As continuous-flow microfluidic biochips technology rapidly advances, its automated synthesis methods require adapting to increasingly complex and stringent biochemical applications. In particular, with the introduction of time-sensitive bioassays, in this work, we present a timing-driven high-level synthesis method to optimize the resource efficiency of bioassays considering the time constraints. Specifically, we investigate the existing forms of time constraints and propose a corresponding flexible modeling approach based on reaction-control which can achieve downward compatibility for physical design. Additionally, we also analyze the impact of storage and wash on time constraints. The experimental results show that our method achieves efficient execution and low devices cost while satisfying time constraints.

Diffusion MRI (dMRI) is widely used for the detection and diagnosis of various pathologies due to its non-invasive nature. However, its signal acquisition process is relatively slow and susceptible to motions. In order to accelerate reconstruction process, many deep learning-based methods have been developed in recent years to achieve promising results, while most of them are supervised based methods and require fully sampled data which are difficult to obtain in practical applications to train the network. Self-supervised based methods were proposed to deal with this problem to a certain extent, however, they are devoted only to conventional MRI data, ignoring the correlation between the directions of dMRI data. To address this issue, we propose a self-supervised fast reconstruction method for dMRI based on multi-directional assistance. The method better utilizes the information between dMRI data directions by Partition-Replace operation, cleverly constructing data pairs and designing effective self-supervised strategy for bi-directional prediction, which can overcome the problem of data incompleteness and guide the model to reconstruct unsampled signals in spite of the difficulty of acquiring fully sampled data. Experimental results show that our method achieves better reconstruction in the absence of fully sampled data, even with an 8-fold acceleration factor.

Fine-tuning pre-trained language models, such as BERT, has shown enormous success among various NLP tasks. Though simple and effective, the process of fine-tuning has been found unstable, which often leads to unexpected poor performance. To increase stability and generalizability, most existing works resort to maintaining the parameters or representations of pre-trained models during fine-tuning. Nevertheless, very little work explores mining the reliable part of pre-learned information that can help to stabilize fine-tuning. To address this challenge, we introduce a novel solution in which we fine-tune BERT with stabilized cross-layer mutual information. Our method aims to preserve the reliable behaviors of cross-layer information propagation, instead of preserving the information itself, of the pre-trained model. Therefore, our method circumvents the domain conflicts between pre-trained and target tasks. We conduct extensive experiments with popular pre-trained BERT variants on NLP datasets, demonstrating the universal effectiveness and robustness of our method.

LEAP: A Low-Cost Spark SQL Query Optimizer using Pairwise Comparison

Selecting a good execution plan can significantly improve the query efficiency of Spark SQL. Several machine learning-based techniques have been proposed to select good execution plans for DBMS, but none of them perform well on Spark SQL due to the following issues. (1) Limited compatibility with Spark SQL: these approaches rely on physical operator enumeration, while Spark SQL doesn't support it; (2) Unreliable cost estimation: they often select execution plans with poor performance due to inaccurate cost estimation; (3) Time-consuming plan enumeration: they take much time to generate a large number of candidate execution plans in Spark SQL. To overcome these issues, in this paper, we propose LEAP, the first learned query optimizer tailored for Spark SQL, which can be integrated seamlessly into Spark SQL and solves the compatibility issue. Also, to avoid the unreliable cost value estimation, LEAP selects execution plans with an estimation-free method, which directly performs comparisons between the plans. Furthermore, LEAP employs an efficient progressive plan enumeration algorithm with pruning techniques to find better plans with fewer enumerations. Extensive experiments on three public benchmarks show the effectiveness of LEAP. It reduces the end-to-end execution time of the native optimizer by up to 54% and other learned methods by up to 94%.

Accurate brain tumor segmentation of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) images requires the integration of multimodal data in effective collaborative learning. However, clinical scenarios often face missing modalities, significantly impacting segmentation performance. In this paper, we propose the penta-encoder with medical transformer (Penta-MedTrans) for incomplete multimodal learning, which consists of four main components: a modality-specific encoder (MSE), a modality-dynamic encoder (MDE), a multimodal fusion module (MMFM) and a convolutional decoder. The MSE extracts unique features for each modality, while the MDE captures inter-modal semantics to address missing modalities. The MMFM establishes and aligns long-range correlations between modal-invariant features and global semantics of tumor regions. The convolutional decoder generates robust segmentation results by progressively upsampling and fusing modality-invariant features. We extensively validated our method on the BraTS 2020 and BraTS 2021 datasets for brain tumor segmentation. Results showed that our method outperforms SOTA for incomplete multimodal brain tumor segmentation across most subsets.

T-Assess: An Efficient data Quality Assessment System Tailored for Trajectory data

With the widespread use of GPS-enabled devices and services, trajectory data fuels services in a variety of fields, such as transportation and smart cities. However, trajectory data often contains errors stemming from inaccurate GPS measurements, low sampling rates, and transmission interruptions, yielding low-quality trajectory data with negative effects on downstream services. Therefore, a crucial yet tedious endeavor is to assess the quality of trajectory data, serving as a guide for subsequent data cleaning and analyses. Despite some studies addressing general-purpose data quality assessment, no studies exist that are tailored specifically for trajectory *** more effectively diagnose the quality of trajectory data, we propose T-Assess, an automated trajectory data quality assessment system. T-Assess is built on three fundamental principles: i) extensive coverage, ii) versatility, and iii) efficiency. To achieve comprehensive coverage, we propose assessment criteria spanning validity, completeness, consistency, and fairness. To provide high versatility, T-Assess supports both offline and online evaluations for full-batch trajectory datasets as well as real-time trajectory streams. In addition, we incorporate an evaluation optimization strategy to achieve assessment efficiency. Extensive experiments on four real-life benchmark datasets offer insight into the effectiveness of T-Assess at quantifying trajectory data quality beyond the capabilities of state-of-the-art data quality systems.

Social media is the platform for most people to share their opinions, emojis are also widely used to express moods, emotions, and feelings on social media. There have been many researched on emojis and sentiment analysis. However, existing methods mainly face two limitations. First, since deep learning relies on large amounts of labeled data, the training samples of emoji are not enough to achieve the training effect. Second, they consider the sentiment of emojis and texts separately, not fully exploring the impact of emojis on the sentiment polarity of texts. In this paper, we propose a joint learning sentiment analysis method incorporating emoji-augmentation, and the method has two advantages compared with the existing work. First, We optimize the easy data augmentation method so that the newly generated sentences can also preserve the semantic information of emojis, which relieves the problem of insufficient training data with emojis. Second, it fuses emojis and text features to allow the model to better learn the mutual emotional semantics between text and emojis, jointly training emojis and words to obtain the sentence representations containing more semantic information of both emojis and text. Our experimental results show that the proposed method can significantly improve the performance compared with several baselines on two datasets.

Strong noise is one of the biggest challenges in controlled-source electromagnetic (CSEM) exploration, which severely affects the quality of the recorded signal. We develop a novel and effective CSEM noise attenuation method that integrates a deep convolutional neural network (DCNN) with a high-quality sounding curve screening mechanism. This method first uses a DCNN to learn the large-scale noise characteristics of CSEM measured data and build a DCNN denoising model for attenuating the noise. Because some impulse noise remains after DCNN denoising, the high-quality sounding curve screening mechanism is innovatively applied to optimize the DCNN denoised data. The core of this method is the smoothness value (SV), which quantitatively evaluates the smoothness of the sounding curve (apparent resistivity curve). In effect, the mechanism segments the overall DCNN denoised data and calculates the corresponding sounding curve and its SV for each segment. The highest-quality sounding curve can be screened out by comparing the SVs of all curves as well as obtaining the highest-quality data segment present in the overall DCNN denoised data. Finally, our method is validated with synthetic and field data, demonstrating its feasibility and effectiveness in attenuating large-scale CSEM noise. The quality of CSEM data, which is heavily affected by noise, is significantly improved after processing by our method. © 2025 Society of Exploration Geophysicists. All rights reserved.

In the domain of Multimodal Relation Extraction (MRE), we present the $\color{Red}{\text{W}}$atcher-$\color{Red}{\text{M}}$ediated $\color{Red}{\text{A}}$ttention $\color{Red}{\text{J}}$oint $\color{Red}{\text{L}}$earning Model ($\color{Red}{\text{WMAJL}}$), a novel approach addressing the challenges of modality alignment noise, cross-modal fusion disparity, preservation of textual relative position information, and the distinctiveness of classification labels. WMAJL employs an integrative framework leveraging contrastive learning and variational autoencoder constraints to mitigate modality alignment noise by prioritizing relevant semantic data and effectively reducing extraneous noise that does not contribute to the task. The model’s innovative architecture includes a mediator watcher, which facilitates enhanced cross-modal fusion by enabling nuanced information exchange between textual and visual modalities while preserving the unique characteristics of each modality. Additionally, the design of auxiliary tasks, such as Named Entity Recognition (NER), and output supervision constructs loss functions that preserve relative position information, ensuring a precise depiction of entity relationships throughout the multilayer encoding processes. A key differentiator of WMAJL is its label-centric self-information loss technique, inspired by InfoNCE, which trains the model to cluster similar relation labels in semantically coherent areas, thereby optimizing classification label uniqueness by discerning subtle differences among relation types. The synergistic application of these strategies has led to a significant enhancement of WMAJL’s performance, as evidenced by its state-of-the-art F1 score of $\color{Red}{84.93\%}$ on the MNRE dataset. This achievement surpasses existing benchmarks and sets a new standard for multimodal knowledge extraction, underscoring WMAJL’s potential to revolutionize the MRE landscape.

Distracted driving causes a significant number of traffic accidents each year, making it a crucial area of research to monitor the driver’s state and prevent accidents. Although convolutional networks are widely used for detecting driver distraction, they face several issues, such as poor generalization ability, high model capacity, and response latency. To tackle these challenges, this paper introduces a nimble and low-latency algorithm named MViTCNet, which utilizes the MobileViT module for the identification of driver distraction while operating within constrained computational resources. The MViTCNet algorithm extracts local features and constructs an original feature map, which is fused with a global feature representation processed by a Transformer to capture finer details and obtain a larger receptive field. Additionally, the classic convolutional module MBConv is employed to reduce spatial redundancy, and downsampling is used to obtain low-resolution feature maps. By stacking multiple modules to learn more complex feature representations, the network structure increases in depth and width, resulting in a better fit for complex data distributions. Experiments on an embedded hardware platform show that MViTCNet achieves an acceptable trade-off, with an accuracy of 91.04% on the StateFarm dataset and 97.80% on the LDDB dataset at a latency of 28.9±5.3 milliseconds, outperforming existing methods.
