This study employed Structural Equation Modeling (SEM) to examine green travel behavior in three different urban areas: Beijing, Tokyo, and the Klang Valley. The analysis was based on the Theory of Planned Behavior (TPB), and it aimed to assess how three key variables (attitude, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral control) influenced green travel intentions, leading to the formulation of six hypotheses. The research findings revealed that the model was well-suited for Beijing and the Klang Valley, as indicated by several tests for structural fit. However, it was found to be less appropriate for Tokyo. In Beijing, the results suggested a strong intention among citizens to engage in green travel, implying a high willingness to use eco-friendly transportation options. In both Beijing and the Klang Valley, the three variables positively impacted green travel intentions, thus supporting the hypotheses derived from the TPB. However, the model was not as suitable for Tokyo. Moreover, the study highlighted that personal values and social pressures had limited influence across all three cities. Beijing and Klang Valley residents seemed to prioritize the ease of using green travel options, while Tokyo residents appeared to be less influenced by this factor. This could be attributed to Tokyo's highly developed rail transit system, where residents may choose green travel not solely due to their willingness but rather because of the convenience it offers.

As the end-users increasingly can provide flexibility to the power system, it is important to consider how this flexibility can be activated as a resource for the grid. Electricity network tariffs is one option that can be used to activate this flexibility. Therefore, by designing efficient grid tariffs, it might be possible to reduce the total costs in the power system by incentivizing a change in consumption patterns. This paper provides a methodology for optimal grid tariff design under decentralized decision-making and uncertainty in demand, power prices, and renewable generation. A bilevel model is formulated to adequately describe the interaction between the end-users and a distribution system operator. In addition, a centralized decision-making model is provided for benchmarking purposes. The bilevel model is reformulated as a mixed-integer linear problem solvable by branch-and-cut techniques. Results based on both deterministic and stochastic settings are presented and discussed. The findings suggest how electricity grid tariffs should be designed to provide an efficient price signal for reducing aggregate network peaks.

This research investigates the distribution network model of a fruit trading company in Thailand, with a specific focus on the problem of excessive travel distances and vehicle requirements in the company's existing distribution system. Linear programming and optimization techniques are used to improve the distribution network model and to satisfy the daily demand. Results are compared between the current distribution scenario and the optimized model. The computational analysis reveals a significant 21.8% reduction (802 kilometers) in total traveling distance and a 33.33% decrease in the number of vehicles required. Additionally, a comprehensive cost analysis is proposed, incorporating fuel costs, CO2 emissions, and overtime expenses, which were previously overlooked. This research offers valuable insights into the potential benefits of optimization, including cost savings and environmental impact reduction, providing a practical template for managing distribution networks, reducing reliance on ad hoc practices, and fostering a sustainable business model to enhance competitiveness in a challenging market. © 2023 IEEE.

While the rise of electric vehicles reflects a push for clean energy as envisioned by international agreements like the Paris Agreement, wireless charging's convenience can overcome limitations and hasten their adoption, making it a strategic step alongside regulations such Permenhub No. 15/2022 and SDG 9 “Industry, Innovation, and Infrastructure” for cleaner air and sustainable transportation. The aim is to convert the high frequency AC voltage from the coupling capacitor into a stable DC voltage. Further increase the system sensitivity to the load variations, by designing a MOSFET based active rectifier. By changing load parameters, the accuracy of PFC adaptation to the battery State of Charge (SOC) obtained is at 98% with 2% tolerance for errors. It is concluded that the research is said to be successful because it has met the parameters of general research hypothesis where the system is able to convert high frequency AC voltage into a stable DC voltage.

Crack often affects structural deformation nonlinearly, leading to difficulty detecting their existence using some Structural Health Monitoring methods. In this paper, we propose a damage index derived from the Euler-Bernoulli beam theory. Furthermore, we evaluate the method's ability to detect the crack when the specimen is subjected to an impact load. To assess the proposed damage index, we consider a beam specimen containing a lateral crack. The beam has a length of 300 mm and a square-shaped cross-sectional area of 20 mm × 20 mm. The beam is made of steel, is constrained at one end, and is subjected to an impact load at the other end. The beam lateral displacement at many observation points across the beam-free surface is recorded during the beam dynamics. The records are used to compute the proposed damage index. The results suggest that the index only detects the crack when the beam deformation is affected by the crack. When the crack face is suppressed to bear the compressive stress, the resulting deformation is not much different from that of the uncracked beam. In that condition, the proposed index is not able to indicate the existing crack. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In recent years,traffic safety researchers have attempted to separate single-vehicle and multi-vehicle crashes when analyzing crash severity,considering the significant differences in the mechanism of occurrence of the two crash ***,regardless of the number of vehicles involved in a crash,the severity of a crash is defined by the most severe injury outcome sustained by the occupants,not ***,this study evaluated a need for conducting a separate severity analysis for crashes involving a single occupant(SO)and multiple occupants(MO).Ten-year data(2009–2018)of crashes that involved a collision between a single vehicle and a train at the highway-rail grade crossings(HRGCs)across the United States was used as a case *** were grouped based on occupancy level;that is,crashes involving SO were separated from the ones involving *** expected,MO crashes had higher injury and fatality rates than SO *** Multinomial Logit(MNL)models were developed to analyze the crash severity of SO crashes,MO crashes,and total *** study found several differences in associated factors when SO crashes and MO crashes were modeled ***,combining SO and MO crashes tend to either underestimate or overestimate the actual impact of the predictor variable on a specific crash *** the variables,train speed and vehicle speed during crash showed a great *** findings provide evidence that the severity analysis of the SO and MO crashes should be performed separately as they have different characteristics.

A digital elevation model (DEM) is a topographic representation of a bare surface, usually referring to the Earth's surface. DEMs have been used for flood assessment, landside hazard detection, soil properties' quantification, road and highway planning, etc. Recently, DEMs generated using small unmanned aircraft systems (sUAS) have shown potential in transportation infrastructure inspection. In this study, we evaluated the performance of sUAS-collected DEM data to detect airfield pavement distresses. Natural-color red-green-blue (RGB) data were collected from both Portland cement concrete (PCC) and asphalt concrete (AC) pavements at three airports with UAS. The data were processed to generate an RGB optical orthophoto using close-range photogrammetry, and one product of that process was a DEM representing the airfield pavement in three-dimensional space. The resolution of the generated DEMs varied from 2.8 mm/pix to 84 mm/pix based on sUAS sensors, flying altitude, and parameters selected for RGB data processing. The DEMs were studied for their usefulness in visually identifying 14 PCC pavement distresses and nine AC pavement distresses. Analysis showed that DEM with 6 mm/pix resolution or better can be useful for detecting one or more severity levels of 13 PCC pavement distresses and 6 AC pavement distresses. High-resolution DEMs were also useful in identifying distresses related to elevation differences, such as shoving, depression, and faulting. This study illustrates the potential of DEM data in airfield pavement distress detection. © ASCE 2023. All rights reserved.

The high traffic of containers between countries and continents demands the implementation of automation at cargo seaports. Rubber Tyred Gantry Crane (RTGC) is one of the main components for loading and unloading at container yards which needs to move the container accurately to the desired position and minimize the sway during this process. This paper attempts to examine non-linear control using the sliding mode controller (SMC) method for MIMO control problems in RTGC. The control objective is to reduce the swing angle and move the container to the desired position and height by means of the force of two motors on RTGC. The detailed derivation of the nonlinear RTGC model, the design of SMC and its sliding surface are introduced in this paper. In order to optimize the performance of the SMC control action, the Particle Swarm Optimization (PSO) and Grid search methods are employed in the investigation. The obtained results demonstrate that the SMC exhibits satisfactory control performance and effectively reduces chattering across various initial conditions and system parameters.

This study demonstrates the application of design principles for tools in engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC) projects for project management purposes. It advocates the use of proper data analytics and visualization that can be implemented to support effective project progress reporting as well as performance monitoring. At first, an Entity Relationship Diagram (ERD) of the collected data was developed, and then the database was retrieved into the Microsoft Power BI for analysis and visualization. The project's relevant details were visualized and analyzed in terms of the major key performance indications that help evaluate the current situation of projects and aids in future decision making for project performance and portfolio management. A real case of a construction company has been selected and examined. Analytical results support finding the story behind the data. On the other hand, the effects point out that the use of the suitable facts analytics method coupled with the right analytics method and appropriate data visualization software would result in optimum use of information for future aspiration of project success and proper project progress reporting and performance evaluation. It will help companies to transfer from traditional data storage style to big data analytics and powerful use of enterprise business data for companies' growth and success in the field of EPC projects and the construction industries as a whole. Furthermore, it can be used for quicker and extra decisive choices aiming to keep projects on music about their security performance, scheduled time, cost, and great level. The intersection of Artificial Intelligence and Design disciplines such as Architecture, Urban Planning, engineering and Product Design has been a longstanding pursuit, with Generative AI (GAI) ushering in a new era of possibilities. The research presented here explores how GAI can enhance creativity and assist Design practitioners with tasks to create products such as, but not limited to, renderings, concepts, construction techniques, materials, data analytics or maps. We apply a framework of combinational, exploratory and transformational creativity to organize how recent advancements in GAI can support each creative category. We propose a conceptual framework of GAI towards transformational creativity, and identify real-world examples to demonstrate GAI's impact, such as transforming sketches into detailed renders, facilitating real-time 3D model generation, predicting trends through analytics and creating images or reports via text prompts. Our work envisions a future where GAI becomes a real-time collaborator to complete certain automated tasks while liberating Designers to focus on transformational innovation. © 2024
