Due to the necessity of developing analysis tools in the integrated ICT and power system domain, this paper describes and compares the architecture and configuration of two different ITC-power system co-simulation approaches called SITL (System in the Loop) and HLA (High Level Architecture) Co-simulation platforms. Both platforms make use of the communication network simulator OPNET (Optimum Network Performance). As indicated by the names, the former operates in real time, in order to perform SITL simulations, whilst the latter is based on the HLA interface between OPNET and the power network simulation environment EMTP-rv (Electromagnetic Transient Program). We provide several details on their implementation and present their features by means of the results obtained for two test cases. The paper aims at clarifying the type of analysis that can be effectively carried out by using the two different platforms.

The fabrication of diamond-like carbon (DLC) micro-gear by room temperature curing nanoimprint lithography (RTC-NIL) using glass-like carbon (GC) molds as applications to the DLC-based medical MEMS (Micro electronic Mechanical systems) was investigated. The DLC film which has excellent properties similar to chemical vapor deposited (CVD) diamond films was used as the patterning material. We propose GC as mold material because GC has higher etching selectivity than a diamond film. The etching selectivity of polysiloxane film against a GC substrate is about 5 times as high as that of a diamond film. Therefore we fabricated the GC molds that have micro-gear patterns with 30 μm-tip diameter and 500 nm-tooth thickness. We carried out the RTC-NIL process using the GC micro-gear molds under the following optimum conditions. 1 min-time from spin-coating to imprint: t1, 0.5 MPa-imprinting pressure: P and 5 min-holding time: t2, and then the imprinted polysiloxane pattern on DLC film was processed with an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) oxygen ion shower. However, we were not able to fabricate micro-gear patterns in high accuracy because of a remaining residual layer on the DLC film. Therefore we propose the removing process for the residual layer with trifluoromethane (CHF3) ion shower under the optimum conditions of 300 eV-ion energy and 4 min-etching time. As a result, we succeeded to fabricate concave DLC-based micro-gear patterns in high accuracy which has 30 μm-tip diameter and 1 μm-depth. © 2013 Materials Research Society.

The microfabrication technologies for organic light-emitting devices (OLEDs) are essential to the fabrication of the next generation of light-emitting devices. The micro-OLEDs fabricated by room-temperature curing nanoimprint lithography (RTC-NIL) using diamond molds have been investigated. However, light emissions from 10 μm-square-dot OLEDs fabricated by the RTC-NIL method have not been uniform. Therefore, we proposed the fabrication of micro-OLEDs by room-temperature curing nanocontact-print lithography (RTC-NCL) using the diamond-like carbon (DLC) mold. The DLC molds used in RTC-NCL were fabricated by an electron cyclotron resonance (ECR) oxygen ion shower with polysiloxane oxide mask in electron beam (EB) lithography technology. The mold patterns are square and rectangle dots which has 10 μm-width, 10 μm-width and 50 μm-length, respectively. The height of the patterns is 500 nm. The DLC molds were used to form the insulating layer of polysiloxane in RTC-NCL. We carried out the RTC-NCL process using the DLC mold under the following optimum conditions: 0.1 MPa-pressure for coating DLC mold with polysiloxane film, 2.1 MPa-pressure for transferring polysiloxane from DLC mold pattern to indium tin oxide (ITO) glass substrate. We deposited N,N′-Diphenyl -N,N′-di (m-tolyl)benzidine (TPD) [40 nm-thickness] as hole transport layer / Tris(8-quinolinolato)aluminum (Alq3) [40 nm-thickness] as electron transport layer / A1 [200 nm-thickness] as cathode on ITO glass substrate as anode in this order. We succeeded in formation of the insulating layer with square and rectangle dots which has 10 μm-width, 10 μm-width and 50 μm-length, and operation of micro-OLEDs by RTC-NIL using DLC molds. © 2012 Materials Research Society.

Robust parameter estimation and output prediction for reactive carrier-load nonlinear dynamic networks

In this paper an extension of on-line model simplification technique for a class of networked systems, namely reactive carrier-load nonlinear dynamic networked system (RCLNDNS), kept within point-parametric model (PPM) framework is addressed. The PPM is utilised to acquire a piece wise constant time-varying parameter linear structure for the RCLNDNS suitable for the on-line one step ahead prediction that may be applied to monitoring and model predictive control purposes. The advantageous structure of PPM offers a considerable simplification of those algorithms in terms of computational burden in comparison to the nonlinear structures. Moreover, the availability of technical tools makes the analysis of the final form algorithms straightforward. An application to water quality estimation/prediction in drinking water distribution system illustrates the technology.

Efficient control of Networked control System (NCS) is a challenge, as the control methods need to deal with non-deterministic variable delays and data loss. This paper presents a novel hybrid approach to NCS where Model Predictive control (MPC) is applied as a main controller and implicit switching MPC is used for data transmission control in event-driven shared communication medium, leading to complex control system with active data transmission mechanisms.

The Critical Infrastructure systems (CISs) have received in recent years a considerable attention due to their heavy impact on sustainable development of modern societies. Most CISs may be classified as large scale complex systems of network structure, influenced by strong interactions form the surrounding environment, internal and external interconnections. The later is a result of inter-CIS dependencies. The control, monitoring and control of these system is crucial to guaranty safe access to the resources distributed by the means of CIS. Among those systems the Drinking Water Distribution System (DWDS) may be found – a nonlinear dynamic carrier-load networked system. To handle these systems in a proper (robustly feasible) manner one needs to consider a nontrivial control task complimented by a set of input and state constraints. This surely points to model predictive optimal control schemes. To carry on the control a set of actuators – disinfectant booster stations – needs to be allocated within the DWDS to enable the control system to be robustly feasible. The task of optimised allocation has been addressed within this paper based on old (linear) and new (nonlinear) quality models in order to determine the impact of model structure and thus precision on the allocation results. The allocation task is formulated as a multiobjective, nonlinear/linear mixed-integer optimisation problem to be solved by a genetic algorithm (implementation of NSGA-II) due to nature of the problem. The newly obtained numerical examples are to illustrate the results. For this purpose a Chojnice (city in northern Poland) DWDS case study plant was utilised.

Research Platform for Monitoring, control and Security of Critical Infrastructure systems

Sustainable operation of Critical Infrastructure systems (CISs) is of a major concern to modern societies. Monitoring, control and security of such systems plays a key role in guaranteeing continuous, reliable and above all secure access to the resources provided by these systems. Development of adequate software and hardware structures, as well as algorithms to perform such functions cannot be done apart from the operational conditions of the plant. On the other hand the dependencies between the resources provided by the CIS and the societies, prevents from experiments. Also this approach could be found costly and hard to justify in the world driven by hard economics. This, once again calls for the simulation tools to be exploited. Due to the vast complexity of these systems including spatial distribution over a wide area, a control engineering based multiagent framework is often utilised to cope with the issues of monitoring, control and security of CIS. Since there is no off the shelve solution for the development of such systems a novel, interesting, approach is proposed within this work to cope with the CIS simulation environment. The environment is based on the JADE and Matlab. A simple, but computational demanding example is provided, presenting the abilities and performance of the Research Platform. The simulation example is presented in the context of the new complex water quality model.

The paper develops a novel open loop set bounded observer for robust estimation of water quality in DWDS based on the advanced nonlinear quality dynamics model including disinfections by-products (DBPs). The observer utilises a cooperativeness of the quality dynamics model and is computationally efficient, hence applicable to on-line quality monitoring. The simulation results illustrate its good and sustainable performance.
