The ultrasonic motor (USM) possesses heavy nonlinearities which vary with driving conditions and load-dependent characteristics such as the dead-zone. In this paper, an identification method for the rotary travelling-wave type ultrasonic motor (RTWUSM) with dead-zone is proposed based on a modified Hammerstein model structure. The driving voltage contributing effect on the nonlinearities of the RTWUSM was transformed to the change of dynamic parameters against the driving voltage. The dead-zone of the RTWUSM is identified based upon the above transformation. Experiment results showed good agreement be- tween the output of the proposed model and actual measured output.

Quantitative analysis and detection of abnormalities for electroencephalogram (EEG) recordings during evoked activities are essential for clinical diagnosis on neurological disorders. However, the process of interpreting EEG is time consuming and requires experienced electroencephalographers (EEGers). In this study, a method of automatic EEG interpretation during hyperventilation was proposed. The purpose is to provide a quantitative interpretation of EEG which is able to conform to EEGers' visual inspection. The final integrated results of automatic interpretation were compared with EEGers' evaluation, and showed high consistence.

An active security system assures that interacting robots don't collide or that a robot operating independently doesn't hit any obstacle that is encountered in the robots workspace. In this paper, an active security system for a FANUC industrial robot is introduced. The active security problem where one robot needs to avoid a moving obstacle in its workspace is considered. An obstacle detection and localization mechanism based on stereoscopic vision methods was successfully developed. To connect the vision system, an operator's pc and the robot environment a real-time communication is set up over Ethernet using socket messaging. We used fuzzy logic for intelligent trajectory planning. A multitask oriented robot application in the KAREL programming language of FANUC Robotics was implemented and tested.

Generally speaking, hearing-impaired students only accept limited language training classes in the school. They do not have complementary learning tools to practice their pronunciation correctly. Therefore, the main purpose of this study uses an embedded system to implement a portable pronunciation learning tool for hearing-impaired people to learn Chinese phoneme. This system is implementing at low cost with an easy operation, a low memory and a better speech synthesis. Hearing-impaired people can use this tool to learn Chinese phonetic without time and space constraints. As experiment to test system has processed to verify the system performance.

A new technique for spectral reflectance reconstruction based on neural network and basis vectors is proposed. The spectral reflectance of the sample surface is measured by spectrometer and the response of an RGBY digital camera is recorded. The reflectance is represented as a linear combination of several basis vectors by singular value decomposition (SVD). A neural network is trained such that it is able to approximate the relationship between the camera responses and coefficients accurately. The spectral reflectance can be reconstructed based on the neural network and basis vectors. Experimental results showed that this approach can reconstruct the reflectance of the standard samples with a relatively high accuracy. It is a parallel system with multichannel and is easy to realize with digital image capturing devices.

Data for human sleep study may be affected by internal and external influences. The recorded sleep data contains complex and stochastic factors, which increase the difficulties for the computerized sleep stage determination techniques to be applied for clinical practice. The aim of this study is to develop an automatic sleep stage determination system which is optimized for variable sleep data. The main methodology includes two modules: expert knowledge database construction and automatic sleep stage determination. Visual inspection by a qualified clinician is utilized to obtain the probability density function of parameters during the learning process of expert knowledge database construction. Parameter selection is introduced in order to make the algorithm flexible. Automatic sleep stage determination is manipulated based on conditional probability. The result showed close agreement comparing with the visual inspection by clinician. The developed system can meet the customized requirements in hospitals and institutions.
