The optical design of a passive remote sensor, a panoramic spectroradiometer (PANsPEC), and its computer-simulated image performance are presented. PANsPEC monitors the surrounding infrared environment for chemical clou.s. detecting a presence once absorption or emission spectra characteristic of the chemical species are resolved. PANsPEC broadcasts chemical presence and cloud heading when equipped with a laser transmitter that projects a polarized laser beam source with phase encryption back through the optical system into object space. Various merit functions were programmed and accessed during computer optimization ru.s.for shaping and positioning of the instrument'ssemishell entrance window, collector, collimator, interferometer, and imager. The result is a balanced near-diffraction-limited circular image, 6.3 mm across with 10-line pairs/mm spatial resolution at 50% modulation, and an f/2.3 working speed. A new method has been developed to identify the isomers of amino acids by derivatization of the corresponding standards with 1-fluoro-2,4-dinitrophenyl-5-L-alanine amide (Marfey's reagent or FDAA) and analysis of the diastereomeric derivatives by a liquid chromatography-thermospray massspectrometry technique. Quantification of the FDAA derivatives that originate from standards was possible by using L-phenylalanine as the internal standard. The procedure was applied to determine the chiralities of the amino acids present in some previously uncharacterized blue-green algal peptides (microcystins).

Previous work, regarding the engineering design of metal armature contacts hasshown that copper, plated on aluminum armatures, as a contact material in rail gu.s. may be over twice as good as aluminum, It wasstated, also, that the armature contacts obey the same physics as pinon-disk contact experiments have shown, Recent work has led to the development of a process for the copper plating of aluminum 7075-T6 armature contact surfaces. This paper reports on the armature fabrication process, the copper plating, and the associated testing required to assure that the copper adheres to the aluminum armature su.s.rate material, The armatures were test fired at ARL and the results of these tests and observations are presented.

This paper describes a modification to the tricyclic theory to include the effect of a liquid payload on the motion and stability of the projectile. The influence on the projectile's motion by the liquid payload issimilar to the Magnus effect. A computer program has been developed that determines the complex projectile motion using either theoretical estimates of liquid-rill characteristics or experimental results obtained from a test fixture for nonrigid payloads. Preliminary stability assessments for liquid-filled projectiles can be made rapidly and provide a means of determining the relative importance between the aerodynamic and liquid-rill characteristics on the projectiles night stability. Flight stability predictionsshow good agreement with night tests of liquid-filled, 155-mm projectiles.

An apparatus has been developed, constructed, and tested for measuring instantaneous angular positions of a single parachute canopy or a cluster of canopies relative to the payload. The apparatus is designed such that the opening forces from the canopies are not transmitted to the apparatus, which can accordingly be used for any canopy size. The apparatus was installed on the payload of a cluster of 14-ft diameter canopies, and their instantaneous angular position relative to the payload during opening were successfully measured. The results are useful for the study of canopy-opening dynamics. The angular position of a ram-air gliding wing was also successfully measured by the apparatus. (Author)

A parametric model has been developed to predict the performance of body armor systemsunder impact by a chunky steel projectile of arbitrary mass, shape, impact velocity, and impact obliquity. The model, which is based on a six-dimensional nonlinear regression analysis of extensive test data for Kevlar 29, is capable of predicting the performance of these body armor systems with user-defined areal density. The model partitions the energy absorbed by the body armor system into strain and kinetic energy;at impact velocities well above the ballistic limit of the system, the predominant mechanism of energy absorption is through kinetic energy transfer. The implications of this fact on the design of lightweight armor systems are discu.s.d, along with the development of the model and suggestions for itsuse in designing, optimizing, and evaluating the functional utility of body armor systems.

The emergence of LAN architectures in Combat Vehicle computer systems is part of an emerging new class of LAN systems. These systems operate in harsh, non-deterministic environments, and are expected to sustain faults and continue operating. The computer systems perform dual functions of system control and real-time information exchange. The LANs in these systems have a hybrid message set consisting of vehicle control messages with crisply defined time constraints and real-time information with vaguely defined time constraints. Among platforms of this type, we find combat vehicles of all types, systems involved in the clean up of hazardous materials, space vehicles, and special antiterrorist vehicles. We present the Adaptive Earliest Deadline First (AEDF) scheduling algorithm and a benefit metric for measuring performance. The AEDF scheduler was developed for the message sets found in combat vehicle LANs. Thisscheduler guarantees 100% of message time constraintsunder nominal conditions and optimizesscheduling under overload conditions induced by faults. The benefit metric provides an accurate means of evaluating scheduler performance based on message importance, timeliness and state.

In societiessuch as the u.s.A. many foods are considered appropriate or inappropriate for particular meals. Although some previous work has indicated that hedonic ratings reflect these cultural patterns, little is known about the impact of time of day and "appropriateness" in particular on food acceptance and intake. The purpose of the present study was to explore the role of appropriateness on consumption and hedonic ratings of breakfast and non-breakfast foods. Experiment 1 examined these factors in the context of four meals in which the type of menu (breakfast or lunch) was factorially combined with time of day (breakfast time or lunchtime). Experiment 2 examined hedonic ratings obtained in the morning and afternoon using samples of the same foods and rating methodsused in Experiment 1. Experiment 3 replicated Experiment 2 but employed the rating methodsused in Birch et al. (1984). Results from the three experiments indicated that the appropriateness or inappropriateness of when foods were served had no effect upon hedonic ratings and no clear impact on food intake. Postmeal hunger ratings in Experiment 1, however, provided some support for the salience of appropriateness. These resultssuggest that appropriateness may be more relevant to food selection than to consumption or palatability per se.

Heat transfer and water vapor transport measurements performed at three laboratoriesusing the `sweating' guarded hot plate apparatus were standardized based on the International Organization for standardization (IsO) International standard 11092. Comparison testing was conducted on four standard military uniform materials. The adherence to IsO 11092 resulted in good agreement among the three laboratories between measured valu.s.of thermal resistance and water vapor resistance for the four materials.
