Endovascular repair is a minimal invasive alternative to open surgical therapy. From a long term perspective, complications such as prostheses displacement or leaks inside the aneurysm sac (endoleaks) could appear influencing the evolution of treatment. The objective of this work is to develop a Computer-Aided Diagnosis system (CAD) for an automated classification of EndoVascular Aneurysm Repair (EVAR) progression from Computed Tomography Angiography (CTA) images. The CAD system is based on the extraction of texture features from segmented thrombus aneurysm samples and a posterior classification. Image segmentation is produced by an interactive Active Learning procedure based on Random Forest (RF) classification. An initial set of labeled points are required to start training an RF. The human operator is presented with the most uncertain unlabeled voxels to select some of them for inclusion in the training set, retraining the RF classifier. Three texture-analysis methods such as the gray level co-occurrence matrix (GLCM), the gray level run length matrix (GLRLM), and the gray level difference method (GLDM), were applied to each ROI to obtain texture features. Classification of the ROI is carried out by an ensemble of SVM classifiers (ECs). The final decision is based on the application of a voting scheme across the outputs of the individual SVMs. The performance of the classifier was evaluated using 10-fold cross validation and the average of accuracy (93.84% ± 0.29), sensitivity (94.72 ± 0.23), and specificity (91.48 ± 0.35) results. © Springer International Publishing Switzerland 2014.

In this paper, we investigate fundamental limits for physical implementations of the Kalman-Bucy filter for state estimation of a class of linear port-Hamiltonian systems. In particular, for the studied class of systems we show the Kalman-Bucy filter itself is a port-Hamiltonian systems and by invoking the second law of thermodynamics, we can characterize the external power supply needed to generate an optimal state estimate. We also show how the required external power supply can be decreased by allowing the filter to perturb the measured system to a larger extent. Hence, it is possible to decrease the so-called back action of the filter by spending more energy. We illustrate our results using passive electric circuits. © 2014 IEEE.

In mobile cloud computing (MCC) systems, the resource in both the cloud and the mobile network should be carefully managed. Cloud resource management and radio resource management have traditionally been addressed separately in previous works. In this paper, we propose to jointly study dynamic cloud and radio resource management so as to improve end-to-end performance of adaptive video transmissions in MCC systems. Video application quality of service performance, distortion, is adopted as the performance measure. An important video application layer parameter, intra-refreshing rate, is optimized to improve the video distortion performance. We formulate the problem as a stochastic restless bandits optimization problem, which facilitates the distributed MCC architecture and simplifies the computation and implementation due to its "indexibility" property. Simulation results are presented to show the effectivenes of the proposed scheme.

We determine the maximum amount of work extractable in finite time by a demon performing continuous measurements on a quadratic Hamiltonian system subjected to thermal fluctuations, in terms of the information extracted from the system. The maximum work demon is found to apply a high-gain continuous feedback involving a Kalman-Bucy estimate of the system state and operates in nonequilibrium. A simple and concrete electrical implementation of the feedback protocol is proposed, which allows for analytic expressions of the flows of energy, entropy, and information inside the demon. This let us show that any implementation of the demon must necessarily include an external power source, which we prove both from classical thermodynamics arguments and from a version of Landauer's memory erasure argument extended to nonequilibrium linear systems.

This is a milestone paper of the Coordinating Committee on Manufacturing and Logistics systems (CC5) of the International Federation of Automatic control (IFAC). Classical applications of control engineering and information and communication technology (ICT) in production and logistics are often done in a rigid, centralized and hierarchical way. These inflexible approaches are typically not able to cope with the complexities of the manufacturing environment, such as the instabilities, uncertainties and abrupt changes caused by internal and external disturbances, or a large number and variety of interacting, interdependent elements. A paradigm shift, e.g., novel organizing principles and methods, is needed for supporting the interoperability of dynamic alliances of agile and networked systems. Several solution proposals argue that the future of manufacturing and logistics lies in network-like, dynamic, open and reconfigurable systems of cooperative autonomous entities. The paper overviews various distributed approaches and technologies of control engineering and ICT that can support the realization of cooperative structures from the resource level to the level of networked enterprises. Standard results as well as recent advances from control theory, through cooperative game theory, distributed machine learning to holonic systems, cooperative enterprise modelling, system integration, and autonomous logistics processes are surveyed. A special emphasis is put on the theoretical developments and industrial applications of Robustly Feasible Model Predictive control (RFMPC). Two case studies are also discussed: i) a holonic, PROSA-based approach to generate short-term forecasts for an additive manufacturing system by means of a delegate multi-agent system (D-MAS); and ii) an application of distributed RFMPC to a drinking water distribution system.

In order to enable the Web data to be applied in a non-Internet environment, overcoming the timeliness of Web data, this study proposes a domain Web data standardization organization method. The domain Web standardization organization framework is established and the acquired data are divided into three categories: Structured, un-structured and semi-structured. With respect to the semi-structured data within an implicit scheme, we use a rational code design to transform semi-structured data into structured data. Combining file system and relational database, a standardization organization method is established for the three types of data. Experimental results show that this method is effective and efficient. ©2013 Asian Network for Scientific Information.

In Cognitive Radio(CR)networks,there is a common assumption that secondary devices always obey commands and are under full ***,this assumption may become unrealistic for future CR networks with more intelligent,sophisticated and autonomous *** spectrum sensing and illegal behaviour of secondary users can result in harmful interference to primary *** this paper,we propose a novel concept of Proactive-Optimization CR(POCR)networks,in which highly intelligent secondary users always try to proactively consider potentially harmful interference when making their behaviour ***,we propose an optimal transmission behaviour decision scheme for secondary users in POCR networks considering the possible harmful interference and penalties from primary ***,we formulate the system as a Partially-Observable Markov Decision Process(POMDP)*** this formulation,a low-complexity dynamic programming framework is presented to obtain the optimal behaviour *** simulation results are presented to illustrate the significant performance improvement of the proposed scheme compared with the existing one that ignores the proactive-optimization of secondary users.

OFDM is promising for underwater acoustic (UWA) communications due to its potential to combat the large delay spread. However, the performance of the OFDM system is seriously deteriorated by the inter-carrier interference (ICI) caused by the transmitter/receiver motion and ocean waves. In this paper, we propose a novel ICI countermeasure. The key idea is to inactivate partial subcarriers according to index modulation and meanwhile transmit signals with opposite polarity on two adjacent active subcarriers for ICI self cancellation. Simulation results validate that the proposed scheme achieves much better bit error rate (BER) performance than many existing schemes in UWA communications.
