost all text detection methods fail to consider the characteristics of different datasets and directly assign fixed loss weights to multi-instances. To address these limitations, we propose a new approach named Expand Kernel Network (EK-Net++), which presents the expand kernel distance map to compensate for the previous deficiency and incorporates three-stage regression to complete integral instance detection. Furthermore, we design the Epoch Adaptive Weight algorithm which dynamically distinguishes the characteristics of different datasets. EK-Net++ not only achieves precise positioning of arbitrary-shaped text but also strikes a balance between performance and speed. Evaluation results show that EK-Net++ attains state-of-the-art or competitive performance compared to other advanced methods, e.g., F-measure of 86.72% at 35.42 FPS on ICDAR 2015, F-measure of 85.83% at 40.13 FPS on CTW1500. © 2024 Elsevier Ltd

Building intelligence identification system via large language model watermarking: a survey and beyond

Large Language Models (LLMs) are increasingly integrated into diverse industries, posing substantial security risks due to unauthorized replication and misuse. To mitigate these concerns, robust identification mechanisms are widely acknowledged as an effective strategy. Identification systems for LLMs now rely heavily on watermarking technology to manage and protect intellectual property and ensure data security. However, previous studies have primarily concentrated on the basic principles of algorithms and lacked a comprehensive analysis of watermarking theory and practice from the perspective of intelligent identification. To bridge this gap, firstly, we explore how a robust identity recognition system can be effectively implemented and managed within LLMs by various participants using watermarking technology. Secondly, we propose a mathematical framework based on mutual information theory, which systematizes the identification process to achieve more precise and customized watermarking. Additionally, we present a comprehensive evaluation of performance metrics for LLM watermarking, reflecting participant preferences and advancing discussions on its identification applications. Lastly, we outline the existing challenges in current watermarking technologies and theoretical frameworks, and provide directional guidance to address these challenges. Our systematic classification and detailed exposition aim to enhance the comparison and evaluation of various methods, fostering further research and development toward a transparent, secure, and equitable LLM ecosystem. © The Author(s) 2025.

This paper introduces federated services as a smart service ecology with federated security to align distributed data supply with diversified service demands spanning digital and societal contexts. It presents the comprehensive researches on the theoretical foundation and technical system of federated services, aiming at advancing our understanding and implementation of this novel service paradigm. First, a thorough examination of the characteristics of federated security within federated services is conducted. Then, a five-layer technical framework is formulated under a decentralized intelligent architecture, ensuring secure, agile, and adaptable service provision. On this basis, the operational mechanisms underlying data federation and service confederation is analyzed, with emphasis on the smart supply-demand matching model. Furthermore, a scenario-oriented taxonomy of federated services accompanied by illustrative examples is proposed. Our work offers actionable insights and roadmap for realizing and advancing federated services, contributing to the refinement and wider adoption of this transformative service paradigm in the digital era. © 2014 Chinese Association of Automation.

Design and Performance Analysis of a Series-Parallel Self-Aligning Index Finger Exoskeleton

Hand exoskeletons have become increasingly crucial for the rehabilitation of hand function, as relevant studies have shown that using the exoskeletons to assist in rehabilitation training can improve hand motor function. However, developing a human-robot kinematic compatibility exoskeleton while providing sufficient assistance torque is still a challenge. This paper develops a series-parallel self-aligning index finger exoskeleton to assist the index finger in flexion/extension and adduction/abduction training. A series-parallel mechanism driven by two motors simultaneously was proposed for the metacarpophalangeal (MCP) joint, which can ensure human-robot joint axes self-alignment and increase the joint assistance torque. A kinematic compatibility analysis method was proposed, and the kinematic compatibility of the series-parallel mechanism was analyzed. The degrees of freedom and forward kinematics of the proposed mechanism were analyzed, and its workspace was calculated, which results show that the motion range of the MCP joint can meet the grasping training requirements. Preliminary experiments were carried out, and the results indicate that the motion trajectory coefficients of the marker points at the MCP, PIP, and DIP joints averaged for all subjects with and without the proposed exoskeleton are 0.993, 0.956, and 0.939, respectively, which can verify the kinematic transparency of the proposed mechanism. The assistance torque generated by the proposed mechanism on the MCP joint can meet the joint assistance torque requirements. In a word, the proposed exoskeleton can achieve flexion/extension and adduction/abduction training, human-robot joint axes self-alignment, and provide sufficient assistance torque. © 2016 IEEE.

Data-Driven Learning and control with Event-Triggered Measurements

Event-triggered control has attracted considerable attention for its effectiveness in resource-restricted applications. To make event-triggered control as an end-to-end solution, a key issue is how to effectively learn unknown system dynamics from event-triggered measurements and consequently, develop a learning-based event-triggered controller. Existing works learn system dynamics based on periodic time-triggered measurements, and it is yet to know how to learn a controller with performance guarantee based on event-triggered measurements. To address this issue, we consider the problem of learning an event-triggered state feedback controller for an unknown linear system based on event-triggered state measurements in this work. In particular, we first analyze the event-triggered measurements within a set-membership framework. We prove that the estimation error belongs to a bounded ellipsoid determined by the historical measurements and the event-triggering condition. Subsequently, we demonstrate that all admissible systems compatible with the collected data samples can be explicitly represented in the form of quadratic matrix inequalities using the state estimates. With the acquired set of admissible systems, a co-design problem for the data-driven controller and event-triggering condition is solved using the linear matrix inequality technique, with guaranteed closed-loop stability and L2-gain performance. Finally, numerical examples and comparisons are provided to illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed event-triggered learning and control approach. © 1963-2012 IEEE.

Negative-pressure soft pneumatic actuators enabled by asymmetrically distributed bending units

Soft pneumatic actuators are highly flexible and can adapt to complex environments, attracting significant attention for their ability to operate in settings where rigid actuators cannot. Most existing soft pneumatic actuators are powered by positive pressure, which has the disadvantage of volume increase during operation and risk of exploding under large pressures. In this study, we designed a new type of soft actuator by inducing asymmetric bending deformation throughout a holey structure under negative pressure. Using finite element analysis and a theoretical model, we studied the effects of various geometric parameters on the structure's bending behavior. We found that the displacement of the circle's center from the central axis is a parameter with the most significant impact on the bending behavior of the structure. By designing circular holes with offset from the central axis, the structure can bend toward the offset direction during subsequent bending deformation. Based on this deformation mechanism, we designed a soft gripper that bends upon actuation and effectively picks up objects. We further designed a bi-directional gripper that bends towards both sides and a circular gripper that contracts towards the center upon evacuation to hold objects. These soft grippers’ grasping capabilities are validated by experimental tests. Finally, by arranging the holes in a wavy pattern within the structure, we created a crawling robot that moves forward through cyclic negative pressure actuation. These findings highlight the potential of leveraging bending behaviors in asymmetrically distributed holey structures for the development of negative-pressure driven soft actuators and robots. © 2025 Elsevier Ltd

The complex Adaptive systems for Transportation laboratory (CASTLab) was established by Prof. Fei-Yue Wang in July 1999 for the task of designing and implementing the proposed intelligent traffic system for the city of Xinxiang, Henan, one of the first initiatives in intelligent transportation systems (ITS) in China. At the end of 1999, the CASTLab became a part of the newly created Center for Intelligent control and systems in the Institute of Automation, Chinese Academy of Sciences (CASIA), one of the premier and oldest national research organizations in information, automation, and artificial intelligence in China and worldwide.

The leaching of dissolved organic nitrogen (DON) signals N loss in forest ecosystems, connecting terrestrial and aquatic ecosystems. The response of DON to varied inorganic N (Nin) deposition remains unclear. A 16-year continuous monitoring of DON in throughfall, soil water, and stream water was conducted under a field N manipulation (10-year Nin addition and subsequent cessation of Nin addition) in a subtropical forest in China. Under reference conditions, the average organic N (Nor) deposition was 23.0 ± 4.9 kg N ha−1 yr−1, with approximately one-third leaching at a soil depth of 30 cm, a value that was higher than those reported for temperate forests. Over a 16-year period, DON concentrations tended to increase in throughfall, soil solutions and stream water. The long-term increase in DON concentrations in soil solutions was primarily driven by increasing Nor deposition and indirectly influenced by decreasing acid deposition. Due to a doubling of monthly Nin input, either as sodium nitrate or as ammonium nitrate, the soil DON leaching doubled, causing the soil to transition from a DON sink to a DON source. After Nin addition ceased, the DON leaching returned to natural levels, and the soil reverted to being a DON sink. This study reveals the importance of Nor deposition and decreasing acid deposition as drivers of long-term trends in DON concentrations in soil solutions, in addition to elucidating the response patterns of DON to increasing and decreasing Nin deposition. © 2025 Elsevier B.V.

Evaluation of indocyanine green inhalation to detect air leak sites during video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery: a prospective study

Background: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and clinical benefits of indocyanine green (ICG) inhalation for detecting air leak sites during video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). Methods: Between February 2023 and May 2023, a total of 288 patients underwent VATS were enrolled in this study. Among the population, 72 patients received ICG inhalation test following the traditional submersion sealing test. And 216 patients only underwent the submersion sealing test were matched using 1:3 propensity score matching analysis. The results of ICG inhalation test and the clinical outcomes were compared. Results: In the ICG group, 48 air leak sites were detected in 25 patients (25/72, 34.7%). The conventional submersion sealing test identified 30 air leak sites, while the ICG inhalation test detected 47 sites. Among these detected air leak sites, 34 sites were repaired by suturing or stapling. The postoperative air leak rate in the ICG group (20.8%) was significantly lower than the control group (37.0%, P = 0.011). ICG inhalation test was a favorable factor for reducing postoperative air leaks (OR: 0.40;95%CI: 0.20–0.78;P = 0.008). Conclusions: The ICG inhalation test facilitates the identification of air leak sites that may have been overlooked in the conventional submersion sealing test. This technique is useful to reduce postoperative air leaks for patients undergoing VATS.
