Aiming at green infrastructures which are widely established in countries and regions within the Belt and Road Initiative, both in-situ monitoring and indoor experiments were conducted in the present study. Relationships of hydraulic properties (e.g., soil water characteristic curve and permeability) with root characteristics (e.g., distribution, morphology as well as biomass) and meteorological conditions were investigated. It is found that coarse roots are mainly observed in shallow soils, while fine roots are widely distributed in deep layers. Preferential flow induced by coarse roots and pore clogging due to fine roots are proved in dye-tracer test. The field monitoring is divided into three stages, i.e., T1 (sunny days), T2 (rainy days) and T3 (sunny days after T2). There exist distinct diurnal characteristics of changes of soil suction and water content during the T1 and T3 stages. Moreover, soil suction is negatively relevant with air relative humidity, under absence of rainfalls. Vegetation increases amplitudes of diurnal changes of soil suction and water content. During the T2 stage, diurnal variations of VWC of both vegetated and bare soils are negligible due to rainfalls. Soil air-entry value (AEV) is positively relevant with root biomass. In addition, vegetation improves soil water-holding capability at most vegetation-available suction ranges. As compared to indoor-measured SWCC, field-measured SWCC is more similar to that of ideal coarse-grained soils. Roots improve soil permeability through preferential flows and enhanced water-retention capacity. Results obtained in the present study helps to obtain desired outcomes, i.e., improving feasibility, performance and durability of green infrastructures. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In this work, a high-sensitivity distributed lateral pressure sensor based on Brillouin optical time-domain reflectometry (BOTDR) technique is proposed to enhance the pressure sensitivity using a double-coated single-mode fiber (SMF). Firstly, a pressure-induced strain model is developed to analyze the enhancement mechanism of pressure sensitivity by Brillouin frequency shift (BFS). With increasing of outer coating radius, or with decreasing of the Young’s modulus and Poisson’s ratio of outer coating, the lateral pressure sensitivity increases. By using a double-coated SMF whose outer coating radius is 1500 µm, a high sensitivity of -3.51 MHz/MPa in the range of 0-30 MPa is achieved, which is about five times higher than that of single-coated SMF. At a spatial resolution of 1.5 m, the maximum measurement error of the proposed pressure sensing system is less than 0.09 MPa. © 2023 SPIE.

In recent years,an innovative underactuated robot was developed,named as underactuated cable-driven trusslike manipulator(UCTM),to be suitable in aerospace ***,there has been strong consensus that the stabilization of planar underactuated manipulators without gravity is a great challenge since the system includes a second order nonholonomic constraint and most classical control methods are not suitable for this kind of ***,the complexity of the truss-like structure results in tremendous difficulty of computational complicacy and high nonlinearity during dynamic modelling in addition to controller *** is paramount to solve these difficulties for UCTM's future *** solve the above difficulties,this paper presents a dynamic modelling method for UCTM and a trajectory tracking control method based on partial feedback linearization(PFL)that fulfills the control goal of moving UCTM from its original position to a desired position by tracking a given trajectory of the joint *** achieve this,a model equivalent method is proposed to make UCTM equivalent with a three-link manipulator in the sense of dynamic *** the Lagrangian equation combined with complex vector method is proposed in the dynamic modelling process of UCTM,which simplifies the derivation *** on the established dynamic model,a coordinate transformation method is proposed to transform the control force matrix into the conventional form of an underactuated system,so that the control force can be separated from the unactuated *** PFL method in combination with the LQR control method is then proposed to realize the targets that the joint angles can track given desired *** experiments are conducted to verify the correctness and effectiveness of the proposed methods.

Various natural disasters are closely related to the El Niño - Southern Oscillation (ENSO), the stable generation of accurate sea surface temperature anomaly (SSTA) data is key to exploring the occurrence patterns of ENSO and preventing disasters. In this study, we introduces the Separated Attention Data Generation (SADG) model, which efficiently generates SSTA data by capturing the long-range spatiotemporal relationship. SADG achieves high performance while reducing computational complexity compared to standard self-attention based models, generates up to 18 months of accurate SSTA data. Experiments on CMIP datasets show that its performance is better than other models on various lead times.

Before launching a spacecraft, it is necessary to undergo micro low gravity simulations on the ground to test its reliability. The lifting method is not limited by movement time and space, and can simulate long-term low gravity environments. However, the degree of freedom of spatial mechanisms is gradually increasing, and the motion is becoming increasingly complex, making traditional lifting methods unable to meet the needs. In response to the above issues, a lifting gravity simulation scheme for a multi degree of freedom robotic arm that can achieve complex motion is proposed. The design adopts a single sling combined with a hanger to avoid interference during the motion process. Finally, simulation and experiments have proven the feasibility of the scheme - it can achieve efficient unloading without affecting the normal movement of the equipment.

Persulfate-based oxidation process is newly developed option for waste activated sludge (WAS) though the oxygen activate substance. The ultrasound (US) irradiation-coupled zero-valent iron (ZVI) activated persulfate system could improve dewatering performance, reduce WAS volume, decrease transport and final disposal costs. In this study, three ZVI (Fex) catalysts (Fe0 powder iron, Fe1 sponge iron and Fe2 foam iron) were used in the US/PDS system, whose catalytic performance and the fundamentals of the WAS conditioning were explored and compared. The results showed that the capillary suction time (CST) reduction rates were 89%, 85%, and 87% in US/Fe0/PDS, US/Fe1/PDS, and US/Fe2/PDS, respectively, which indicated that the US/Fex/PDS system had superior conditioning performance. The WAS reduction rate was US/Fe1/PDS > US/Fe2/PDS > US/Fe0/PDS attributed to Fe1 surface activate sites. Similarly, the organic matters characterization showed soluble protein content (PN), polysaccharide content (PS), and microbial by-products were significantly reduced in the US/Fe1/PDS system. Further examination of the thermodynamic parameters revealed that the WAS cohesive interfacial energy (ΔGcohsls ) was minimally reduced to promote release of bound water in the system due to the effective regulation of intermolecular forces. In addition, examination of the trivalent iron/divalent iron ratio (Fe3+/Fe2+) to assess the efficacy of ferric ion recycling showed a significant advantage for US/Fe1/PDS system. On the basis of improving catalyst utilization, activation of PDS produced SO4·- that dominated free radicals to condition WAS, improve dewaterability and achieve WAS reduction. Finally, evaluating laboratory WAS conditioning results and costs, US/Fe1/PDS system has potential practical applications. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Learning effective pruning at initialization from iterative pruning

Pruning at initialization (PaI) reduces training costs by removing weights before training, which becomes increasingly crucial with the growing network size. However, current PaI methods still have a large accuracy gap with iterative pruning, especially at high sparsity levels. This raises an intriguing question: can we get inspiration from iterative pruning to improve the PaI performance? In the lottery ticket hypothesis, the iterative rewind pruning (IRP) finds subnetworks retroactively by rewinding the parameter to the original initialization in every pruning iteration, which means all the subnetworks are based on the initial state. Here, we hypothesise the surviving subnetworks are more important and bridge the initial feature and their surviving score as the PaI criterion. We employ an end-to-end neural network (AutoSparse) to learn this correlation, input the model’s initial features, output their score and then prune the lowest score parameters before training. To validate the accuracy and generalization of our method, we performed PaI across various models. Results show that our approach outperforms existing methods in high-sparsity settings. Notably, as the underlying logic of model pruning is consistent in different models, only one-time IRP on one model is needed (e.g., once IRP on ResNet-18/CIFAR-10, AutoS can be generalized to VGG-16/CIFAR-10, ResNet-18/TinyImageNet, et al.). As the first neural network-based PaI method, we conduct extensive experiments to validate the factors influencing this approach. These results reveal the learning tendencies of neural networks and provide new insights into our understanding and research of PaI from a practical perspective.
