Anderson localization has been widely studied in low-dimensional aperiodic electronic, photonic, and acoustic systems. However, the disorder effect in the plasmonic system, where retardation and long-range couplings interact in complex ways, remains an open question. In this work, we investigate the localization properties of one-dimensional quasiperiodic plasmonic chains using the coupled dipole method and linearized Green's function. Our models, which incorporate nearest-neighbor or long-range dipole interactions, reveal localization transitions, mobility edges, and intermediate phases. It is found that long-range dipole interactions and non-Hermiticity due to retardation both play crucial roles in Anderson localization, yielding the emergence of intermediate phases with varying widths. A link between non-Hermiticity and Anderson transition is established by the mean phase rigidity, revealing strong non-Hermiticity along the phase boundary. The plasmonic model involving long-range interplay and retarded effect presents richer localization phenomena than the electronic counterpart that usually includes only nearest-neighbor coupling, laying a foundation for experimental observations of Anderson localization on plasmonic platforms.

Safeguarding high voltage direct current (HVDC) systems against direct current faults is an inherently demanding task. A promising solution to tackle this challenge is the application of piezoelectrically actuated fast mechanical switches (PA-FMS). However, mechanical resonance and random vibrations in the travel curves of P A-FMS have a substantial impact on their control accuracy. To tackle this challenge, a robust-tube model predictive control (RTMPC) strategy is developed. RTMPC drives the disturbed system state into the minimal robustly positively invariant (mRPI) set centered on the target and ensures that constraints are satisfied. The error feedback gain is calculated using the proposed linear matrix inequality (LMI) based method to minimize the effect of disturbances on the trajectory. An efficient outer approximation method is used to compute the mRPI set. Simulation results show that the critically damped travel curves have been achieved, along with a reduction of the external disturbances by 98%.

In this study, the grain orientation, microstructure evolution and fatigue life prediction of Sn-3Ag-0.5Cu (SAC305) solder joints in fan-out wafer level packaging are studied in terms of thermal shock tests. The heterogenous evolution of microstructures in SAC305 solder joints was investigated using thermal shock and electron backscattered diffraction (EBSD) analysis. When the number of thermal shocks reached 600, the local deformation caused by the thermal expansion mismatch caused the heterolattices in the joint to rotate toward the corners. During deformation, the formation of sub-grains is accompanied by increasing misorientation, accumulation of plastic slip in the strained local area, and activation of the slip system. After that, the stress-strain distribution of SAC305 solder joints during thermal shock was studied using the multi-physics coupling model, and the Coffin-Manson life model was used to simulate the number of failure cycles of solder joints after thermal shock. It is found that for a single solder joint, the number of failure cycles of the solder joints with the upper and lower parts in contact with other materials is basically 600–700 times. The work in this paper provides new insights into the further study of the early stages of grain orientation, microstructural deformation and the accumulation of stored energy associated with these deformations, providing support for a more in-depth study of recrystallization and crack propagation phenomena during thermal shock.

Vo2-Based Colorful Smart Windows with Self-Cleaning Function

Smart windows hold promise for mitigating energy demand for indoor heating or cooling. However, VO2-based thermochromic smart windows face challenges such as high phase transition temperature, limited window color options, and a lack of functional diversity. Herein, we investigated the colorful smart windows utilizing the tungsten-doped VO2 thin films with the phase transition temperature of approximately 23.5 ℃. The surface color of these smart windows can be dynamically adjusted from brown to purple, cyan, yellow, and red by tuning the thickness of the wave-impedance matching layer of HfO2 film, resulted from the interference effect of the HfO2 layer and the underlying WxV1-xO2 layer. Moreover, the HfO2-coated WxV1-xO2 thin film with the HfO2 thickness of 132 nm demonstrates superior optical performance with a solar modulation ability of 9.35%, the low-temperature luminous transmission of 36.81%, and the high-temperature luminous transmission of 38.03%. In addition, the incorporation of SiO2 nanoparticles into the HfO2-coated WxV1-xO2 thin films results in the superhydrophobic property with a water contact angle of 162.1° due to the formed rough surface, which is favor to the self-cleaning of the windows surface. © 2024, The Authors. There exist various indeterministic dynamical systems in practical applications due to various uncertainties in structural geometry, material and loading. It is generally difficult to acquire a priori probabilistic characteristics of these uncertainties based on onsite data later to be used in random dynamical assessments. Therefore, non-probabilistic methods such as interval analysis are suitable for systems carrying uncertain but bounded parameters. Interval analysis method generally resorts to Taylor series expansions of intervallic parameters for estimation of lower and upper bounds of dynamical responses which are solved by perturbation finite element method (PFEM). Nevertheless, computational error is inevitably accumulated during temporal integration of the responses as well as evaluation of their derivatives with respect to parameters. To circumvent this drawback, an improved interval analysis approach called Kriging-surrogate-based general harmonic balance method (KGHBM) is proposed in this paper. In this method, harmonics in the Fourier expansion of the dynamical response are solved by the generalized harmonic balance method in the frequency domain. A surrogate response surface of the harmonic coefficients is established in the parameter space for evaluating the sensitivities of the response with respect to the parameters. Compared with the PFEM, the present method provides better bound predictions of uncertain nonlinear dynamical response. KGHBM can be modified with the adoption of second-order derivatives in the Taylor expansion on the Kriging surrogate model to improve the accuracy of the KGHBM predictions. © 2022 IET Conference Proceedings. The increasing demand for highly efficient and precise machining in the aerospace industry is leading to increasingly stringent requirements for machine tool accuracy measurement and compensation technologies. However, existing methods can only measure the accuracy of machine tools after they have been shut down, using instruments that do not measure the kinematic errors during the machining process. To address this issue, a method for real-time prediction of kinematic errors in a five-axis machine tool has been proposed to enhance machining accuracy and efficiency. The method employs a neural network-based predictive model, which has been trained and validated through experimental testing and data collection using internal sensors of the machine tool. The study reveals that this predictive model can effectively forecast the kinematic errors, through real-time compensation, and can reduce errors by 60-86%, significantly enhancing machine performance. © Published under licence by IOP Publishing Ltd.

Long-Term Dechlorination Performance of the Dehalococcoides-Augmented Bioelectrochemical system and the Functional Microorganism Identification

Electroactive bacteria in microbial communities contribute to electrode-driven dechlorination by Dehalococcoides (Dhc.). To pre-argument Dhc. to bioelectrochemical system to construct the functional consortia is a promising strategy for achieving the complete dechlorination. However, the stability of the long-term dechlorination performance is poorly understood. And the role of electroactive bacteria during the electron transfer (ET) between Dhc. and the electrode has not been studied in co-culture tests within a bioelectrochemical system. To address this gap, we performed the long-term operation with a Dehalococcoides-augmented bioelectrochemical system and enriched functional microorganisms that contribute to ET from the electrode to Dhc. by constructing a stable bioelectrochemical dechlorination system. Subsequently, we cultivated Desulfosporosinus meridiei (Dm), a predicted functional species, in co-culture with Dhc. when −0.3 V (relative to a standard hydrogen electrode) is applied. Our results showed that Dhc./Dm co-cultures improved the maximum ethylene production rate by approximately fourfold compared with the Dhc. monoculture. In addition, Desulfosporosinus facilitated ET between the electrode and Dhc. by enhancing H2 production. These findings provide a theoretical framework for comprehending how electroactive bacteria contribute to bioelectrochemical dehalogenation. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

The combination of supercritical CO2 (SCO2) Brayton cycle and small modular reactors (SMR) is considered as a promising energy conversion system of nuclear energy. Formulating reasonable system control strategies to cope with different load requirements in actual operation is very important. For supercritical CO2 Brayton cycle which adopts conventional heat sources such as fossil energy and solar energy, valve and bypass control have been proven to be effective load following strategies. However, nuclear safety and thermo-hydraulic constraints will impose more stringent control strategy requirements when the reactor is chosen as the system heat source. Few studies have focused on the operation characteristics of the reactor under different control strategies and the coupling effects of the main equipment. In this paper, a dynamic model of a small modular SCO2 Brayton reactor system with integrated bypass control and inventory control is established. A series of protective control measures are proposed, and the control performance of different control strategies is compared and analyzed. In addition, in order to break through the limitation of single control strategy, a coupling control strategy of inventory and bypass is proposed. The results show that the bypass control strategy will increase the temperature of reactor fuel elements and the system's maximum pressure, and bring a certain degree of thermal shock to the heat exchangers. Inventory control strategy has better reactor safety and higher efficiency, but the control speed is slow. The combined control strategy concentrates on bypass and inventory control advantages and can meet the system loads from 0% up to 100%.
