Given the severity of waste pollution as a major environmental concern, intelligent and sustainable waste management is becoming increasingly crucial in both developed and developing countries. The material composition and volume of urban solid waste are key considerations in processing, managing, and utilizing city waste. Deep learning technologies have emerged as viable solutions to address waste management issues by reducing labor costs and automating complex tasks. However, the limited number of trash image categories and the inadequacy of existing datasets have constrained the proper evaluation of machine learning model performance across a large number of waste classes. In this paper, we present robust waste image classification and object detection studies using deep learning models, utilizing 28 distinct recyclable categories of waste images comprising a total of 10,406 images. For the waste classification task, we proposed a novel dual-stream network that outperformed several state-of-the-art models, achieving an overall classification accuracy of 83.11%. Additionally, we introduced the GELAN-E (generalized efficient layer aggregation network) model for waste object detection tasks, obtaining a mean average precision (mAP50) of 63%, surpassing other state-of-the-art detection models. These advancements demonstrate significant progress in the field of intelligent waste management, paving the way for more efficient and effective solutions. © The Author(s) 2024.

One of the problems causing low quality of essential oils is the high content of solvent resulting from traditional extraction process employing low purity metallic components. This extracted oil therefore requires further process to improve the patchouli alcohol content of the oil by removing unwanted components. One of the process is by mixing the oil with bentonite and zeolite. In this study, a sieve shaker is designed to be used at an integrated equipment for patchouli oil refining process. In order to have a dynamically stable shaker, it is necessary to investigate the effect of various components for the stability, particularly the spring stiffness. The simulation was conducted using Autodesk Inventor using a one degree of freedom model. It is shown from the result that, for the defined condition, the sieve shaker shown a stable condition for the spring stiffness value at least 10 kN/m. Spring stiffness lower than the value could cause detachment of the roll follower from the cam, resulting in impact between the components. © 2023, The Editor(s) (if applicable) and The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

False data injection attacks (FDIAs) on smart power grids' measurement data present a threat to system stability. When malicious entities launch cyberattacks to manipulate the measurement data, different grid components will be affected, which leads to failures. For effective attack mitigation, two tasks are required: determining the status of the system (normal operation/under attack) and localizing the attacked bus/power substation. Existing mitigation techniques carry out these tasks separately and offer limited detection performance. In this paper, we propose a multi-Task learning-based approach that performs both tasks simultaneously using a graph neural network (GNN) with stacked convolutional Chebyshev graph layers. Our results show that the proposed model presents superior system status identification and attack localization abilities with detection rates of 98.5-100% and 99-100%, respectively, presenting improvements of 5-30% compared to benchmarks. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper proposes a pose estimation system for robot grasping based on a novel Object Affordance Detection and Segmentation (OADS) network. The proposed system consists of four modules: (1) OADS network;(2) point cloud extraction;(3) object pose estimation;(4) grasp pose estimation. Based on the OADS network, the proposed system achieves affordance-based object pose estimation results. The proposed grasp pose estimation system is evaluated on a laboratory-made dual-arm robot. Experimental results show that the proposed system achieves high detection rate and high accuracy in affordance detection and segmentation tasks, leading to a high success rate in object grasping tasks with lab-made dual-arm robot. © 2023 IEEE.

Majorization theoretical approach to entanglement enhancement via local filtration

From the perspective of majorization theory, we study how to enhance the entanglement of a two-mode squeezed vacuum (TMSV) state by using local filtration operations. We present several schemes achieving entanglement enhancement with photon addition and subtraction, and then consider filtration as a general probabilistic procedure consisting in acting with local (nonunitary) operators on each mode. From this, we identify a sufficient set of two conditions for these filtration operators to successfully enhance the entanglement of a TMSV state, namely, the operators must be Fock orthogonal (i.e., preserving the orthogonality of Fock states) and Fock amplifying (i.e., giving larger amplitudes to larger Fock states). Our results notably prove that ideal photon addition, subtraction, and any concatenation thereof always enhance the entanglement of a TMSV state in the sense of majorization theory. We further investigate the case of realistic photon addition (subtraction) and are able to upper bound the distance between a realistic photon-added (-subtracted) TMSV state and a nearby state that is provably more entangled than the TMSV, thus extending entanglement enhancement to practical schemes via the use of a notion of approximate majorization. Finally, we consider the state resulting from k-photon addition (on each of the two modes) on a TMSV state. We prove analytically that the state corresponding to k=1 majorizes any state corresponding to 2≤k≤8 and we conjecture the validity of the statement for all k≥9.

This paper presents a design to improve the robustness of visual SLAM(vSLAM). A processing step of feature-removal is added to the tracking thread of the conventional ORB-SLAM2 algorithm to improve the localization accuracy of a mobile robot in an environment with moving persons. Instance segmentation and motion tracking are intergrated to identify motion state of people in an image. ORB feature points belonging to moving persons are removed for further processing of the vSLAM pipeline. The advantage of this method is that the vSLAM can remove feature points of moving people, while retain those belonging to static people in the environment, which improves the accuracy of robot pose estimation. The improved ORB-SLAM2 algorithm has been implemented in a NVIDIA Xavier embedded system, which is integrated to a mobile robot. In practical robot navigation experiments, the average positioning error of the proposed method is within 4cm for 22.4m travel distance. Compared with conventional ORB-SLAM2, the average accuracy of our vSLAM method improves 97% in a dynamic environment with moving people. © 2023 IEEE.

This paper presents a programming system for a robot manipulator using a hand-held demonstration tool. In this system, a user holds the self-designed tool to demonstrate a desired motion path, and the robot arm replicates the learned trajectory. The path-demonstration tool, including optical tags (OT) and an IMU, is designed to collect trajectory data from hand motion. Sensor data fusion allows the system to track accurately the demonstrated trajectory. A calibration procedure is proposed to transform the trajectory from tool's coordinate system to robot's coordinate system. A cubic spline-based trajectory planning method is proposed to ensure smooth reproduction of the learned trajectory in both time and space. Experimental results show that the robot is able to replicate squared and curved trajectories collected from the path-demonstration tool. The average position error is within 2.435 mm in XYZ directions and the average orientation error is within 0.65 degrees. © 2024 IEEE.

Diagnosability is an important parameter to measure the fault tolerance of a multiprocessor system. If we only care about the state of a node, instead of doing the global diagnosis, Hsu and Tan proposed the idea of local diagnosis. Chiang and Tan provided an extended star structure to diagnose a node under comparison model. In this work, we evaluate the local diagnosability better by proposing a tree structure around this node. We provide the corresponding algorithm to diagnose the node. Simulation results are presented for different failure probability of a node in the tree and different percentage of faulty nodes in the tree, showing the performance of our algorithm. © 2024 Institute of Information Science. In this paper, a method using deep reinforcement learning is proposed to deal with the 3D online bin packing problem. The packing objects are not limited to several specific or fixed cuboid objects, but are composed of more than a thousand objects and randomly generated cuboids, which make the trained policy network can handle novel unknown objects. In addition, the posture of the object in the box can be any angle, not limited to horizontal and vertical. In the proposed method, four voxel maps are used as inputs, and a Soft Actor-Critic (SAC) algorithm is used to train a policy network. On the other hand, in order to deal with various objects with irregular shapes, a packing task simulator with physics engine enable the policy network to learn the state of falling and stacking objects. In terms of training environment of deep reinforcement learning, the proposed method can be applied to boxes of different sizes because of the scalable image information. Moreover, a reward function and a training strategy with gradually increasing difficulty are proposed to effectively improve the learning of policy network. In terms of experimental results, the results on a random object bin packing task in a simulator illustrate the effectiveness of the proposed method. © 2023 IEEE.
