Prescriptive analytics plays a vital role in decision making processes in smart factories by leveraging available data to provide actionable insights. Time-sensitive decisions related to maintenance, product quality, processes and production management require cost efficient solutions. However, the lack of a comprehensive conceptual framework poses challenges in implementing effective prescriptive analytics solutions. The framework shall serve as a baseline to describe and differentiate modular prescriptive analytics approaches. In this paper, we introduce a four-step prescriptive analytics conceptual framework, which facilitates the development and deployment of prescriptive models in smart factories. Additionally, we emphasize the existing gap between prescriptive analytics and decision theory in the current state of the art. Decision theory already provides sophisticated human centric approaches that can be transferred to the data driven approaches that are part of prescriptive analytics. The conceptual prescriptive analytics framework is derived from real world use cases in smart factories, decision theory frameworks and requirements from literature. We discuss the key components and considerations for each step and highlight their interdependencies in a smart factory environment. Our main contribution is a conceptual framework which enables practitioners and researchers to develop modular and efficient prescriptive analytics implementations for smart factories. We advise practitioners to focus on creating data driven decisions and using the framework as a reference for implementation. © 2023 IEEE.

Generalization is a key property of machine learning models to perform accurately on unseen data. Conversely, in the field of scientific machine learning (SciML), generalization entails not only predictive accuracy but also the capacity of the model to encapsulate underlying physical principles. In this paper, we delve into the concept of generalization for Physics-informed neural networks (PINNs) by investigating the consistency of the predictions of a PINN outside of its training domain. Through the lenses of a novel metric and statistical analysis, we study the scenarios in which a PINN can provide consistent predictions outside the region considered for training and hereinafter assess whether the algorithmic setup of the model can influence its potential for generalizing. Our results highlight why overparametrization is not a crucial component in SciML while encouraging overfitting on the training data. Despite being counterintuitive, the outcome of our analysis serves as a guideline for training PINNs for engineering applications. © The Author(s) 2024.

Machine Learning Models for Early Prediction of COVID-19 Infections Based on Clinical Signs

Nowadays, the appearance of common symptoms, such as cough, fever, and loss of smell and taste, is the starting point of a battle against the coronavirus. The first standard method of COVID-19 infection assertion has become the RT-PCR test, which is however an uncomfortable solution for both patients and medical staff due to its high cost, timeliness, and false-negative result issue. This has raised the need for reliable automatic detection systems that aid in the early prediction of the COVID-19 infections with a lower cost. In this work, we aim at profiting from the Machine Learning (ML) advances to provide a reliable and low-cost COVID-19 prediction system. This system is based on the disease starting point, which is the patients’ clinical symptoms, that are still under-explored. We developed seven predictive models using traditional ML classification algorithms using a public dataset of obvious high-risk factors from patients’ clinical signs. The dataset has first undergone a pre-processing phase consisting of feature engineering and dataset resampling to deal with imbalanced dataset issue. Our best classification model is able to detect true positives and true negatives and weed out false positive and false negatives with an accuracy of 93%. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

In this paper,we provide some gentle introductions to the recent advance in augmented Lagrangian methods for solving large-scale convex matrix optimization problems(cMOP).Specifically,we reviewed two types of sufficient conditions for ensuring the quadratic growth conditions of a class of constrained convex matrix optimization problems regularized by nonsmooth spectral *** a mild quadratic growth condition on the dual of cMOP,we further discussed the R-superlinear convergence of the Karush-Kuhn-Tucker(KKT)residuals of the sequence generated by the augmented Lagrangian methods(ALM)for solving convex matrix optimization *** details of the ALM for solving core convex matrix optimization problems are also provided.

The emerging trend of Prescriptive Analytics tries to prescribe actionable decisions. The goal is to help production experts in automating their decisions in the factory. Decision making processes in factories mostly rely on experts inside the company. Current trends such as demographic shifts and shortages of skilled personnel are challenging organizations to find ways to become less dependent on the ad hoc availability of expert knowledge through digitalization and data analytics. Existing data analytics approaches for smart factories usually focus on description, diagnosis, and prediction. An approach to differentiate between different application areas of Prescriptive Analytics in a smart factory is presented. Focus areas for a useful application and integration of Prescriptive Analytics are derived. Based on these applications, design principles are constructed. They help decision makers to select future lighthouse use cases for development and help smart factory advocates to strategically decide which prescriptive analytics approaches to highlight. The resulting design principles are based on a literature review and validated in a workshop with experts from research. Approaches are differentiated and key characteristics for future Use Case design decisions are derived. © 2024 Elsevier B.V.. All rights reserved.

Malware detection plays a crucial role in ensuring robust cybersecurity amidst the ever-evolving cyber threats. This research paper delves into the realm of machine learning (ML) algorithms for malware detection, with a specific emphasis on the K-Nearest Neighbors (KNN) algorithm, utilizing tailored parameter settings and the Firefly Optimization Algorithm (FOA). The study leverages the MalMem-2022 dataset to assess the efficacy of KNN and KNN with FOA in malware detection. The impact of parameter tuning and feature selection on classification is elucidated by comparing the performance of both approaches. Encouragingly, the results reveal promising advancements in one of the multiclass classification scenarios when employing KNN with FOA, yielding noteworthy enhancements in Accuracy, Recall, Precision, Matthews Correlation Coefficient, TNR, and F1-score by 2.65%, 2.65%, 2.47%, 3.59%, 0.17%, and 2.61%, respectively. These findings accentuate the significance of optimizing KNN’s parameters and implementing FOA for feature selection, culminating in heightened accuracy in malware detection. The symbiotic fusion of KNN and FOA exhibits remarkable effectiveness in augmenting the classification model’s performance, thus offering valuable insights for bolstering cybersecurity measures. Adopting ML algorithms, particularly KNN with specific parameter settings and FOA, presents a promising avenue for enhancing malware detection capabilities. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer science+Business Media, LLC, part of Springer Nature 2024.

This study proposes a new prairie dog optimization algorithm version called EPDO. This new version aims to address the issues of premature convergence and slow convergence that were observed in the original PDO algorithm. To improve performance, several modifications are introduced in EPDO. First, a dynamic opposite learning strategy is employed to increase the diversity of the population and prevent premature convergence. This strategy helps the algorithm avoid falling into local optima and promotes global optimization. Additionally, the Lévy dynamic random walk technique is utilized in EPDO. This modified Lévy flight with random walk reduces the algorithm’s running time for the test function’s ideal value, accelerating its convergence. The proposed approach is evaluated using 33 benchmark problems from CEC 2017 and compared against seven other comparative techniques: GWO, MFO, ALO, WOA, DA, SCA, and RSA. Numerical results demonstrate that EPDO produces good outcomes and performs well in solving benchmark problems. To further validate the results and assess reliability, the authors employ average rank tests, the measurement of alternatives, and ranking according to the compromise solution (MARCOS) method, as well as a convergence report of EPDO and other algorithms. Furthermore, the effectiveness of the EPDO algorithm is demonstrated by applying it to five design problems. The results indicate that EPDO achieves impressive outcomes and proves its capability to address practical issues. The algorithm performs well in solving benchmark and practical design problems, as supported by the numerical results and validation methods used in the study. © The Author(s) 2024.

This paper proposes a modified version of the Dwarf Mongoose Optimization Algorithm (IDMO) for constrained engineering design problems. This optimization technique modifies the base algorithm (DMO) in three simple but effective ways. First, the alpha selection in IDMO differs from the DMO, where evaluating the probability value of each fitness is just a computational overhead and contributes nothing to the quality of the alpha or other group members. The fittest dwarf mongoose is selected as the alpha, and a new operator ω is introduced, which controls the alpha movement, thereby enhancing the exploration ability and exploitability of the IDMO. Second, the scout group movements are modified by randomization to introduce diversity in the search process and explore unvisited areas. Finally, the babysitter's exchange criterium is modified such that once the criterium is met, the babysitters that are exchanged interact with the dwarf mongoose exchanging them to gain information about food sources and sleeping mounds, which could result in better-fitted mongooses instead of initializing them afresh as done in DMO, then the counter is reset to zero. The proposed IDMO was used to solve the classical and CEC 2020 benchmark functions and 12 continuous/discrete engineering optimization problems. The performance of the IDMO, using different performance metrics and statistical analysis, is compared with the DMO and eight other existing algorithms. In most cases, the results show that solutions achieved by the IDMO are better than those obtained by the existing algorithms.
