This paper executes a comparative analysis between alternative-pole flux-switching and inter-modular biased-flux permanent magnet (PM) motors. Despite their close structural similarities, the former puts magnets not only between stator modules, but also close to the armature windings. However, the inter-modular PM (IMPM) motor only occupies spaces between stator modules. This type of occupation allows this structure to provide a safe operation point for PMs. Not considering the PM's recoil-phenomenon, the torque density of the IMPM motor is not as significant as the alternative-pole flux-switching PM (AP-FSPM) motor. This is because of the four-operating mode of the AP-FSPM structure which enables it to increase the torque density by utilizing the PMs in every moment of the operation. But, when the demagnetization of the AP-FSPM's PMs is taken into account, the torque density and torque per PM values of the AP-FSPM structure plummets. A complete full-load demagnetization analysis is done in order to get a better understanding of how the performance of the IMPM structure supersedes the AP-FSPM structure. 2D finite element analysis is used to extract the most important indexes of both topologies. © 2023 IEEE.

In this article, we address the problem of spectrum scarcity in cellular networks (CNs). We propose a backup channel (BuC) for cellular users (CUs) who are in the same macro-cell under the control of a single macro base station (eNB). This BuC operates in the television white space and is detected by the CUs through a cognitive radio energy detection channel sensing technique with a certain probability of success. When the regular channels with the cellular eNB are all occupied, the CUs within the same coverage area of the macro eNB can utilize the sensed BuC to establish a controlled out-band device-to-device link for communication. The BuC bypasses the eNB and reduces the burden on the core of the CN. This leads to improvements in the capacity of the cellular eNB. In the proposed system model, each CU and eNB is equipped with two antennas for communication in two separate bands, i.e., cellular and TV bands. Through simulations, we have observed significant reductions in the blocking probability and probability of call delays. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper introduces a novel approach for enabling real-time imitation of human head motion by a Nao robot, with a primary focus on elevating human-robot interactions. By using the robust capabilities of the MediaPipe as a computer vision library and the DeepFace as an emotion recognition library, this research endeavors to capture the subtleties of human head motion, including blink actions and emotional expressions, and seamlessly incorporate these indicators into the robot's responses. The result is a comprehensive framework which facilitates precise head imitation within human-robot interactions, utilizing a closed-loop approach that involves gathering real-time feedback from the robot's imitation performance. This feedback loop ensures a high degree of accuracy in modeling head motion, as evidenced by an impressive R2 score of 96.3 for pitch and 98.9 for yaw. Notably, the proposed approach holds promise in improving communication for children with autism, offering them a valuable tool for more effective interaction. In essence, proposed work explores the integration of real-time head imitation and real-time emotion recognition to enhance human-robot interactions, with potential benefits for individuals with unique communication needs. © 2023 IEEE.

Introduction: Rehabilitation for conditions affecting mobility, such as stroke, muscle atrophy, and others, poses significant challenges in traditional physiotherapy practices. Engaging patients in enjoyable exercises is crucial for maintaining compliance with rehabilitation protocols. In response, this paper introduces a pioneering game-based approach to rehabilitation, leveraging posture detection technology. Materials and Methods: A game-based rehabilitation system was developed utilizing deep learning techniques through the MediaPipe framework for posture and hand gesture recognition. The system analyzes user posture in real time via a webcam and translates these movements into game controls, allowing patients to interact with popular games like Subway Surfers to simulate physical activities such as running and jumping. Latency between patient movements and in-game responses was measured across three hardware configurations (8GB, 12GB, and 16GB RAM) to evaluate system performance and responsiveness. Results and Discussion: Latency decreased with higher RAM, with the lowest measured at 430 ms on a 16GB configuration. This real-time responsiveness enhances patient engagement, making the rehabilitation process more immersive and effective. By leveraging posture detection technology, this innovative system bridges the gap between the necessity of rehabilitation exercises and the appeal of gaming, offering a promising solution for improving treatment outcomes across diverse age groups and conditions. © 2024 IEEE.

The ever-increasing focus on preventative healthcare and remote patient monitoring has driven the need for innovative solutions. Traditionally, measuring vital signs in both clinical and home settings has relied on a collection of individual devices, often leading to cluttered setups, patient discomfort, and potential inaccuracies due to user error. This paper proposes a multi-parameter acquisition system designed to address these limitations. The system integrates the measurement of essential parameters into a single, user-friendly device. This streamlined approach not only reduces measurement complexity but also improves patient comfort by eliminating the need for multiple devices and cumbersome wires. The design of the system, including its sensors, hardware components, and data processing unit is presented in detail. The device serves a dual purpose. Firstly, it empowers individuals at home by providing them with a single device to monitor their vital signs. Secondly, for hospitals, the device offers a streamlined and less cumbersome way to visualize essential patient parameters, allowing for improved monitoring efficiency. © 2024 IEEE.

Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) are an emerging technology with load-following capabilities, offering significant potential for enhancing grid stability and resilience. This paper presents the development of an SMR model by replacing an existing generator in the IEEE 39-bus system with a synchronous machine round rotor configured to reflect the operational characteristics of an SMR. The paper focuses on analyzing the dynamic fault response of the SMR at various operating levels, including minimum generation, half, and maximum capacity. Key metrics such as terminal voltage (p.u.) are evaluated to assess the SMR's ability to maintain stability during and after fault scenarios. By examining the SMR's performance under different generation conditions, this paper provides valuable insights into the feasibility of integrating SMRs into modern power systems and their contributions to grid stability during transient events. © 2025 IEEE.

Virtual reality (VR) is distinguished by the rich, multimodal, im-mersive sensory information and affordances provided to the user. However, when moving about an immersive virtual world the vi-sual display often conflicts with other sensory cues due to design, the nature of the simulation, or to system limitations (for example impoverished vestibular motion cues during acceleration in racing games). Given that conflicts between sensory cues have been as-sociated with disorientation or discomfort, and theoretically could distort spatial perception, it is important that we understand how and when they are manifested in the user experience. To this end, this set of experiments investigates the impact of mismatch between physical and virtual motion parallax on the per-ception of the depth of an apparently perpendicular dihedral angle (a fold) and its distance. We applied gain distortions between visual and kinesthetic head motion during lateral sway movements and measured the effect of gain on depth, distance and lateral space compression. We found that under monocular viewing, observers made smaller object depth and distance settings especially when the gain was greater than 1. Estimates of target distance declined with increasing gain under monocular viewing. Similarly, mean set depth decreased with increasing gain under monocular viewing, except at 6.0 m. The effect of gain was minimal when observers viewed the stimulus binocularly. Further, binocular viewing (stereopsis) improved the precision but not necessarily the accuracy of gain perception. Overall, the lateral compression of space was similar in the stereoscopic and monocular test conditions. Taken together, our results show that the use of large presentation distances (at 6 m) combined with binocular cues to depth and distance enhanced humans' tolerance to visual and kinesthetic mismatch.

We apply Extreme Value Analysis on sets of Electric Vehicle (EV) charging data with the goal to extract indications in the data of future trends in the demand for EV charging. The datasets have been provided by DEI blue, a service designed to provide integrated e-mobility solutions to individuals, companies and public administration throughout Greece. Eventhough the data are limited as they have been collected during a period of only twelve months, our analysis still reveals trends in the data highlighting a probable seasonality. The seasonality is observed during periods of extreme heat, regional population mobility and incoming visitors. These occurrences impact technical aspects of battery efficiency, grid capacity and a shift of behavioural usage patterns. Our findings cannot be ignored by policy makers as they are expected to intensify in the years to come due to the fast-rising number of EVs in use. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2024.

The notion of algorithmic fairness has been actively explored from various aspects of fairness, such as counterfactual fairness (CF) and group fairness (GF). However, the exact relationship between CF and GF remains to be unclear, especially in image classification tasks;the reason is because we often cannot collect counterfactual samples regarding a sensitive attribute, essential for evaluating CF, from the existing images (e.g., a photo of the same person but with different secondary sex characteristics). In this paper, we construct new image datasets for evaluating CF by using a high-quality image editing method and carefully labeling with human annotators. Our datasets, CelebA-CF and LFW-CF, build upon the popular image GF benchmarks;hence, we can evaluate CF and GF simultaneously. We empirically observe that CF does not imply GF in image classification, whereas previous studies on tabular datasets observed the opposite. We theoretically show that it could be due to the existence of a latent attribute G that is correlated with, but not caused by, the sensitive attribute (e.g., secondary sex characteristics are highly correlated with hair length). From this observation, we propose a simple baseline, Counterfactual Knowledge Distillation (CKD), to mitigate such correlation with the sensitive attributes. Extensive experimental results on CelebA-CF and LFW-CF demonstrate that CF-achieving models satisfy GF if we successfully reduce the reliance on G (e.g., using CKD). © 2024 Neural information processing systems foundation. Malicious utilization of a query interface can compromise the confidentiality of ML-as-a-Service (MLaaS) systems via model extraction attacks. Previous studies have proposed to perturb the predictions of the MLaaS system as a defense against model extraction attacks. However, existing prediction perturbation methods suffer from a poor privacy-utility balance and cannot effectively defend against the latest adaptive model extraction attacks. In this paper, we propose a novel prediction perturbation defense named MODELGUARD, which aims at defending against adaptive model extraction attacks while maintaining a high utility of the protected system. We develop a general optimization problem that considers different kinds of model extraction attacks, and MODELGUARD provides an information-theoretic defense to efficiently solve the optimization problem and achieve resistance against adaptive attacks. Experiments show that MODELGUARD attains significantly better defensive performance against adaptive attacks with less loss of utility compared to previous defenses.
