Urbach:received his B.A. degree in Chemistry from Indiana University in 1948 his M.A. degree in Physical Chemistry from Columbia University in 1950 his Ph.D. degree in Physical Chemistry from Case-Western Reserve University in 1953 and his M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from The George Washington University in 1976. After receiving his doctorate he was employed by Olin Mathieson Corporation Niagara Falls N. Y. as a Group Leader and Research Chemist on rocket fuels borane chemistry and the reactions of oxygen atoms with ozone. In 1959 he joined the United Technology Research Laboratories East Hartford Conn. as a Senior Research Scientist working in the area of fuel cells and electrochemistry. Presently he is a Scientific Staff Assistant in the Power Systems Division David W. Taylor Naval Ship Research and Development Center where since 1965 he has performed research and development studies on fuel cells gas turbines biphase turbines and MHD systems. Additionally Dr. Urbach was a Consultant to the Artificial Heart Program of the National Heart and Lung Institute NIH and presently is a member of the New York Academy of Science Sigma Xi American Chemical Society Electrochemical Society American Institute of Aeronautics and Astronautics and the American Society of Mechanical Engineers. Dr. Donald T. Knauss:received his B.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering from Duke University in 1956 at which time he took employment with the NASA Lewis Research Center Cleveland Ohio. Here he was involved with aircraft propulsion innovations until his entry into military service with the U.S. Air Force. After completing work toward his M.S.M.E. degree at Purdue University in 1962 he was employed by Battelle Memorial Institute Columbia Ohio where he was involved in a variety of projects related to Fluid and Thermal Mechanics. He received a B.A. in Mathematics (magna cum laude)from Wabash College and an M.S. in mathematics an M.S. in statistics and a Ph.D. in statistics from the University of Wisconsin. From November 1973 until February 1999 he was president and principal statistician at Desmatics Inc. where he participated in a number of studies involving the application of statistical methods to various technical problems in the Navy's environmental-protection and auxiliary-machinery programs. Dr. Smith was instrumental in developing the statistical procedures underlying the Navy's ODS reserve monitoring plan. DAVID A. BRESLIN P.E. is the director of technical operations for the Naval Surface Warfare Center and chairs the ASNE/SNAME Joint Committee on Environmental Engineering. He received a master of science in aerospace engineering from Virginia Tech a master of engineering administration in industrial and systems engineering from Virginia Tech and a bachelor of engineering in mechanical engineering from Stevens Institute of Technology. From 1993 to 1997 he was the program manager of the Naval Sea Systems Command's CFC and Halon Elimination Program and played a critical role in establishing the Navy's strategic reserve of ozone-depleting substances. Because of his many efforts he received a Stratospheric Ozone Protection Award in 1995 from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency in recognition of “exceptional contributions to global environmental protection”. Carlson received his B.S. degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering from the University of Michigan in 1970 and began his career with the Department of the Navy at the Naval Ship Engineering Center (NAVSEC). In 1972. he returned to the University of Michigan under the NAVSEC Long Term Training Program and received his M.S. degree in Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering. After returning to the Ship Arrangements Branch at NAVSEC. he was assigned as Task Leader for General Arrangements for the PGG PCG PHM. and MCM ship designs and was awarded Outstanding Performance Awards in 1974 and 1975. In addition he was Manager of the Arrangement Subsystem of the Navy's Computer-Aided Ship Design and Construction Program (CASDAC). In October 1979. he became Manager of the CASDAC Hull Design System. Currently. he also is enrolled in the M.S. of Computer Science Program at Johns Hopkins University. Mr. Carlson previously has presented technical papers at ASNE Day 1974 and 1978 as well as at the 1979 DOD Manufacturing Technology Advisory Group Conference. Besides ASNE. which he joined in 1972. he is a member of SNAME. ASE. and the U.S. Naval Institute. Mr. Robert A. Johnson is a Naval Architect in Surface Combatants Design (SEA 03D3). Ship Design Integration Directorate Naval Sea Systems Command. He received an Associate in Engineering degree in Drafting and Design Technology in 1959. his B.S. degree in Aerospace Engineering in 1965. and his M.S. degree in Engineering Mechanics in 1970. all from the Pennsylvania State University. Prior to government service he worked for Newport News Shipbuilding as a fluid systems engineer and for Gibbs & Cox as a project engineer. Mr. Huff entered government service in 1977 with the Military Sealift Command Engineering Operations Division then as a construction representative and finally as deputy director ship design and construction. He then moved to NAVSEA in 1989 as assistant project manager on the conversion of AO-177 oilers to AO (JUMBO). From 1993 through 2000 he was assistant project manager for the construction of T-AKR-300 Class of Strategic Sealift RO/RO ships at Avondale. Currently Mr. Huff is manager of the Advanced Projects Group within the PEO EXW Auxiliary Boats and Crafts Program Office. Kevin M. Lynaugh obtained his naval architecture and marine engineering degree from University of California Berkeley in 1984. He obtained his Master's degree in science and engineering from The Johns Hopkins University in 1997 with a dual major in program management and operations management. He has been with NAVSEA Naval Surface Warfare Center Carderock Division for over 16 years. He spent four years with the Hydromechanics Division computerizing the Model Design Group two years with the Large Cavitation Channel Project as a project engineer six years with the Ship Building Technologies Department as a task area manager managing research programs the past 3 ½ years with the Strategic Sealift Program as the ship design manager for Avondale's new con-struction and as the deputy assistant program manager for post delivery and NASSCO's new construction. Currently Mr. Lynaugh is the on-site ship design manager for LHD-8 at Ingalls Shipyard in Pascagoula Mississippi.

作者: HOPE, JP STORTZ, VE Jan Paul Hope a native of Northern Virginia received his bachelor of science degree in mechanical engineering from the University of Virginia in 1969. Upon graduation he began his career in the Department of the Navy with the Naval Ship Systems Command in the acquisition of patrol craft mine sweepers and submarine rescue ships. In January 1971 he transferred to the ship arrangements branch of the Naval Ship Engineering Center. He was selected for the long-term training program at George Washington University in 1974 and completed the program in February 1976 with the degree of master of engineering administration. While at the Naval Ship Engineering Center Mr. Hope was general arrangement task leader on the AO-177 CG-47 CSGN CSGN (VSTOL) CGN-9 (Aegis) and CGN-42 and he also assisted in the landmark Naval Sea Systems Command civilian professional community study. In 1978 he was selected as acting head of the damage control section and subsequently was selected as acting head of the surface ship hydrodynamic section. In February 1980 he was promoted to head of the surface combatant arrangements design section. Mr. Hope was selected for the first class of the NA VSEA commander's development program. While on the program he served in the DDGX combat systems engineering division and the DDGX project office of NA VSEA was the assistant director for ship design in the office of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for shipbuilding and logistics and was the director of weight engineering and the director of systems engineering for the DDG-51 project in NA VSEA. Upon completion of the program Mr. Hope was assigned as the deputy director of the boiler engineering division to create a new division as a major fleet support initiative by NA VSEA. In June 1985 he joined the staff of the Assistant Secretary of the Navy for shipbuilding and logistics. The Regional Deterrence Ship (RDS 2010) - A design for littoral warfare in the 2010 timeframe

He is a graduate of the Naval Academy who served as a surface warfare officer. After completion of his graduate education at MIT he became an Engineering Duty Officer and served at Boston Naval Shipyard in several capacities. He was the Repair Facilities Advisor to the Vietnamese Navy the Project Officer for construction of nuclear powered guided missile cruisers (CGNs) at the Supervisor of Shipbuilding Newport News Virginia and served on the staff of the Commander Naval Surface Forces U.S. Atlantic Fleet and later at the Supervisor of Shipbuilding in Portsmouth Virginia in maintenance and overhaul management positions. He was Officer in Charge of the Annapolis Laboratory of the David Taylor Research Center and Commanding Officer of the Engineering Duty Officer School. He retired from active duty in October 1991 after serving in the Naval Sea Systems Command as the Director of the Ship Design Group and of the Advanced Concepts and Technology Group. Lt. Jeffrey S. Riedel USN:is an Engineering Duty Officer currently assigned to the Supervisor of Shipbuilding Bath Maine. He obtained his B.S. degree in Marine Engineering from Maine Maritime Academy in 1986 and his M.S. degree in Mechanical Engineering plus a Mechanical Engineer's degree from the Naval Postgraduate School in 1993. Lt. Riedel's naval career has included duty aboaqrd USS Wainwright (CG 28) as auxiliaries officer damage control assistant and main machinery officer. Currently he serves as the assistant production officer at SUPSHIP Bath in charge of DDG 51 class construction and delivery.

He is a Fellow of the American Physical Society and from 1966 until 1967 spent a Sabbatical Leave at the Niels Bohr Institute in Copenhagen. Denmark. At present he divides his time between technical and management activities as Head of the Program and Resource Analysis Office at NRL. Mr. Robert E. Proodianreceived his BS degree in Plastics Technology from the Lowell Technological Institute and is currently enrolled in the Graduate School (Center for Technology and Administration) at The American University. He joined the Non—Metallic Materials Branch of the Naval Ship Engineering Center (NAVSEC) in 1968 where he was engaged in the technical management of R&D for new polymer systems for the Navy. In 1974 he joined NRL as a Program Liaison Officer for the Chemistry Division and in 1976 he was transferred to his present position in the Laboratory's Program and Resource Analysis Office.
The paper presents a compact method for displaying vehicle weight distributions and utilizes this in a discussion of design “trade—offs” for military vehicles.
