This paper investigates the nonlinear dynamics of network-based dynamical systems where network communication channels of finite data rates are inserted into the closed loops of the controlsystems. The authors analyze the bifurcation and chaotic behavior of the non-smooth dynamical systems. The authors first prove that for almost all system parameters there are no periodic orbits. This result distinguishes this type of non-smooth dynamical systems from many others exhibiting border-collision bifurcations. Next, the authors show analytically that the chaotic sets are separated from the region containing the line segment of all fixed points with a finite distance. Finally, the authors employ a simple model to highlight that both the number of clients sharing a common network channel and fluctuations in the available network bandwidth have significant influence on the performance of such dynamical systems.

From the year of 1949 to the present, the China national coal output has been increasing quickly and became first in the world in 2009. But at the same time, major coal mining accidents still exist nowadays. In order to review the overall situation and provide information on major accidents of coal mines in China, we investigated 26 major coal mining accidents in China between the years of 1949 and 2009 through statistical methods, each of which led to more than 100 fatalities. Statistical characteristics about accident-related factors such as time, death toll, accident reasons, characters and nature of enterprise were analyzed. And some special conclusions have been achieved. For example, although we have made great progress, the safety situation in China coal mining industry is still serious, and the reasons for the mining accidents are all human errors which are not inevitable. Such results may be helpful to prevent major accidents in coal mines. Moreso, based on both the knowledge of other countries which have good safety situation nowadays and the safety management situation of China, we made suggestion on safety management of China coal mining. In conclusion, countermeasures were proposed in accordance with the results of statistical studies and the analyses of problems existed in coal mines, including the perfec- tion of safety supervision organization, the establishment of cooperating agency among government, coal mines and workers, the perfection of safety rules and regulations, the improvement of safety investment, the enhancement of safety training, the development of safety technique, and the development of emer- gency rescue technique and equipment.

Abstract As the complexity of power networks increases, the installation of devices such as High Voltage Direct Current links (HVDC) and Flexible AC Transmission systems (FACTS), and the use of advanced control techniques, can be used to improve network stability. Model Predictive control (MPC) is an example of such an advanced control technique. However, it is often impractical to implement this technique in a centralised manner, as often the problem can be too computationally complex or several independent controllers may be responsible for different subsystems. Distributed approaches use communication between a number of controllers to approximate control of a centralised system. In this paper it is proposed to use distributed MPC for controlling a multiple link HVDC system using local communications only.

When an elastohydrodynamically lubricated conjunction is subjected to pure impact, two types of oil entrapments can be generated;one is the central dimple and the other is the peripheral dimple. This article presents some numerical analyses to simulate laboratory experiments and study the influence of input parameters on the two types of oil entrapments. It has been found that the film profile (oil entrapment) in the central contact region is mainly determined by the loading speed at the initial stage but the film profile in the peripheral region is determined by the late stage of the loading. The central dimple shifts to the peripheral dimple as the loading speed increases. The amount of oil entrapped in the elastohydrodynamic lubrication conjunction increases as the loading speed and the maximum load increase. The results also indicated that a critical viscosity exists in the formation of the oil entrapment. The film thickness obtained by numerical simulations was well correlated with the experimental results.
