This paper presents a novel approach to integrating quantitative and qualitative information in fault-diagnosis. This paper investigates the development of a supervisory control scheme for a non-linear system with qualitative tasks at the upper level and a lower level comprising quantitative model based non-linear control. A new quantitative approach for the stability of non-linear fuzzy inference systems using Takagi-Sugeno (T-S) fuzzy models is presented. The necessary conditions for the assignability of eigenvalues to a region in the s-plane and the necessary conditions to guarantee the joint stability of fuzzy models for combined T-S fuzzy observers and T-S fuzzy controllers together are derived. © 1999 EUCA.

We propose a flexible learning network of a class of linear models. A nonlinear black box system is transformed into a network of known and unknown nodes (node functions), where a linear model is introduced. Unknown nodes are parameterized using neurofuzzy models. The resulting learning network is interpreted as a linear model network (LimNet) and features useful linear properties and universal approximation ability. © Fuji technology Press Ltd. Neurofuzzy Approach to Fault Detection of Nonlinear systems

This paper proposes a neurofuzzy approach to fault detection in linear systems. The system diagnosed is described by using a neurofuzzy model called LimNet that consists of a linear model and multiple local linear models with interpolation of a "fuzzy basis function". Fault detection is considered in two casesi when faults occur in the linear model part, a KDI-based robust fault detection is applied, where a multi-local-model part is treated as error due to nonlinear undermodeling;when faults occur in the multi-local-model part, a multi-model based fault detection method is developed, in which the identified LimNet is interpreted as several local ARMAX models, and KDI is used as an index to discriminate between each local model and its reference. This paper mainly concentrates discussions on multi-model based fault detection. © Fuji technology Press Ltd. A sufficient condition, in terms of quadratic stability of matrices, for the class of regular descriptor linear systems which possess no infinite relative eigenvalues is presented. Utilizing this result, the problem of stabilization of descriptor linear system via proportional-plus-derivative (PD) state feedback control is converted into two related quadratically stabilization problems, which can be easily solved using linear matrix inequality (LMI) techniques. Based on the same idea, robust stabilization via PD state feedback for uncertain descriptor linear systems, with coefficient matrices belonging to some compact sets in proper matrix spaces, has also been dealt with.

In this article, we report fabrication and characterization of the photovoltaic devices using donor polymer-acceptor polymer composites and heterojunction. Upon mixing the two polymers, quenching of photoluminescence and improvement of photovoltaic properties have been observed. These phenomena have been interpreted in terms of the photoinduced charge transfer between donor and acceptor polymers. Drastic enhancement of photovoltaic effect has been observed also in the heterojunction device consists of donor and acceptor polymers. The charge carrier transport phenomena in polymer donor-acceptor composites have been studied by characterizing the field-effect transistors with the composites, and discussed in terms of the percolation model.

This paper presents a GSM-specific assessment of the performance of a radio-on-fibre link between a remote antenna unit and GSM base station. The intermodulation distortion (IMD) has been analysed for a system using the subcarrier multiplexing (SCM). A novel technique using direct sequence spread spectrum is proposed to minimise the IMD by decreasing the signal amplitude prior to the direct modulation of the laser diode. The results show that the optical fibre microcellular system is outperforming the full wireless system.

A dynamic simulation model is a powerful and fast tool to analyze existing production situations and to optimize the performance by evaluating alternative scheduling rules. This paper presents such an analysis and optimization for a furnace and pre-clean area of a wafer fab. The design of a dynamic model is described. Furthermore, experiments are described that illustrate the influence of a minimum batch size scheduling rule. For a specific production situation, the minimum batch sizes per furnace process which optimize cycle time are determined.

Using a spectrum analyzer and synthesized signal generator, several measurements for the frequency-domain characterization of the radio channel in the 60 GHz band were performed. In the experiments, a carrier wave (CW) was swept with a constant amplitude across the 100 MHz band, centered around 59.9 GHz. The channel frequency response was measured at the receiver side. The results can be used for the design of an OFDM (orthogonal frequency division multiplex) system. The measurement environments were a corridor and a big college room in a high-rise office building (indoor) and a parking site and a grassfield at the side of that building (outdoor). The spectrum samples were taken in each of the environments. From such samples, it is possible to calculate the Rice parameter k and the path loss coefficients. It was necessary to the develop an appropriate measurement analysis, stemming from the fact that the spectrum analyzer gives no information on the phase, only amplitude. Measurement analysis method and results are explained.

This paper describes a governing equation fault detection and diagnosis algorithm, which is based on Kramer's (1987) approach and extended it to deal with multiple faults. The algorithm is specifically designed to overcome disturbances and uncertainties in the process which might result in diagnostic instability. The approach is used to detect and/or diagnose the following faults: sensor faulty status of fails-high and fails-low, sticking valve, plant leaks, and other unanticipated or novel faults. The algorithm was installed on a distributed control system of a PET plant in Dec. 1995, and continues to be used thus demonstrating the success of the fault detection and diagnosis approach.
