We present an evolutionary algorithm for the inference of context-free grammars from positive and negative examples. The algorithm is based on genetic programming and uses a local optimization operator that is capable of improving the learning task. Ordinary genetic operators are modified so as to bias the search. The system was evaluated using Tomitas language examples and results were compared with another similar approach. Results show that the proposed approach is promising and more robust than the other one.

In this work, we propose an optical OFDM system using phase modulation followed by optical filtering and direct detection. A fiber Bragg grating is used as an optical filter for phase to amplitude conversion. The performance of the proposed system is investigated for both 16 QAM- and 64 QAM-OFDM signals considering different numbers of training signals for frequency-domain channel estimation. With adequate choice of the training sequence length, BER results below 10 −4 are reported for the 16 QAM based signal.

A simulation model for a Brazilian pipeline network used to transport heavy oil derivatives is presented. The network has four refineries, three intermediate depots, a harbor and seven pipelines. The transport is influenced by supply needs and operational constraints. The network schedule is generated online by a simulation model. The objectives are to generate the schedule in accordance with a nondeterministic arrival of ships and to compare this schedule with the one generated by a hybrid approach that combines optimization and simulation techniques. With the simulation-only approach herein proposed, the pipelines are modeled as continuous flow entities. The obtained results allow the validation of different probability distributions for the arrival of ships and they indicate the differences of both approaches: the hybrid and the simulation-only.

This paper presents a new algorithm for discontinuity location and characterization using A-scan signals from an ultrasonic inspection system. The algorithm is based on solving an inverse problem in which the observation model is different from that traditionally used. In this model, the input vector represents the location of the geometrical center of the discontinuity and the scattering amplitude of the discontinuity is embedded in the impulse response of the ultrasonic inspection system. First, we jointly estimate the locations and the scattering amplitudes of the discontinuities from the acquired signals. Then, the geometrical parameters of the discontinuities are calculated from the estimated scattering amplitude. The method is tested to characterize side-drilled holes using both synthetic and real data. The results demonstrates the effectiveness of the algorithm.
