In recent years, Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) becomes one of the most suitable solutions to fulfil world primary eco-friendly energy demand. Consequently, bunkering ship is designed to charge liquefied gas with the increasing need for natural gas. Due to the extremely dangerous and cryogenic cargo, the design of LNG bunkering ship requires very high-level structural design/analysis technologies rather than conventional ships. Therefore, this paper describes a general procedure of the structural safety assessment for the independent type C tank of LNG bunkering ship. It aims to present a complete procedure for strength evaluation of independent type C tank including hull strength assessment. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The behavior of the ship in waves should be a matter of hull optimization in order to maintain required levels of seaworthiness and operability in rough sea. Still nowadays the majority of ship motion prediction codes are based on the inviscid flow solvers;but in case of particular ship types, such as catamarans and SWATHs, the higher computational speed of these methods does not justify their inherent lack of accuracy. The paper aims to demonstrate this through a series of application examples of a new numerical method based on the unsteady solution of the Navier-Stokes equations with a mixture of fluid technique and a free surface capturing method to resolve for non-linear free surface effects. The proposed method overcomes the approximation introduced by empirical corrections factors in potential flow based solvers, allowing for accurate prediction on the real shape of the 2D hull section. The numerical method based on the the open source libraries of OpenFOAM, is used to evaluate the two dimensional radiation forces and the hydrodynamic coefficients of three different cross sections, representative of a monohull, a catamaran and a SWATH and it is validated against available experimental results also in terms of radiated wave amplitudes in the far field. The predicted viscous flow field characteristics are presented in detail in the paper, focusing the attention on the separation effects near the hulls and on the free surface breaking, especially in the inner area between the two hulls. Interesting comparison are finally drawn between the behavior of the three different cross section typologies. Copyright © 2013 by the International Society of Offshore and Polar Engineers (ISOPE).

This study proposes a model to calculate EEOI (Energy Efficiency Operational Indicator) using only public data without any actual operating data which are measured during ship operation. EEOI is usually calculated using the measured information, but since the information is not available except the ship operator, we propose a model using only public data. The public data is including AIS (Automatic Identification System) data and marine environment data. Since the public data mentioned above have a large capacity, it is difficult to estimate the energy efficiency by existing data processing method. Therefore, in this study, big data technology was studied and applied to utilize the large capacity of public data effectively. The proposed model was applied to the example ship to estimate the ship energy efficiency indicator, and the effectiveness of the model was evaluated by comparing the actual results. Certain ships are built with capability to survive in voyage through the North Sea Route. However, non-ice class ship especially tankers should be given adequate attention accounting for its behavior when accidental loads are experienced, e.g. stranding. Aim of this paper is to estimate structural behavior of a non-ice class tanker during stranding. Failure and damage extent of the ship were assessed to provide reference data regarding countermeasure and casualty estimations for further study. In this study, a chemical tanker was modelled to be the target ship in a series of stranding scenario model. Condition of the structural damage and tendency of crashworthiness criteria, namely: rupture energy, crushing force and structural acceleration were observed. The results indicated that the lateral impact was capable to produce higher extent of damage on the bottom structure than the frontal impact. Finally, recommendation of the ice class material’s application on marine structures is summarized. © 2018 Taylor & Francis Group, London.

Mapping of underwater environments is a critical task for a range of activities from monitoring coral reef habitats to surveying submerged archaeological sites. While recent advances in methods for terrestrial mapping can achieve dense 3D reconstructions of scenes in real-time, there remains the challenge of transferring these methods to the underwater domain due to characteristic effects on propagation of light through the water column that violate the brightness constancy constraint used in terrestrial techniques. Current state-of-the-art methods for underwater 3D reconstruction exploit a physical model of light propagation underwater to account for such range-dependent effects as scattering and attenuation;however, these methods necessitate careful calibration of attenuation coefficients required by the physical model, or rely on rough estimates of these coefficients from prior lab experiments. The main contribution of this paper is to develop a novel method to achieve simultaneous estimation of attenuation coefficients for color correction during structure recovery of an underwater scene by integrating this estimation directly into the bundle adjustment step, which performs non-linear optimization. To validate the proposed method, an artificial scene is submerged in a pure water tank and surveyed with a stereo camera platform to simulate an underwater robotic survey in a controlled environment. The target structure is imaged in air with an RGB-D sensor to provide ground truth structure and color, and a color calibration board is place in the scene for further reference. Results show that the proposed method can automatically estimate a water-column aware model for color correction of underwater images simultaneously to 3D reconstruction of the submerged scene. © 2017 IEEE.

Demand to increase safety for water transportation, namely ship is continuously rising as various accidental loads may threat condition of target structure, i.e. ship. Several possibilities of impact scenario can occur with various indenters, for example stranding to a grounded ice. In this work, a study of structural behaviour accounting for interaction between the ship structure and indenter is conducted. Numerical simulation is performed using finite element method to estimate damage extent of the double bottom. In analysis, the indenter for grounding scenario is applied by characteristic of the ice properties to obtain estimated response of the structure in experiencing impact on polar territory. Impact scenario is defined into three different locations, namely girder and space between two girders. Finally, tendency of the damage per destroyed component is summarized. © 2017 Trans Tech Publications, Switzerland.

This study presents results of an experimental study on three-dimensional sloshing phenomenon. The experimental facility used in this study was driven by six 15kw electric motors. The maximum load including dynamic load for this platform was estimated 4 tons. Six degrees of freedom of ship motion can be simulated with this platform. The 1/70 model of a 138,000 m3 LNG carrier was used to get the results. Single and coupled motion tests were carried out. The 17 pressure gauges were installed on the model. Each test was lasted for 5 minutes. The maximum pressure, mean pressure, the mean of 1/10 highest pressure, and the mean of 1/3 highest pressure for 17 locations were presented in this paper. The experimental results showed that this sloshing platform is very reliable to get the desired data for design of LNG carriers.

The LNG (Liquefied Natural Gas) fueled ship is one of the solution to solve the emission of SOx and NOx in conventional maritime fuel. Despite the advantages, the LNG fuel is more dangerous due to their low flash point. The leakage of gas fuel is one of the threat of LNG-fueled vessel, due to its explosive characteristic. This study aims to establish the exclusion zone due to LNG dispersion. The analysis contained the potential leakage and gas dispersion along to the exposed area. A verified Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) analysis based on the time accuracy assumption using KFX software was performed to simulate the dynamic behavior of the vapor dispersion. The scenarios were categorized by the leak size, leak location, and mass flow rate. The required environment parameters, e.g., wind speed and wind directions were also considered. It is found that the behavior of dispersed vapor was strongly depending on the leak location and mass flow rate. Surprisingly, the environment parameter has slightly affected the distance of the vapor dispersion. According to these findings, to deliver risk mitigation in a gas leakage accident, the exclusion zone was provided. © 2020, Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

This paper proposes a method for automating detection and segmentation of archaeological structures in underwater environments. Underwater archaeologists have recently taken advantage of robotic or diver-operated stereo-vision platforms to survey and map submerged archaeological sites. From the acquired stereo images, 3D reconstruction can be performed to produce high-resolution photo-mosaic maps that are metrically accurate and contain information about depth. Archaeologists can then use these maps to manually outline or sketch features of interest, such as building plans of a submerged city. These features often contain large rocks that serve as the foundation to buildings and are arranged in patterns and geometric shapes that are characteristic of human-made structures. Our proposed method first detects these large rocks based on texture and depth information. Next, we exploit the characteristic geometry of human-made structures to identify foundation rocks arranged along lines to form walls. Then we propose to optimize the outlines of these walls by using the gradient of depth to seek the local minimum of the height from the seafloor to identify the ground plane at the base of the rocks. Finally, we output contours as geo-referenced layers for geographic information system (GIS) and architectural planning software. Experiments are based on a 2010 stereo reconstruction survey of Pavlopetri, a submerged city off the coast of Greece. The results provide a proof-of-concept for automating extraction of archaeological structure in underwater environments to produce geo-referenced contours for further analysis by underwater archaeologists.
