In horizontal gas-liquid slug flow, the translational velocity of the liquid slug and its axial velocity profile are important in guiding pipeline design and studying the formation and development mechanism of the liquid slug. This paper proposes a method for measuring the translational velocity in horizontal gas-liquid slug flow with a single optical fiber probe (OFP) based on fiber optic reflectometer technique (FOR). The wavelet synchronosqueeze transform (WSST) method is used to extract the frequency of the oscillation signal and to calculate the local velocity. Experiments under 15 velocity conditions are carried out in horizontal DN50 pipeline. The maximum velocity inside the liquid slug generally appears in the slug head area. As the distance between the probe tip and the front interface of the slug increases, the local velocity decreases and eventually stabilizes. The maximum velocity at the slug head area is selected as translational velocity of the slug. Compared with Bendiksen's empirical formula, the mean absolute percentage error (MAPE) is 5.44%. Under most velocity conditions, the relative error does not exceed 10%.

Planar Laser-Induced Fluorescence (PLIF) has been widely applied in the investigation of annular flow. However, it faced impediments due to the imaging distortions from the curvature of the pipe wall and the fluctuations at the gas-liquid interface. In this paper, the influence of circumferential waves on PLIF40 imaging is examined. Employing optical path analysis, the influence of pipe wall curvature is corrected. Numerical calculations are utilized to scrutinize the total internal reflection induced by circumferential fluctuations with varying amplitudes and liquid film thicknesses. The results indicate that the underestimating liquid film thickness in traditional PLIF90, stemming from light occlusion, has the negligible effects on PLIF40. Furthermore, considering the uneven distribution of the fluctuations at the gas-liquid interface, a dual-sided PLIF40 method is proposed to mitigate the impact of total internal reflection. Numerical calculations and experiments are conducted to validate the effectiveness of the method. And the analysis demonstrates the notable performance of dual-sided PLIF40 in suppressing total reflection and recovering the transient flow field.

In the virtual simulation platform, frequent physical interactions between the robot and the environment poses extremely high demands on the handling of collisions and contacts in the simulation. Current mainstream virtual simulation platforms, in pursuit of real-time performance, have sacrificed some accuracy in simulation algorithms, leading to control strategies obtained in training that are difficult to directly transfer to actual physical machines. This virtual-physical discrepancy has significantly impacted the efficiency and effectiveness of mobile robot simulation. Existing work has attempted to use more accurate mathematical modeling and design more realistic solvers, but at the cost of uncontrollable problem scale and extremely high computational complexity. Starting from this perspective, this paper designs a non-penetration simulation algorithm based on extended Position-Based Dynamics (XPBD), which improves the physical processing accuracy during the simulation while ensuring real-time performance, enhances the fidelity of the simulation, and reduces the virtual-physical discrepancy. Simulation experiments have been conducted to validate the reliability of our proposed algorithm. © 2024 IEEE.

The current trend is to perform signal processing algorithms in the digital domain, rather than in the analog domain. Thus, field programmable gate arrays (FPGAs) which has advantages in digital signal processing become a common choice for digital implementation of various analog signal processing functional module. However, performing complex algorithms using hardware description languages could be a challenging task. This paper demonstrates the use of high-level synthesis method to implement digital signal processing functions. Through high-level synthesis, some frequently inves-tigated signal processing functions, e.g. the lock-in amplifier, FIR filters, could be conveniently implemented with optimized pipelining performance. Results showed that, the development speed and optimization capability of high-level synthesis method in developing mathematical algorithms has demonstrated great advantages against the common hardware description language implementation. The pipelining optimization has enabled the lock-in amplifier 3 times faster than the common implementation. In addition, it also offers the convenience in accomplish the interface of IP core to the embedded ARM core.

In pursuit of a broad measurement range and high precision standards for monocular stereo particle image velocimetry systems, a model for the structural parameters of monocular stereo PIV system is devised. The model is utilized to analyze the influence of different parameters on three key considerations: the effective field of view width ratio, the effective field of view width ratio within depth of field, and system measurement errors. The examination revealed varying interactions among these considerations with alterations in different structural parameters. Consequently, integration of these three considerations into a genetic algorithm is proposed to derive optimal structural parameters. Employing a high-speed camera with a 35mm focal length, the establishment of a monocular stereo PIV system successfully facilitates the measurement of three-dimensional velocity fields in gas-liquid two-phase flows.

The electrical resistance tomography (ERT) could be utilized as an effective tool for imaging the multi-phase flows, which are frequently met in the flotation and stirring processes. In this paper, a level measurement method that employs ERT and linear sensor has been proposed to determine the interface level of pulp-froth two-phase flows from ERT images. It could estimate the interface by tracing the changes in the conductivity profile. In addition, the sensitivity matrix of linear sensor has been investigated, i.e., by utilizing the prior information of layered conductivity distribution. Numerical simulations showed that, the method could achieve a good estimation for the level of pulp-froth interface, with a maximum relative error of ±6%. Experimental results have also verified a similar accuracy, with a maximum relative error of ±8%.

Bubbles are prevalent across key industries such as energy, chemical, biomedical, and oil and gas transportation, and have a significant impact on production efficiency and process safety. In this paper, an adaptive algorithm for bubble identification utilizing laser scanning is developed in order to better extract bubbles with varying brightness intensity in the original image. The grayscale distributions of the rows and columns of the captured slice images are explored, where the presence of a bubble displays a distinct tendency to be first flat, then decreasing, next increasing, and finally flat. Therefore, the grayscale is divided into three parts: background, transition region, and bubble. The bubble edge can be determined by the grayscale distribution and gradient in the transition region. The flowchart of this adaptive algorithm is established. Based on the proposed algorithm, the identification of bubbles in a tank is achieved and the results are compared with those acquired by the Otsu method, revealing the better performance of the proposed algorithm. Besides, the bubble shape is examined, and the bubbles are visualized subsequently.

In the electromagnetic induction tomography (EMT/MIT) systems, the conventional method for driving excitation coils involves the combinational use of direct digital synthesizer (sinusoidal signal generator) and power amplifier. Generally, this circuit scheme has limited output current, i.e., several hundred milliamperes, producing relatively low magnetic field intensity within the sensing field and signal-to-noise ratio. This paper introduces an excitation and measurement strategy based on zero voltage switching (ZVS) circuit and phase sensitive detector (PSD), aiming to provide a high-efficient solution for EMT data acquisition system. The performance of ZVS circuit and PSD have been evaluated with numerical simulations and experiments, and compared with the conventional circuits based on the power amplifier. It has been indicated that, the employment of ZVS circuit has significantly increased the excitation voltage across the load and thus the current. In addition, the experimental results have confirmed the feasibility of the proposed excitation measurement scheme presented in this paper.

Depression is a common chronic mental disorder characterized by high prevalence, recurrence, suicide rate, disability rate and heavy disease burden. Depression assessment based on questionnaires is subjective, therefore, a novel framework to is hereby designed to detect depression automatically and obj ectively. The framework first utilizes a two-way autoencoder to extract the hidden features from the original differential entropy features. The new features are used to generate the channel connectivity graph, using the multi-head attention mechanism. Next, the new features and graphs are input into the graph convolutional network (GCN) to aggregate spatial information. Finally, the output from GCN is passed to a fully connected layer and a soft layer to obtain the predicted label. Experiments are performed on Multimodal Open Dataset for Mental-disorder Analysis dataset. A final accuracy of 88.68% and a cross entropy loss of 2.4532 are obtained, when using ten-fold cross validation, outperforming other traditional machine learning methods including SVM, KNN, decision tree. © 2023 Technical Committee on control Theory, Chinese Association of Automation.

Numerical modeling of droplets injection in the secondary flow of the wet steam ejector in the refrigeration cycle

Steam ejector plays a key role in the refrigeration system. The water has been used as a working fluid because water is more economical and non-toxic. The operating fluid often enters the evaporator as a water liquid and droplets evaporate by absorbing heat. Cooling load changing causes the vapor in the outlet of the evaporator to be accompanied by droplets. Therefore, there are droplets at the inlet of secondary nozzle and flow should be simulated as a wet steam flow with injection droplets at the secondary flow. In this paper, the effects of droplets injection at secondary flow have been investigated on the performance of the refrigeration cycle. For this purpose, the Eulerian-Eulerian method has been used and the results have been validated with experimental data. Six cases are considered with different wetness and number of droplets in the secondary flow. The results of case 6 show COP, T-outlet, and ER decrease about 22.93%, 15.66%, and 22.93%, respectively. In addition, the steam accompanies by droplets at the outlet of ejector. Therefore, it is essential for designers and operators to model and consider the effects of the droplets on the wall erosion to optimize the wet steam ejector and refrigeration cycle performance.
