The purpose of this study is to develop and investigate a new rough clustering based on optimization. We propose a restructured algorithm using only one variable, instead of the algorithm described using two variables in existing methods. We also perform numerical examples using artificial data and the Iris and Wine datasets. This research has the potential to be used as a method for determining false negatives and false positives in cancer diagnosis. © 2024 IEEE.

An efficient diagnosis is very important for a multiprocessor system. In this paper, we present a (α, β) -trees combination S(u, X, α, β) and give some conclusions about the local diagnosis. Based on the (α, β) -trees combination, we give a conditional fault local diagnosis algorithm to identify the fault or fault-free status of each processor correctly under the MM ∗ model when the number of faulty nodes does not exceed α+ 2 β- 3 and every node has at least one fault-free neighboring node. According to our results, a connected network with a (α, β) -trees combination S(u, X, α, β) for a node u is conditionally locally (α+ 2 β- 3 ) -diagnosable at node u and the time complexity of our algorithm to diagnose u is O(α2β+ αβ2). As an application, we show that our algorithm can identify all the faulty nodes of n-dimensional star graph Sn if the faulty node number does not exceed 3 n- 8. Compared with existing algorithms, our algorithm allows more faulty node in a multiprocessor system. © 2022, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

Winged fruits possess a unique flight mechanism relying on simple geometric structures rather than neuromuscular control. This study proposes an innovative approach using origami techniques to create three-winged model fruits, serving as a proxy for understanding the flight dynamics of natural winged fruits. Paper is employed to simulate inherent wing flexibility, with the option to add plastic frames for rigidity. We comprehensively investigate the free fall motion of both rigid and flexible winged fruits through experimental and numerical analyses. Velocity–time curves reveal a three-stage descent pattern—acceleration, deceleration, and steady states. The overshoot phenomenon is attributed to rapid lift increase due to leading-edge vortices attaching stably to the wings. This insight sheds light on aerodynamics governing fruit flight. Compared with rigid wings, flexible wings exhibit two key properties—slower descent and higher self-orienting capability—that facilitate a more stable and longer-distance dispersal of seeds under crosswind conditions. Our study demonstrates the potential benefits of flexible wings in natural seed distribution. This study advances our understanding of winged fruit flight dynamics, utilizing origami as a powerful tool for biomimetic investigations. The findings have broad implications, from improving aerodynamic designs to developing efficient micro air vehicles and electronic microfliers, and understanding seed dispersal evolution. In this paper, we consider random sums with heavy-tailed increments. By the term random sum, we mean a sum of random variables where the number of summands is also random. Our interest is to construct an efficient method to calculate tail-based risk measures such as quantiles and conditional expectation (expected shortfalls). When assuming extreme quantiles and heavy-tailed increments, using standard Monte Carlo method can be inefficient. In previous works, there exists an efficient method to sample rare-events (tail-events) using a Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) with a given threshold. We apply the sampling method to estimate statistics based on tail-information, with a given rare-event probability. The performance is compared with other methods by some numerical results in the case increments follow Pareto distributions. We also show numerical results with Weibull, and Log-Normal distributions. Our proposed method is shown to be efficient especially in cases of extreme tails. © 2014 SciTePress. All rights reserved.

Symmetries are ubiquitous in science, aiding theoretical comprehension by discerning patterns in mathematical models and natural phenomena. This work introduces a method for assessing the extent of symmetry within a time series. We explore both microscopic and macroscopic features extracted from a recurrence plot. By analyzing the statistics of small recurrence matrices, our approach delves into microscale dynamics, facilitating the identification of symmetric time series segments through diagonal macroscale structures on a recurrence plot. We validate our approach by successfully quantifying involution symmetries for three-dimensional dynamical models, specifically, order-2 rotational symmetry in the Lorenz '63 model, and inversion symmetry in the Chua circuit. Our quantifier also detects symmetry breaking in the modified Lorenz model for El Niño phenomenon. The method can be applied in a versatile manner, not only to three-dimensional trajectories but also to univariate time series. Symmetry quantification in time series is promising for enhancing dynamical system modeling and profiling.

作者： HOLDEN, RA The author is a physicist in the Systems Engineering Branch Aegis Ship Combat Systems Division at the Naval Surface Warfare Center (NSWC). He received a B.S. degree in physics and mathematics from Arkansas Polytechnic College in 1965 attended graduate school at Southern Illinois University and University of Illinois receiving a M.S. degree in physics in 1967. He was an electro optics engineer for Delco Electronics before joining NSWC in 1972. He worked as a physicist in naval weapons guidance and control technology from 1972 until joining the Aegis shipbuilding program in 1983. Currently he serves as a combat system engineering group leader supporting the Aegis Program Office (NSWC). In this position he is responsible for a task supporting the Aegis Project Office (PMS-400) for present and planned combat system R&D.

Construction of new ships is typically limited to a rate of two to five per year. The lead ship of a class requires several years for design and construction and follow-on ships are completed at the typical production rate. The total time period to complete a class of multimission surface combatants is fifteen to twenty years. As ships are constructed the combat system gradually falls behind in warfighting capability and may be changed piecemeal in an attempt to keep pace with the advancing threat. Piecemeal changes are costly and create a proliferation of equipments and configurations. An acquisition strategy is described which avoids the annual capability upgrades but provides introduction of state-of-the-art technology at preplanned points in the building program. This will insure maximum commonality and modernization. Defining preplanned combat system upgrades consists of engineering conceptual systems as a departure from real systems under development. For modern integrated combat systems such as Aegis this requires evaluating all changes in terms of total impact on the functional and physical characteristics of the system. This paper describes an approach which defines combat system configurations as baselines and periodically evaluates emerging technology to define new baseline configurations. The configurations defined in this manner insure maximum commonality among ships of the class and still maintains warfighting capability.

Tracking Players in a Badminton Court by Two Cameras

This study proposes a simple method for multi-object tracking (MOT) of players in a badminton court. We leverage two off-the-shelf cameras, one on the top of the court and the other on the side of the court. The one on the top is to track players’ trajectories, while the one on the side is to analyze the pixel features of players. By computing the correlations between adjacent frames and engaging the information of the two cameras, MOT of badminton players is obtained. This two-camera approach addresses the challenge of player occlusion and overlapping in a badminton court, providing player trajectory tracking and multi-angle analysis. The presented system offers insights into the positions and movements of badminton players, thus serving as a coaching or self-training tool for badminton players to improve their gaming strategies. In real world applications of multiclass classification models, misclassification in an important class (e.g., stop sign) can be significantly more harmful than in other classes (e.g., no parking). Thus, it is crucial to improve the recall of an important class while maintaining overall accuracy. For this problem, we found that improving the separation of important classes relative to other classes in the feature space is effective. Existing methods that give a class-sensitive penalty for cross-entropy loss do not improve the separation. Moreover, the methods designed to improve separations between all classes are unsuitable for our purpose because they do not consider the important classes. To achieve the separation, we propose a loss function that explicitly gives loss for the feature space, called class-sensitive additive angular margin (CAMRI) loss. CAMRI loss is expected to reduce the variance of an important class due to the addition of a penalty to the angle between the important class features and the corresponding weight vectors in the feature space. In addition, concentrating the penalty on only the important class hardly sacrifices separating the other classes. Experiments on CIFAR-10, GTSRB, and AwA2 showed that CAMRI loss could improve the recall of a specific class without sacrificing accuracy. In particular, compared with GTSRB's second-worst class recall when trained with cross-entropy loss, CAMRI loss improved recall by 9%. © 2023 The Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers.

He participated in the cooperative education program at the University of Maryland graduating in 1981 with a B.S. degree in electrical engineering. In 1985 Mr. Jump received his M.S. degree in electrical engineering from the Whiting School of Engineering Johns Hopkins University. During the EMPRESS II trial of USSDeyoDD-989 Mr. Jump functioned as the technical trial director and his responsibilities included insuring all trial objectives were appropriately met. William C. Embersonis a systems analyst in the Protection Systems Department of the Naval Surface Warfare Center White Oak Laboratory Silver Spring Md. He received his B.S. degree in electrical engineering from Purdue University in 1964 and his M.S. in electrical engineering at the Illinois Institute of Technology in 1971. Since joining NAVSWC in 1973 he has helped lead the Navy's EMP program to where it is today and has led the development of the center's nuclear warfare analysis capability. Currently he is responsible for the technical direction of an integrated system analysis for the entire spectrum of protection systems programs.

The Navy conducted an EMP (Electromagnetic Pulse) trial on a Spruance class destroyer (USS Deyo;DD-989) during July 1990 using the Electromagnetic Pulse Radio Frequency Environment Simulator for Ships (EMPRESS II). The Navy has selected a layered hardening approach consisting of platform level hardening and system level hardening to provide EMP survivability for the mission critical systems of surface ships. One key question is how much of the hardening can be allocated to and achieved by platform hardening? The other key questions are which systems will also require system level hardening and can system level hardening be effectively achieved? Prior to the trial, a platform level EMP hardening package was installed to evaluate the effectiveness of platform hardening techniques. Electromagnetic interference (EMI) fixes were installed when the EMI fixes were determined to provide system level hardening to emissions similar in frequency content to EMP. Temporary system level EMP hardening measures were also installed on selected combat systems and extensive pretrial EMP susceptibility assessments were performed on many of the ship systems. During the trial period, USS Deyo was subjected to over 700 sub-threat level pulses at increasing power levels. The highest test level during this trial was approximately 10dB below the EMP threat level. The induced transient currents exterior and interior to the ship and on a variety of systems were measured and used to evaluated the effectiveness of the platform hardening and system hardening. During the trial, a number of combat system operability tests were also conducted to help identify potential problem areas and evaluate system performance. This paper describes some of the events prior to and during the USS Deyo trial and the lessons learned as a result of the trial. The lessens learned from this trial will have a positive impact on future ship hardening efforts and EMP trials.

Antiferromagnet (AFM) has currently participated in the spin-orbit torque (SOT) magnetoresistive random access memory (MRAM) technolopgy due to its great potential to be applied to the field-free SOT switching and promote the thermal stability of MRAM. However, effect of the introduction of AFM into the basic structure of SOT-MRAM composed of a heavy metal/ferromagnet (FM) bilayer was still not comprehensively understood. This work reports the effect of how an antiferromagnetic (AFM) order modifies the strength of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction (DMI) in a heavy metal (Pt)/FM (Co)/AFM (IrMn) trilayer, studied by SOT switching and loop-shift method. Increasing the AFM order reflected on exchange bias (H ex ) through increasing the thickness of IrMn appears to significantly reduce the DMI strength of the trilayer, which leads to the reduction of the external field for yielding a complete SOT switching. The reduced DMI strength may ascribe to the Hex-hosted uni-directional anisotropy suppressing the neighboring spin canting in the FM layer. This stabilization for the magnetic moments via the H ex -hosted uni-directional anisotropy also improved the stability of SOT switching on the random read/write characterization, in which the strong AFM order would promote the memristivity for neuromorphic application and the weak AFM order would give rise to the stochasticity for the purpose of physically unclonable functionality. This work demonstrates the significance of an intrinsic tuning over the AFM order would serve as a switch to turn the SOT device into a stochastic/memristive cell to bridge probabilistic and neuromorphic computing.
