This paper addresses a simple, yet fundamental question in the design of peer-to-peer systems: What does it mean when we say "availability" and how does this understanding impact the engineering of practical systems? We argue that existing measurements and models do not capture the complex time-varying nature of availability in today’s peer-to-peer environments. Further, we show that unforeseen methodological shortcomings have dramatically biased previous analyses of this phenomenon. As the basis of our study, we empirically characterize the availability of a large peer-to-peer system over a period of 7 days, analyze the dependence of the underlying availability distributions, measure host turnover in the system, and discuss how these results may affect the design of high-availability peer-to-peer services. © Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg 2003.

Control of variability and performance in the back end of the VLSI manufacturing line has become extremely difficult with the introduction of new materials such as copper and low-k dielectrics. Uniformity of chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP) requires the insertion of area fill features into the layout, in order to smoothen the variation of feature densities across the die and thus improve manufacturability. Because the size of area fill features is very small compared with the large empty layout areas that must be filled, the filling process can increase the size of a GDSII file by an order of magnitude or more. Data compression is therefore a significant issue in successful fill synthesis. In this paper, we introduce compressed fill strategies which exploit the GDSII array reference record (AREF) construct. We apply greedy and linear programming based optimization techniques, and obtain practical compressed filling solutions. © 2003 IEEE.

Chemical-mechanical planarization (CMP) and other manufacturing steps in very deep-submicron VLSI have varying effects on device and interconnect features, depending on the local layout density. To improve manufacturability and performance predictability, area fill features are inserted into the layout to improve uniformity with respect to density criteria. However, the performance impact of area fill insertion is not considered by any fill method in the literature. In this paper, we first review and develop estimates for capacitance and timing overhead of area fill insertions. We then give the first formulations of the Performance Impact Limited Fill (PIL-Fill) problem with the objective of either minimizing total delay impact (MDFC) or maximizing the minimum slack of all nets (MSFC), subject to inserting a given prescribed amount of fill. For the MDFC PIL-Fill problem, we describe three practical solution approaches based on Integer Linear Programming (ILP-I and ILP-II) and the Greedy method. For the MSFC PIL-Fill problem, we describe an iterated greedy method that integrates call to an industry static timing analysis tool. We test our methods on layout testcases obtained from industry. Compared with the normal fill method [3], our ILP-II method for MDFC PIL-Fill problem achieves between 25% and 90% reduction in terms of total weighted edge delay (roughly, a measure of sum of node slacks) impact while maintaining identical quality of the layout density control;and our iterated greedy method for MSFC PIL-Fill problem also shows significant advantage with respect to the minimum slack of nets on post-fill layout.

A fully parallel prototype readout system that allows digitization and acquisition of 64 or more anode signals from a position sensitive photomultiplier tube (PSPMT) was developed for miniature hand-held gamma camera. This acquisition system was developed to study the benefits of a fully digital readout system compared to charge multiplexed techniques such as resistive division. The system is based on the CAMAC instrumentation standard and is controlled via a Macintosh computer. Four 16-channel charge-to-digital conversion (QDC) CAMAC modules were used to digitize individual anode signals from the PSPMT. To maximize the data transfer rate, a list processor module is also added in the system. Kmax software from SPARROW is used for acquisition and processing of the digitized data. The system provided greater than 0.5% improvement in linearity and ∼3% improvement in energy resolution when a gain correction is applied to list-mode data. More than 6% improvement in linearity, better image quality with 16:1 peak to valley ratio, and higher edge sensitivity is obtained compared to resistive division readout method.

We present a location detection system for tracking multimedia appliances and users within a wireless local area network (WLAN) enabled home environment. Multimedia appliances communicate with a central gateway via low cost network interface devices called buddies. The gateway can locate the users and appliances within the accuracy of a room and use the location information to automatically redirect media streams to user's presence. We call this paradigm as a media cloud. This paper presents the scheme for collecting proximity information from the buddies and effective techniques to determine their location. We have implemented the location detection system and present an experimental performance evaluation.

Wireless LANs based on the IEEE 802.11 technology are becoming increasingly prevalent. Te availability of high bandwidth together with the convenience of being a wireless medium makes it a compelling technology for multimedia-based applications. In this paper, we present a gateway-based architecture of the wireless home media network and develop a secure registration protocol that is appropriate for such an architecture. The primary goal of the protocol is to provide a secure bootstrap registration mechanism for a new media appliance and to ensure a secure communication path between appliances and the gateway that minimizes the resource usage at the appliance.

We empirically evaluate the performance of various reinforcement learning methods in applications to sequential targeted marketing. In particular we propose and evaluate a progression of reinforcement learning methods, ranging from the "direct" or "batch" methods to "indirect" or "simulation based" methods, and those that we call "semidirect" methods that fall between them. We conduct a number of controlled experiments to evaluate the performance of these competing methods. Our results indicate that while the indirect methods can perform better in a situation in which nearly perfect modeling is possible, under the more realistic situations in which the system's modeling parameters have restricted attention, the indirect methods' performance tend to degrade. We also show that semi-direct methods are effective in reducing the amount of computation necessary to attain a given level of performance, and often result in more profitable policies.

We identify the importance of adaptation for the ubiquitous access to Internet multimedia content. The variety of media types combined with the diversity of Internet connection characteristics raises momentous challenges to the achievement of this goal. With adaptation, the characteristics of various media can be adjusted to better match those of the network path and the end device. As a result, adaptive streams enjoy superior robustness and provide substantially better presentation quality than traditional, non-adaptive ones, especially in variable, capacity-limited environments. We examine several important factors that influence the design and optimization of the adaptation architecture. First, the location of the adaptation mechanism on the end-to-end path must be chosen. Second, the adaptation policy, i.e., the agility in adapting to variations in network path performance, must be specified. Third, the adaptation mechanism needs to be aware of the value of the perceptual quality that the different representations of each medium and the necessary resources to sustain it. Finally, we emphasize the role of supporting mechanisms in enhancing the adaptation process, namely, prioritization, admission control and hand-off notifications. Based on the aforementioned criteria, we classify existing research approaches and present some of them as case studies. We also describe current commercial solutions and, finally, we discuss future trends in application adaptation in conjunction with recent developments towards wireless access to the Internet.
