This paper presents a challenging industrial benchmark for implementation of control strategies under realistic working conditions. The developed control strategies should perform in a plug & play manner, i.e. adapt to varying working conditions, optimize their performance, and provide fault tolerance. A fault tolerant strategy is needed to deal with a faulty sensor measurement of the evaporation pressure. The design and algorithmic challenges in the control of an evaporator include: unknown model parameters, large parameter variations, varying loads, and external discrete phenomena such as compressor switch on/off or abrupt change in compressor speed.

PID control schemes have been widely used in most process controlsystems. However, most process systems are nonlinear, it is difficult to obtain good control performances using simple controllers with the fixed PID parameters. This paper describes a design scheme of nonlinear controllers with a local linear models structure. The linear model is designed using the data-driven(DD) approach. The DD approach is effective in describing the nonlinear components. In addition, it is easy to construct the local linear models, if the system model can be suitably designed. According to the proposed control system, the desired control performance can be obtained for nonlinear systems.

We formulate a robust feasibility problem for the design of a reference governor to provide setpoints for the lower-level control in a two-layer hierarchical system. Using linear programming duality, solutions to the robust feasibility problem (i.e. both necessary and sufficient conditions for the existence of an admissible reference) are given. Three cases are considered: 1) Fixed reference;2) feedforward management;and 3) affine feedback management. The computationally efficient results can be implemented in supervisory control in SCADA networks.

This paper presents a channel estimation (CE) method for transmit diversity systems based on time-domain synchronous orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (TDS-OFDM) scheme. Compared with conventional methods, the proposed CE method doesn't need the hypothesis that the channel responses over two consecutive signal frames or over two adjacent subcarriers are equal. Thus, it can greatly improve the system performance, especially over doubly selective fading channels. We theoretically calculate the minimum square error (MSE) lower bound and derive the design criterion for optimal training sequences. Based on these results, an optimal training sequence for multiple antenna applications is proposed. Simulation results confirm that an obvious gain in the signal-to-noise-ratio (SNR) can be obtained using the proposed method.

A problem of optimised robust placement of the hard quality sensors in Drinking Water Distribution systems under several water demand scenarios for robust quality monitoring is formulated. Numerical algorithms to solve the problem are derived. The optimality is meant as achieving at the same time a desired trade off between the sensor capital and maintenance costs and resulting robust estimation accuracy of the monitoring algorithm for several water demand scenarios insuring robustness with respect to the demand uncertainty. The robust estimation algorithm recently developed by the authors is applied as a soft quality in design of the sensor placement algorithms. The method and algorithm are validated by application to Chojnice DWDS case study.

This paper considers the distributed consensus problem of multi-agent systems with general continuous-time linear time-invariant dynamics. Based on the relative output information of neighboring agents, two distributed adaptive dynamic consensus protocols are proposed, namely, the edge-based adaptive protocol which assigns a time-varying coupling weight to each edge in the communication graph and the node-based adaptive protocol which uses a time-varying coupling weight for each node. These two adaptive protocols are designed to ensure that consensus is reached in a fully distributed fashion for any undirected connected communication graphs without using any global information. A sufficient condition for the existence of these adaptive protocols is that each agent is stabilizable and detectable. The case with switching communication graphs is also studied.
