Switched Reluctance Motors (SRMs) are cost-effective electric actuators that utilize magnetic reluctance to generate torque, with torque ripple arising from unaccounted manufacturing defects in the rotor tooth geometry. This paper aims to design a versatile, resource-efficient commutation function for accurate control of a range of SRMs, mitigating torque ripple despite manufacturing variations across SRMs and individual rotor teeth. The developed commutation function optimally distributes current between coils by leveraging the variance in the torque-current-angle model and is designed with few parameters for easy integration on affordable hardware. Monte Carlo simulations and experimental results show a tracking error reduction of up to 31% and 11%, respectively. The developed approach is beneficial for applications using a single driver for multiple systems and those constrained by memory or modeling effort, providing an economical solution for improved tracking performance and reduced acoustic noise.

Induction motors consume huge amount of energy, so their energy efficiency is an important topic. The efficiency determination methods of direct-on-line motors are mature and during the last decade efforts have been made to create a standardized way to also determine efficiency of converter-fed motors. Here the efficiency determination methods given in IEC 60034-2-3 are utilized using a modern induction motor with the rated power of 7.5 kW and compared with the sinusoidal supply results. In addition, the high frequency harmonic power is extracted from the measured active power and its behavior as a function of the frequency and torque is illustrated. © 2024 IEEE.

Estimation of Dynamic Gaussian Processes

Gaussian processes provide a compact representation for modeling and estimating an unknown function, that can be updated as new measurements of the function are obtained. This paper extends this powerful framework to the case where the unknown function dynamically changes over time. Specifically, we assume that the function evolves according to an integro-difference equation and that the measurements are obtained locally in a spatial sense. In this setting, we will provide the expressions for the conditional mean and covariance of the process given the measurements, which results in a generalized estimation framework, for which we coined the term Dynamic Gaussian Process (DGP) estimation. This new framework generalizes both Gaussian process regression and Kalman filtering. For a broad class of kernels, described by a set of basis functions, fast implementations are provided. We illustrate the results on a numerical example, demonstrating that the method can accurately estimate an evolving continuous function, even in the presence of noisy measurements and disturbances. © 2023, CC BY-NC-ND.

Bayesian estimation can be used to estimate the state of dynamical systems, but its applicability is hampered due to the curse of dimensionality. This paper aims to mitigate this bottleneck for a relevant class of systems consisting of a linear plant with bounded input, driven by stochastic disturbances with non-linear noisy output; the distributions of the disturbances and noise have a bounded support but are otherwise general. Using a frequency-domain interpretation of the operations of the Bayes' filter, we show that, under mild assumptions, exact Bayesian estimation can be pursued in a countable space of Fourier series coefficients, rather than in the usual functional space of probability densities. This fact leads to a natural approximate method, where the Fourier series coefficients corresponding to high frequencies are discarded. For this approximate method, the complexity of the conditioned state distribution, measured by the number of Fourier coefficients, remains constant at prediction steps and grows only linearly at each update step. The applicability of the results is illustrated in the context of electron microscopy, where a residual error analysis indicates that the approximation is accurate.

Sensor network localization (SNL) is a challenging problem due to its inherent non-convexity and the effects of noise in inter-node ranging measurements and anchor node position. We formulate a non-convex SNL problem as a multiplayer non-convex potential game and investigate the existence and uniqueness of a Nash equilibrium (NE) in both the ideal setting without measurement noise and the practical setting with measurement noise. We first show that the NE exists and is unique in the noiseless case, and corresponds to the precise network localization. Then, we study the SNL for the case with errors affecting the anchor node position and the inter-node distance measurements. Specifically, we establish that in case these errors are sufficiently small, the NE exists and is unique. It is shown that the NE is an approximate solution to the SNL problem, and that the position errors can be quantified accordingly. Based on these findings, we apply the results to case studies involving only inter-node distance measurement errors and only anchor position information inaccuracies. © 2024 IEEE.

Cyber-physical systems, such as unmanned aerial vehicles and connected and autonomous vehicles, are vulnerable to cyber attacks, which can cause significant damage to society. This paper examines the attack issue in cyber-physical systems within the framework of discrete event systems. Specifically, we consider a scenario where a malicious intruder injects a jamming signal into an actuator channel. It disrupts the transmission of control commands and prevents an actuator from receiving them. This is termed an actuator jamming attack. In the paper, we first analyze the closed-loop system behavior under such an attack. An attack structure is constructed to illustrate how an intruder exploits a jamming attack to drive a system into unsafe states. Then, we study the supervisory control problem for a system exposed to such an attack. The problem is reduced to a basic supervisory control one in discrete event systems by introducing the concept of dynamically controllable language. A solution to this problem is explored, where we establish an existence condition for a supremal and robust supervisor that is capable of defending against actuator jamming attacks, and design an algorithm to derive it. Finally, the effectiveness of our method is illustrated by an intelligent automated guided vehicle system. IEEE

control applications are increasingly sampled non-equidistantly in time, including in motion control, networked control, resource-aware control, and event-triggered control. Some of these applications use measurement devices that sample equidistantly in the amplitude domain. The aim of this paper is to develop a non-parametric estimator of the impulse response of continuous-time systems based on such sampling strategy, known as Lebesgue-sampling. To this end, kernel methods are developed to formulate an algorithm that adequately takes into account the output intersample behavior, which ultimately leads to more accurate models and more efficient output sampling compared to the standard approach. Bangladesh, as a developing nation, faces persistent challenges in satisfying its energy demands, primarily due to its limited natural resource reserves, particularly natural gas. Natural gas is considered a crucial factor in the country's socioeconomic development and serves as the main driving force for its industries and power plants. Nevertheless, its unregulated and extensive utilization poses a threat to the sustainability of all sectors, making it imperative to reduce its consumption. This study focuses on decreasing the consumption of natural gas in the domestic sector by advocating the adoption of induction cooking. In this context, the electrical energy needed for cooking will be derived from the readily accessible rooftop and floating photovoltaic (PV) installations within a particular community. This approach not only satisfies the community's electrical energy requirements but also contributes to mitigating the country's energy crisis to a certain extent. © 2023 IEEE.

In variational quantum algorithms (VQAs), the most common objective is to find the minimum energy eigenstate of a given energy Hamiltonian. In this paper, we consider the general problem of finding a sufficient control Hamiltonian structure that, under a given feedback control law, ensures convergence to the minimum energy eigenstate of a given energy function. By including quantum non-demolition (QND) measurements in the loop, convergence to a pure state can be ensured from an arbitrary mixed initial state. Based on existing results on strict control Lyapunov functions, we formulate a semidefinite optimization problem, whose solution defines a non-unique control Hamiltonian, which is sufficient to ensure almost sure convergence to the minimum energy eigenstate under the given feedback law and the action of QND measurements. A numerical example is provided to showcase the proposed methodology.
