We show that complex (scale-free) network topologies naturally emerge from hyperbolic metric spaces. Hyperbolic geometry facilitates maximally efficient greedy forwarding in these networks. Greedy forwarding is topology-oblivious. Nevertheless, greedy packets find their destinations with 100percent probability following almost optimal shortest paths. This remarkable efficiency sustains even in highly dynamic networks. Our findings suggest that forwarding information through complex networks, such as the Internet, is possible without the overhead of existing routing protocols, and may also find practical applications in overlay networks for tasks such as application-level routing, information sharing, and data distribution.

We develop a geometric framework to study the structure and function of complex networks. We assume that hyperbolic geometry underlies these networks, and we show that with this assumption, heterogeneous degree distributions and strong clustering in complex networks emerge naturally as simple reflections of the negative curvature and metric property of the underlying hyperbolic geometry. Conversely, we show that if a network has some metric structure, and if the network degree distribution is heterogeneous, then the network has an effective hyperbolic geometry underneath. We then establish a mapping between our geometric framework and statistical mechanics of complex networks. This mapping interprets edges in a network as noninteracting fermions whose energies are hyperbolic distances between nodes, while the auxiliary fields coupled to edges are linear functions of these energies or distances. The geometric network ensemble subsumes the standard configuration model and classical random graphs as two limiting cases with degenerate geometric structures. Finally, we show that targeted transport processes without global topology knowledge, made possible by our geometric framework, are maximally efficient, according to all efficiency measures, in networks with strongest heterogeneity and clustering, and that this efficiency is remarkably robust with respect to even catastrophic disturbances and damages to the network structure.

Thermal management is a critical challenge in the design of high performance multi-processor system-on-chips (MPSoCs). Therefore, accurate and fast thermal modeling tools are necessary for efficiently analyzing the thermal profiles of MPSoCs. This paper advances state-of-the-art MPSoC thermal modeling approaches in several directions. Our first contribution is a novel matrix state-space compatible representation of MPSoC thermal behavior. This representation can be used to choose the "best fit" solver among various ordinary differential equation (ODE) solvers according to the required accuracy and simulation speed. Then, we exploit this representation to develop an adaptive thermal simulation infrastructure that provides the shortest simulation time for the desired thermal modeling accuracy and the given MPSoC floorplan. The experimental results, which are based on a commercial 8-core MPSoC, show that our thermal simulation method achieves both higher thermal estimation accuracy (6× better) and faster simulation time (up to 70%) when compared to state-of-the-art MPSoC thermal simulators. © 2009 IEEE.

There is a growing body of experimental evidence suggesting that the Ca2+ signaling in ventricular myocytes is characterized by a high gradient near the cell membrane and a more uniform Ca2+ distribution in the cell interior [1]--[7]. An important reason for this phenomenon might be that in these cells the t-tubular system forms a network of extracellular space, extending deep into the cell interior. This allows the electrical signal, that propagates rapidly along the cell membrane, to reach the vicinity of the sarcoplasmic reticulum (SR), where intracellular Ca2+ required for myofilament activation is stored [1], [8]--[11]. Early studies of cardiac muscle showed that the t-tubules are found at intervals of about 2 lm along the longitudinal cell axis in close proximity to the Z-disks of the sarcomeres [12]. Subsequent studies have demonstrated that the t-tubular system has also longitudinal extensions [9]--[11], [13].

The NSF-funded OptIPuter project [see *** and special issue of Future Generation computer Systems (FGCS), Volume 25, Issue 2, February 2009] has been exploring for the last six years how user-controlled 10Gbps dedicated lightpaths (lambdas) can provide direct access to global data repositories, scientific instruments, and computational resources from the researchers' Linux clusters in their campus laboratories. These clusters are reconfigured as "OptlPortals," providing the end users with local scalable visualization, computing, and storage. Using the 10 Gbps lightpaths available over the National Lambda Rail (NLR) and the Global Lambda Integrated Facility (GLIF), this new distributed architecture creates an end-to-end "OptlPlatform" for data-intensive research.

We implemented and analyzed the battery lifetime optimization problem for wireless healthcare systems and showed that task assignment can play a major role in energy management. In the static case, where system parameters are fixed (e.g. processing and communication latency), the assignment of tasks to heterogeneous nodes in the system significantly affects performance and the level of available energy. Since task binding and scheduling problems are NP hard, heuristic algorithms are needed for practical solutions. Furthermore, the overall system characteristics are dynamically changing - the availability of the wireless network and its throughput, battery capacity of various nodes in the system, the user's needs, etc. To address the dynamic aspects of the system and the resource constrained nature of the mobile nodes, we will implement a heuristic algorithm to achieve a longer battery lifetime of the system. We plan to evaluate the performance of the heuristic and compare it against the optimal solutions produced by the ILP.

We show that heterogeneous degree distributions in observed scale-free topologies of complex networks can emerge as a consequence of the exponential expansion of hidden hyperbolic space. Fermi-Dirac statistics provides a physical interpretation of hyperbolic distances as energies of links. The hidden space curvature affects the heterogeneity of the degree distribution, while clustering is a function of temperature. We embed the internet into the hyperbolic plane and find a remarkable congruency between the embedding and our hyperbolic model. Besides proving our model realistic, this embedding may be used for routing with only local information, which holds significant promise for improving the performance of internet routing.
