A skull reconstruction robot has been developed to effectively overcome shortcomings of the traditional skull surgery and improve its efficiency and quality. In this study, kinematics modeling and trajectory planning for the robot are carried out. Firstly, the kinematic model of the robot is established based on the D-H method. The positioning points, which are used to determine the cutting plane, are given on the surface of the skull by the surgeon. The contour data for cutting can be obtained using a two dimensional laser scanning sensor, by adjusting the scanning light curtain to coincide with the cutting plane. Then, to ensure that the tools fixed at the robot end can always be perpendicular to the skull surface during the cutting or drawing process, the principal component analysis is introduced to design the normal vectors at the selected key points of the point cloud data for the skull surface. Moreover, the quintic polynomial interpolation method is used to construct the curves between the adjacent key points to make up for the defects of the skull surface and ensure the smoothness of the trajectory. Finally, workspace analysis based on Monte Carlo method is implemented, and the proposed kinematics modeling and trajectory planning methods are validated by simulation. © 2021 IEEE.

In modern society, traffic accidents are becoming an essential social safety issue that cannot be ignored. Along with the convenience of the high-speed development of modernization, the prosperity of vehicles has also led to severe traffic accidents, which cause massive loss of lives and properties every year. Accident analysis and prediction based on big data have become increasingly important in social transportation. However, the traditional data analysis and prediction methods only focused on either macroscope(transportation) or microscope(vehicle), and the relationships between the two layers are missing. This paper proposes a novel analysis framework by introducing the mesoscopic factors to bridge the transportation and vehicle operation domain under the parallel driving setting. The feature aggregation and mesoscopic factors extraction are included in the proposed prediction strategy to improve the performance of various commonly used decision tree-based classifiers. Methods are compared under the most recent 5-year accident database, which stores over three million records. Insights are discussed based on the future application of connected autonomous vehicles and intelligent road infrastructures.

Pneumatic artificial muscle (PAM) usually exhibits strong hysteresis nonlinearity and time-varying features that bring PAM modeling and control difficulties. In this paper, an adaptive Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy model is established based on nonlinear auto-regression moving average with exogenous input (NARMAX) structure to describe PAM's characteristics. Experiments show that compared with other phenomenology-based models, the presented model has lower predictive error and better adaptability. Finally, a model predictive controller is designed and validated to verify the adaptive T-S fuzzy model's practicability.

Machine learning in fine art paintings is attracting increasing attention recently. Image captioning of paintings is of great importance for painting analysis, but it is rarely studied. The paintings have abstract expressions and lack annotated datasets, leading to the data-hungry problem in painting captioning. Thus, painting captioning has more significant challenges than photographic image captioning. This paper makes a novel attempt at generating content descriptions of paintings. We generate virtual paintings using the style transfer technique to deal with the data-hungry problem, then train the painting captioning model via a two-step manner. We evaluate our method on an annotated small-scale painting captioning dataset and demonstrate our improvements.

In this paper, a new constrained cost value iteration (CCVI) adaptive dynamic programming (ADP) algorithm is developed to solve optimal control problems with constrained cost function. The CCVI algorithm is initialized by a feasible control law, and the cost function of this initial feasible control constitutes the constraint condition in the policy update step. The convergence and optimality of the CCVI are analyzed. Furthermore, the feasibility of any iterative control law and the on-line evolving control law are proven. It is emphasized that the feasibility of any iterative control law and the on-line evolving control law guarantee that the CCVI algorithm can be used in situations where the cost function constraint is extremely important. Finally, a simulation example is given to verify the effect of the developed algorithm.

Collision risk analysis is an important part of airspace safety assessment. Based on Event model, the lateral position deviation probability of military aircraft is calculated. Combining with the probability model of lateral position deviation of civil aviation aircraft, the frequency of military aircraft collision box passing through separation sheet in high slope circling training is calculated. A collision risk assessment model between training flying aircraft in military training airspace and aircrafts flying in civil aviation route is constructed. Through the simulation calculation of the lateral collision risk of military and civil aviation, the size, layout, and use suggestions of military high slope circling training airspace are obtained, which can provide reference for the airspace safety assessment. © Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd 2020.

Online progressive instance-balanced sampling for weakly supervised object detection

Based on multiple instance detection networks (MIDN), plenty of works have contributed tremendous efforts to weakly supervised object detection (WSOD). However, most methods neglect the fact that the overwhelming negative instances exist in each image during the training phase, which would mislead the training and make the network fall into local minima. To tackle this problem, an online progressive instance-balanced sampling (OPIS) algorithm based on hard sampling and soft sampling is proposed in this paper. The algorithm includes two modules: a progressive instance balance (PIB) module and a progressive instance reweighting (PIR) module. The PIB module combining random sampling and IoU-balanced sampling progressively mines hard negative instances while balancing positive instances and negative instances. The PIR module further utilizes classifier scores and IoUs of adjacent refinements to reweight the weights of positive instances for making the network focus on positive instances. Extensive experimental results on the PASCAL VOC 2007 and 2012 datasets demonstrate the proposed method can significantly improve the baseline, which is also comparable to many existing state-of-the-art results. In addition, compared to the baseline, the proposed method requires no extra network parameters and the supplementary training overheads are small, which could be easily integrated into other methods based on the instance classifier refinement paradigm. As a significant composition of art, fine art painting is becoming a research hotspot in machine learning community. With unique aesthetic value, paintings have quite different representations from natural images, making them irreplaceable. Meanwhile, the lack of training data is common in painting-related machine learning tasks. Therefore, the synthesis of fine art painting is meaningful and challenging work. There are two main types of generative models for image synthesis: generative adversarial networks (GANs) and likelihood-based models. GAN-based models can obtain high-quality samples but usually sacrifice diversity and training stability. Diffusion models are a class of likelihood-based models and have recently been shown to achieve state-of-the-art quality on the image synthesis tasks. In this paper, we explore generating fine art paintings by using diffusion models. We carried out the experiments on the partial impression paintings from the Wikiart dataset. The results demonstrate that the diffusion model can generate high-quality samples, and it is easy to train to cover more target distribution than the GAN-based methods.

Objective To explore the semi-supervised learning(SSL) algorithm for long-tail endoscopic image classification with limited *** We explored semi-supervised long-tail endoscopic image classification in HyperKvasir,the largest gastrointestinal public dataset with 23 diverse ***-supervised learning algorithm FixMatch was applied based on consistency regularization and *** splitting the training dataset and the test dataset at a ratio of 4:1,we sampled 20%,50%,and 100% labeled training data to test the classification with limited *** The classification performance was evaluated by micro-average and macro-average evaluation metrics,with the Mathews correlation coefficient(MCC) as the overall *** algorithm improved the classification performance,with MCC increasing from 0.8761 to 0.8850,from 0.8983 to 0.8994,and from 0.9075 to 0.9095 with 20%,50%,and 100% ratio of labeled training data,*** a 20% ratio of labeled training data,SSL improved both the micro-average and macro-average classification performance;while for the ratio of 50% and 100%,SSL improved the micro-average performance but hurt macro-average *** analyzing the confusion matrix and labeling bias in each class,we found that the pseudo-based SSL algorithm exacerbated the classifier’ s preference for the head class,resulting in improved performance in the head class and degenerated performance in the tail *** SSL can improve the classification performance for semi-supervised long-tail endoscopic image classification,especially when the labeled data is extremely limited,which may benefit the building of assisted diagnosis systems for low-volume ***,the pseudo-labeling strategy may amplify the effect of class imbalance,which hurts the classification performance for the tail class.

The sEMG-based gesture recognition has great potential in human-computer interaction. However, the current approaches are far from optimal. In this paper, a novel convolutional neural network which combines the multi-scale kernal and feature fusion (MKFF-CNN) is proposed. This model could extract multi-scale features and make full use of these feature maps. One dataset called “gForce dataset” is recorded in this work, comprising 13 able-bodied participants. To verify the effectiveness of the proposed model, evaluations on both the gForce dataset and the Ninapro DB6 are conducted. The experimental results demonstrate that, MKFF-CNN achieves an accuracy of 97.65% on the gForce dataset, which is 1.39% higher than that of the subnetwork without early fusion, and at least 6.54% higher than that of the subnetwork with single-scale convolution kernel. On the Ninapro DB6, MKFF-CNN achieves 98.52% accuracy, which is 1.3% higher than the state-of-the-art works, showing the superiority of the proposed model.
