controlling the depth of a gliding robotic dolphin using dual motion control modes

This paper investigates the performance of the dual mode, namely flipper mode and central pattern generator(CPG) mode, for controlling the depth of a gliding robotic dolphin. Subsequent to considering the errors in dynamic models, we propose a depth control system that combines the line-of-sight(LOS)method with an adaptive control approach(ACA) to deal with uncertainties in the model parameters. First,we establish a full-state dynamic model to conduct simulations and optimize the parameters used in later aquatic experiments. Then, we use the LOS method to transform the control target from the depth to the pitch angle and employ the ACA to calculate the control signal. In particular, we optimize the ACA’s control parameters using simulations based on our dynamic model. Finally, our simulated and experimental results demonstrate not only that we can successfully control the robotic dolphin’s depth, but also that its performance was better than that of the CPG-based control, thus indicating that we can achieve three-dimensional motion by combining flipper-based and CPG-based control. The results of this study suggest valuable ideas for practical applications of gliding robotic dolphins.

Evaluation of indocyanine green inhalation to detect air leak sites during video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery: a prospective study

Background: This study aimed to investigate the feasibility and clinical benefits of indocyanine green (ICG) inhalation for detecting air leak sites during video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery (VATS). Methods: Between February 2023 and May 2023, a total of 288 patients underwent VATS were enrolled in this study. Among the population, 72 patients received ICG inhalation test following the traditional submersion sealing test. And 216 patients only underwent the submersion sealing test were matched using 1:3 propensity score matching analysis. The results of ICG inhalation test and the clinical outcomes were compared. Results: In the ICG group, 48 air leak sites were detected in 25 patients (25/72, 34.7%). The conventional submersion sealing test identified 30 air leak sites, while the ICG inhalation test detected 47 sites. Among these detected air leak sites, 34 sites were repaired by suturing or stapling. The postoperative air leak rate in the ICG group (20.8%) was significantly lower than the control group (37.0%, P = 0.011). ICG inhalation test was a favorable factor for reducing postoperative air leaks (OR: 0.40;95%CI: 0.20–0.78;P = 0.008). Conclusions: The ICG inhalation test facilitates the identification of air leak sites that may have been overlooked in the conventional submersion sealing test. This technique is useful to reduce postoperative air leaks for patients undergoing VATS. Completed Interaction Networks for Pedestrian Trajectory Prediction

The social and environmental interactions, as well as the pedestrian goal are crucial for pedestrian trajectory prediction. This is because they could learn both complex interactions in the scenes and the intentions of the pedestrians. However, most existing methods either learn the one-moment social interactions, or supervise the pedestrian trajectories using long-term goal, resulting in suboptimal prediction performances. In this paper, we propose a novel network named Completed Interaction Network (CINet) to simultaneously consider the social interactions in all moments, the environmental interactions and the short-term goal of pedestrians in a unified framework for pedestrian trajectory prediction. Specifically, we propose the Spatio-Temporal Transformer Layer (STTL) to fully mine the spatio-temporal information among historical trajectories of all pedestrians in order to obtain the social interactions in all moments. Additionally, we present the Gradual Goal Module (GGM) to capture the environmental interactions under the supervision of the short-term goal, which is beneficial to understanding the intentions of the pedestrian. Afterwards, we employ the cross-attention to effectively integrate the all-moment social and environmental interactions. The experimental results on three standard pedestrian datasets, i.e., ETH/UCY, SDD and inD demonstrate that our method achieves a new state-of-the-art performance. Furthermore, the visualization results indicate that our method could predict trajectories more reasonably in complex scenarios such as sharp turns, infeasible areas and so on. © 1999-2012 IEEE.

In autonomous driving and mobile robotic systems, obtaining the depths of objects in real-time is crucial. The current network-based methods usually design complex network to achieve 3D object detection or monocular depth estimation for the whole image, resulting in too slow to be applied to mobile robots. The perspective projection-based method can achieve real-time, which calculates the object depth based on the camera parameters, the object sizes in the world coordinates and in image coordinates. While it relies heavily on the accuracy of object size in images coordinates, and the size is usually obtained with errors through detector network. Combining the perspective projection-based methods and network-based methods, we propose a fast object depth estimation method by designing a neural network to learn perspective projection, called Fast-Depth-NPP: 1) Instead of considering the whole image, we only consider the local depth of the image;2) Using local image patches as network inputs avoids measurement errors of object size with detector;3) the use of global information is enhanced by incorporating position encoding. Our method is validated on the mobile robot public dataset Neurons Perception dataset, achieving excellent results and meeting the real-time requirements. © 2022 IEEE.

This article studies the distributed estimation problem of a multi-agent system with bounded absolute and relative range measurements. Parts of the agents are with high-accuracy absolute measurements, which are considered as anchors;the other agents utilize low-accuracy absolute and relative range measurements, each derives an uncertain range that contains its true state in a distributed manner. Different from previous studies, we design a distributed algorithm to handle the range measurements based on extended constrained zonotopes, which has low computational complexity and high precision. With our proposed algorithm, agents can derive their uncertain range sequentially along the chain topology, such that agents with low-accuracy sensors can benefit from the high-accuracy absolute measurements of anchors and improve the estimation performance. Simulation results indicate the effectiveness of our algorithm and verify our method can significantly improve the estimation accuracy. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Deep convection can cause a variety of severe weather conditions such as thunderstorms, strong winds, and heavy rainfall. Satellite observations provide all-weather and multi-directional observations, facilitating the timely detection of such weather systems, which is crucial to saving lives and property. However, previous methods based on channel feature extraction and threshold filtering did not make full use of information in satellite images, which led to limitations on such complex problems as strong convection detection. In this study, we propose a novel framework of a deep learning-based model Convection-UNet to detect convection. We use channel 4 to 7 of FY-4B GHI that we select according to the microphysical properties of convection as input and radar reflectivity as label. We combine the detailed training time and test time data augmentation strategies and build a deep neural network to automatically extract spatial context features and achieve end-to-end learning. Results show that the performance of our method far exceeds the previous channel extraction combined with threshold filtering methods such as BT and BTD at least 0.24 on Fi-measure. We also show that our channel selection and data augmentation strategies are of great significance to detect convection.

Currently, control strategies for distributed photovoltaic (PV) power generation are relatively single and rigid, and cannot flexibly adapt to the diverse demands of power grids in different scenarios. Firstly, this paper analyzes the adaptive relationship between different dispatching demands, the regulation ability of distributed PV, and the characteristics of the local voltage. Secondly, for different scenarios, the coordinated controller determines the reference values of active power and reactive power given to the inverter. Thus, distributed PV power control modes which can adapt to different scenarios have been established. Then, these control modes can be classified into single control modes and compound control modes according to the complexity of scenario demands. On this basis, a specific two-layer adaptive control strategy and process of distributed PV power generation in a low-voltage distribution network are further proposed, which takes into account both external demands of the distribution network and the regulation ability of distributed PV. Finally, a case study is given to verify the rationality and effectiveness of the two-layer adaptive scenarios control strategy. This strategy can effectively improve the comprehensive support ability of distributed PV power generation towards the power grid in multiple scenarios, and improve the stable operation level of the regional power grid. © 2023 IEEE.

Global Navigation Satellite systems (GNSS) can provide real-time positioning information for outdoor users, but cannot for indoor scenarios or heavily occluded outdoor scenarios. Strap-down Inertial Navigation system (SINS) are widely used to locate people in complex interior or heavily occluded outdoor scenarios due to its light weight and low power consumption. However, IMU of SINS are noisy, and the sampling data error is large, which is a divergence of the error with time. Therefore, it will generate a positioning accumulation error, which affects the final positioning accuracy. The problem of cumulative IMU errors is usually dealt with by Zero-Velocity Update (ZUPT). The zero-velocity detection part of basic ZUPT method usually uses a single threshold to determine the gait of pedestrian, which often has the problem of gait misjudgment and omission. To address these problems, this paper proposes a composite conditional detection method to solve the problem of misjudgment in the zero-velocity interval. In addition, we redesign the zero-velocity update algorithm and uses the Cubature Kalman filter (CKF) for pedestrian positioning error correction. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed ZUPT method based on dual-threshold detection can better detect the interval between pedestrian motion and stationery than ones with single threshold. The zero-velocity update algorithm based on CKF has higher performance than conventional EKF and UKF methods, which constrains the cumulative error of SINS to about 0.2% of the whole walking distance.
