Solving the collective-risk social dilemma with risky assets in well-mixed and structured populations

In the collective-risk social dilemma, players lose their personal endowments if contributions to the common pool are too small. This fact alone, however, does not always deter selfish individuals from defecting. The temptations to free ride on the prosocial efforts of others are strong because we are hardwired to maximize our own fitness regardless of the consequences which might have for the public good. Here we show that the addition of risky assets to the personal endowments, both of which are lost if the collective target is not reached, can contribute to solving the collective-risk social dilemma. In infinite well-mixed populations, risky assets introduce new stable and unstable mixed steady states, whereby the stable mixed steady state converges to full cooperation as either the risk of collective failure or the amount of risky assets increases. Similarly, in finite well-mixed populations, the introduction of risky assets enforces configurations where cooperative behavior thrives. In structured populations cooperation is promoted as well, but the distribution of assets among the groups is crucial. Surprisingly, we find that the completely rational allocation of assets only to the most successful groups is not optimal, and this regardless of whether the risk of collective failure is high or low. Instead, in low-risk situations bounded rational allocation of assets works best, while in high-risk situations the simplest uniform distribution of assets among all the groups is optimal. These results indicate that prosocial behavior depends sensitively on the potential losses individuals are likely to endure if they fail to cooperate.

In this paper, a new design method of data-driven control systems is proposed, this scheme enables us to reduce the computational cost. According to the DD method, some local models are automatically generated by using imput/output data pairs of the control object stored in the plural databases. Especially, it is well known that the DD method works suitably on nonlinear systems. Therefore, even if the nonlinearities are contained in the controlled object, accuracy identification can be performed by the proposed method. Concretely, the nonlinear system to be controlled is divided into plural subsystems, and plural databases are first constructed corresponding to the subsystems. The effectiveness of the proposed control scheme is shown by simulation example. © 2013 The Institute of Electrical Engineers of Japan.

It is common that an efficient constrained plant operation under full range of disturbance inputs require meeting different sets of control objectives. This calls for application of model predictive controllers each of them being best fit into specific operating conditions. It further requires that not only designing robustly feasible model predictive controllers is needed to satisfy the real plant state/output constraints, but also a switching mechanism between these controllers during the operation is inevitable. A simple hard switching may introduce unwanted transients and more importantly may not achieve robustly feasible controller operation. In this paper, the soft switching method for nonlinear systems that allows switching between robustly feasible model predictive controllers is presented. The algorithm for the fast switching method is also addressed for the switching mechanism parameter design that minimizes that switching time duration. The method is illustrated by the application to hydraulic optimizing control in the Drinking Water Distribution systems example. © IFAC.

Network Coding-Aware Cooperative Relaying for Downlink Cellular Relay Networks

In this paper, we first overview some traditional relaying technologies, and then present a Network Coding-Aware Cooperative Relaying （NC2R） scheme to improve the performance of downlink transmission for relayaided cellular networks. Moreover, systematic performance analysis and extensive simulations are performed for the proposed NC2R and traditional relaying and non-relaying schemes. The results show that NCR outperforms conventional relaying and non-relaying schemes in terms of blocking probability and spectral efficiency, especially for cell-edge users. Additionally, the location selections for relays with NCR are also discussed. These results will provide some insights for incorporating network coding into next-generation broadband cellular relay mobile systems.

To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.

A Survey on Energy Efficiency in Cellular Networks

With the continuous increase of user requirement, the Information and Communication technology (ICT) has developed rapidly. As a result, both capacity and coverage performances have been improved, and at the same time, the communication networks have been more energy-intensive. In order to improve the energy efficiency of cellular networks, the green communication must be realized in the future networks. In this article, we present a short survey on energy-efficient technology of cellular networks. Moreover, we classify them into three categories based on theirapplication scenarios: energy-efficient architectures, energy-efficient resource management and energy-efficient radio technologies. For the first scenario, the applications of relay, Coordinated Multiple Points (CoMP) and heterogeneous network are discussed in detail. For the second scenario, the switching off scheme will be introduced as an emphasis of this part. And for the third scenario, the Multiple-Input Multiple-Output (MIMO) and Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) will be introduced as the representatives of the Energy-Efficient Radio Technologies. Finally, based on the technologies introduced above, a prospect forecast of the energy-efficient wireless cellular network is presented.

In this paper, a new estimation model based on least squares support vector machine (LS-SVM) is proposed to build up the relationship between Surface electromyogram (sEMG) signal and joint angle of the lower limb. The input of the model is 2 channels of preprocessed sEMG signal. The outputs of the model are joint angles of the hip and the knee. sEMG signal is acquired from 7 motion muscles in treadmill exercise. And two channels of them are selected for dynamic angle estimation for their strong correlation with angle data. Angle estimation model is constructed by 2 independent LS-SVM based regression model with radial basis function (RBF). It is trained using part of the sample sets acquired in 10s exercise duration and test by all data. Experimental result shows proposed method has good performance on joint angles estimation based sEMG. Root mean square error (RMSE) of prediction knee and hip joint angles is 3.02° and 2.09° respectively. It provide new human-machine interface for active rehabilitation training of SCI, stroke or neurological injury patients. © Springer-Verlag 2013.

The Critical Infrastructure systems (CISs) have received in recent years a consid- erable attention due to their heavy impact on sustainable development of modern societies. Most CISs may be classified as large scale complex systems of network structure, inuenced by strong interactions form the surrounding environment, internal and external interconnections. The later is a result of inter-CIS dependencies. The control, monitoring and control of these system is crucial to guaranty safe access to the resources distributed by the means of CIS. Among those systems the Drinking Water Distribution System (DWDS) may be found { a nonlinear dynamic carrier-load networked system. To handle these systems in a proper (robustly feasible) manner one needs to consider a nontrivial control task complimented by a set of input and state constraints. This surely points to model predictive optimal control schemes. To carry on the control a set of actuators { disinfectant booster stations { needs to be allocated within the DWDS to enable the control system to be robustly feasible. The task of optimised allocation has been addressed within this paper based on old (linear) and new (nonlinear) quality models in order to determine the impact of model structure and thus precision on the allocation results. The allocation task is formulated as a multiobjective, nonlinear/linear mixed-integer optimisation problem to be solved by a genetic algorithm (implementation of NSGA-II) due to nature of the problem. The newly obtained numerical examples are to illustrate the results. For this purpose a Chojnice (city in northern Poland) DWDS case study plant was utilised. © IFAC.

Sustainable operation of Critical Infrastructure systems (CISs) is of a major concern to modern societies. Monitoring, control and security of such systems plays a key role in guaranteeing continuous, reliable and above all secure access to the resources provided by these systems. Development of adequate software and hardware structures, as well as algorithms to perform such functions cannot be done apart from the operational conditions of the plant. On the other hand the dependencies between the resources provided by the CIS and the societies, prevents from experiments. Also this approach could be found costly and hard to justify in the world driven by hard economics. This, once again calls for the simulation tools to be exploited. Due to the vast complexity of these systems including spatial distribution over a wide area, a control engineering based multiagent framework is often utilised to cope with the issues of monitoring, control and security of CIS. Since there is no off the shelve solution for the development of such systems a novel, interesting, approach is proposed within this work to cope with the CIS simulation environment. The environment is based on the JADE and Matlab. A simple, but computational demanding example is provided, presenting the abilities and performance of the Research Platform. The simulation example is presented in the context of the new complex water quality model. © IFAC.

In this paper an extension of on-line model simplification technique for a class of networked systems, namely reactive carrier-load nonlinear dynamic networked system (RCLNDNS), kept within point-parametric model (PPM) framework is addressed. The PPM is utilised to acquire a piece wise constant time-varying parameter linear structure for the RCLNDNS suitable for the on-line one step ahead prediction that may be applied to monitoring and model predictive control purposes. The advantageous structure of PPM offers a considerable simplification of those algorithms in terms of computational burden in comparison to the nonlinear structures. Moreover, the availability of technical tools makes the analysis of the final form algorithms straightforward. An application to water quality estimation/prediction in drinking water distribution system illustrates the technology. © IFAC.
