A twelve-phase synchronous motor with four Y-connected 3-phase symmetrical windings displaced in turn by 15deg is modeled by using flux linkages as state variables, and an optimized method for the vector control is proposed with the simulation results. The observing model for magnetizing flux linkage at the direct-axis is derived whereby a vector control scheme of a twelve-phase synchronous motor, and related simulation is constructed in this paper. Using switch blocks to model the functions of twelve-phase voltage-fed inverter is convenient for simulating the driving system. The results of the simulations show that the torque and magnetizing flux linkage can be controlled separately, and the dynamic characteristics of the motor are satisfied with the operating requirements.

A pilot engine project was initiated to demonstrate the feasibility of a new method of rapid development using a small-sized engine and to provide feedback for development of an actual flight model engine. Fundamental engineering tests for critical elements of the engine were selected from both a technological standpoint and by the QFD method. The critical performance tests of the bearings showed a good operational range at the 30% throttling condition, even though the pressure around the bearings was lower than the critical pressure.

The objective of the present study is to determine if surface electromyography (EMG) signals can be used for controlling the motion of the meal assistance robot. The power of four EMG channels were calculated and encoded into five commands to track the motion of meal assistance robot. The results indicated that by using EMG signals, the meal assistance robot was able to follow the movement desire of the subjects and help them to eat. This study has shown the possibility of extracting the features of EMG signals that reflect the subject's intent as control signals.

This paper proposes a new method for the design of decentralized controllers for large scale systems. The controllers are designed in two steps. In the first step, a powerful assignment algorithm is used to pair the system's inputs and outputs and to identity clusters of strongly interacting subsystems. Then, a decomposition condition is derived which allows for the controller of each of these subsystems to be designed separately. Thus the original problem of designing the decentralized controller becomes that of solving several smaller local problems subject to the satisfaction of a local condition. Consequently each sub-controller can be designed and tuned separately, which is a useful feature in process control applications where decentralized structure is important. It is shown that both the local controller design and the satisfaction of the local decomposition condition can be combined together into a single convex optimization problem which can be solved by linear matrix inequalities.

The so called “super-exponential” methods (SEMs) are attractive methods for solving multichannel blind deconvolution problem. The conventional SEMs, however, have such a drawback that they are very sensitive to Gaussian noise. To overcome this drawback, the robust super-exponential methods (RSEMs) were proposed for single-input single-output infinite impulse response (SISO-IIR) channels and for multi-input multi-output (MIMO) static channels (instantaneous mixtures). While the conventional SEMs use the second-and higher-order cumulants of observations, the RSEMs use only the higher-order cumulants of observations. Since higher-order cumulants are insensitive to Gaussian noise, the RSEMs are robust to Gaussian noise. We proposed an RSEM extended to the case of MIMO-FIR channels (convolutive mixtures). To show the validity of the proposed RSEM, some simulation results are presented.

This article introduces novel tests which utilize a limited amount of experimental and possibly noisy data obtained from a stable closed-loop system, i.e. an interconnection of an existing known stabilizing controller and an unknown plant, to infer if the introduction of a prospective controller will stabilize the unknown plant. This extends our earlier results to include the MIMO systems.

A feedback interconnection consisting of two nonlinear systems is shown to be input-output stable when a "mixed" small gain and passivity assumption is placed on each of the systems. The "mixed" small gain and passivity property captures the well-known notions of passivity and small gain associated with systems: the property can be appropriately reduced to an input and output strictly passive system description;or alternatively can be reduced to a description of a system with small, finite gain. More importantly, the property captures a concept of "blending" of the small gain and passivity ideas. This concept of "blending" can be visualized, for example, by considering linear time-invariant systems that exhibit passive-type properties at, say low frequencies;and lose these passive-type properties but have small gain at high frequencies.

In this paper we extend a technique developed to design a feedback stabilizing control law for autonomous switched systems all modes of which are unstable. More specifically, we extend the switching table procedure to the class of affine switched systems, the dynamics of which either do not have an equilibrium point or, if they do, it is not common. This method is then applied to the DC-DC buck-boost converter. The design of the control law is based on dynamic programming and it results in a partition of the state space into switching look-up tables. A comparison with a Lyapunov based technique is also discussed.

Signal averaging method is usually utilized for extracting the characteristics of event related potentials (ERPs). However, the amplitude and duration of ERPs are not constant for each stimulus due to the fluctuation of the subject's state, accordingly the appropriate selection of available data is crucial for realizing the accurate averaging. Independent component analysis (ICA) is one of powerful tool for signal processing, and some application to analyze the neurological signal processing such as electroencephalogram (EEG), evoked potentials (EPs), ERPs and so on were done. In this study, ICA was applied to process the visual mismatch negativity (V-MMN) for extracting the features and for selecting the appropriate single trial data for averaging. From the grand average waveform of V-MMN, signal separation matrix was determined by use of ICA. Characteristic parameters for evaluating single trial data were calculated from the decomposed components of ERPs. Then, the available single trial data was selected based on the value of evaluation parameter. Waveforms of selective averaging method and conventional averaging method were compared and the effectiveness of the proposed method was examined.

This paper proposes a novel and simple approach for modeling of the inverse hysteresis. In this method, the continuous transformation technique is utilized to construct an elementary inverse hysteresis model (EIHM), which sets up a one-to-one mapping between the input space and the output space of the inverse hysteresis nonlinearity. Then the output of the EIHM is used as one of the input signals of the neural network (NN) to approximate the inverse behavior of hysteresis. Finally, the proposed method is applied to the modeling of the inverse model of hysteresis inherent in piezoelectric actuator. © 2006 IEEE.
