This paper presents the implementation of ARQ-PROP II, a limited-depth propositional reasoner, via the compilation of its specification into an exact formulation using the satyrus platform. satyrus' compiler takes as input the definition of a problem as a set of pseudo-Boolean constraints and produces, as output, the Energy function of a higher-order artificial neural network. This way, satisfiability of a formula can be associated to global optima. In the case of ARQ-PROP II, global optima is associated to Resolution-based refutation, in such a way that allows for simplified abduction and prediction to be unified with deduction. Besides experimental results on deduction with ARQ-PROP II, this work also corrects the mapping of satisfiability into Energy minima originally proposed by Gadi Pinkas. © 2007 Springer-Verlag Berlin Heidelberg.

We present the fuzzy Markov predictor (FMP), a hybrid system that is applied to the task of monthly electric load forecasting. The FMP is a modification we introduce in the hidden Markov model in order to enable it to predict numerical values. The FMP can be seen as an extension of the fuzzy Bayes predictor (FBP) that was modified from the naive Bayes classifier. For verifying the efficiency of the FMP's prediction, we compare it with the FBP, one fuzzy system and two traditional forecasting methods, Box-Jenkins and Winters exponential smoothing.

Objective: to investigate studies about software processes looking for practices which can be used to obtain agility in software processes. Method: A systematic review including seven search engines was executed in Feb/2010. To apply the defined criteria to select papers and extract information regarding working practices bringing agility to software processes. Results: from 6696 retrieved papers, 441 were selected to support the identification of 236 occurrences of 51 distinct practices associated with the concept of agility. Their descriptions were deeply analyzed and consolidated. After discarding those which appeared in the technical literature in a small amount of papers, 17 agile practices were identified. Conclusion: although further studies are necessary to evaluate the efficacy of these 17 agile practices, 12 of them have been more commonly approached in the software projects and could be primarily considered: test driven development, continuous integration, pair programming, planning game, onsite customer, collective code ownership, small releases, metaphor, refactoring, sustainable pace, simple design and coding standards.

The rise of artificial intelligence agents and information technology platforms governed by data-driven algorithms has had profound impacts on the way knowledge work is managed and carried out. Concerning the novel uses of digital work platforms, the arising tensions might suggest that the socio-technical design frameworks adopted by major tech firms are becoming less viable and in some cases ineffective. We propose a conceptual architecture to support a socio-technical framework for exploring Personal Knowledge Ecologies in the context of the digital knowledge economy. This framework aims to increase the degree of individual freedom for the interoperation of these knowledge information infrastructures.

BPMN 2.0 is a widely used notation to model business process that has associated tools and techniques to facilitate process management, execution and monitoring. As a result using BPMN to model Software Development Process (SDP) can leverage on the BPMN's infrastructure to improve SDP quality. Nevertheless, when using BPMN to model Software Processes one can observe the lack of an important feature: means to represent process tailoring. This article introduces the BPMNt, a conservative extension to BPMN that aims at aggregating a tailoring representation mechanism as the one found at SPEM 2.0. BPMNt uses the extensibility classes already present in the BPMN meta-model. Our work also presents an example to illustrate the approach.

This paper's main goal is to structure an initial research on the Software Ecosystem (SECO) field, regarding the so called CAMSS (Cloud, Analytics, Mobile, Social and Security) and IoT (Internet of Things) technologies. Our main goal is to share our first ideas and some observations we have been conducting in an empirical way. As such, Cloud SECOs bring the ecosystem environment to another level, with new challenges in all three dimensions: technology, social and business. Besides that, we have been observing a possible shift in the center of some SECOs, i.e., Those "things" connected to the Internet have introduced new players - at least in the sense they interact with the environment by providing data. As new software architectures and technologies emerge to support the new scenario being drawn, our research tries to characterize this new ecosystem and identify challenges, providing a roadmap that could help new entrants.

Real time performance of non-interactive rendering of three-dimensional scenes is usually unachievable. Ray tracing is one of the methods used for rendering such scenes. The performance achieved by a sequential software-based implementation of ray tracing is far from satisfactory. In contrast, many parallel implementations of ray tracing have been enabling real time performance, as the underlying algorithm can be massively parallelised. Thus, it is expected that a custom parallel design in hardware is likely to achieve the acceptable performance standards. In this paper, we propose a hardware architecture, which we call GridRT, capable of dealing with the main desirable features of ray tracing, such as shadows and reflections effects, imposing low requirements in terms of silicon area while achieving acceptable performance in terms of rendering time. This architecture achieves is efficient yet compact as it explores the massive parallelism offered by the intrinsic structure of the algorithm. Domain engineering (DE) and Component-based Development (CBD) are approaches that focus on reuse. On the one hand, DE methods emphasize variability modeling in analysis phase. On the other hand, most CBD methods gude on the development of components, with a minor focus on reusability properties. Citizen engagement in building user-curated narratives of complex or long-lasting news stories has been the key foundation of the design and implementation of the Acropolis virtual environment. Previous user studies have shown, by positive evidence, that this goal can be pragmatically achieved, but the challenge now lies in assessing: a) the extent to which an environment like Acropolis can be used to empower citizens; and b) whether and how the tool could be used to support the work of professional curators. Findings from a focus group study highlighted the tool's potential to engage citizens with news, the usefulness of the environment to build virtual memories, and the convenience of using Acropolis to support professional journalistic work.

In Bio informatics, the prediction of protein function is considered a very important task but also difficult. Using a set of enzymes represented by Hydrolase, Isomerase, Ligase, Lyase, Transferase and Oxidoreductase classes, previously used by Dobson et ah, this paper proposes a self-learning process able to predict their classes, based on their primary and secondary structures, through a Support Vector Machine (SVM) classifier and genetic algorithm. An SVM can he characterized as a supervised machine learning algorithm capable of resolving linear and non-linear classification problems. During the learning process, both the training data and the corresponding output are presented to the SVM to allow its parameters to he adjusted. This study utilized genetic algorithms - optimization heuristics often used to estimate parameters - to adjust the main parameters of the classifier such as kernel function type and parameter C, which provides the relationship between the training error and the margin of separation between classes. In this specific prediction problem, the results indicate that the best function is an RBF where width is 6.1 and C is 6.9. Using these parameters, the classifier obtains an average accuracy of 79.74%.
