Prescriptive analytics plays a vital role in decision making processes in smart factories by leveraging available data to provide actionable insights. Time-sensitive decisions related to maintenance, product quality, processes and production management require cost efficient solutions. However, the lack of a comprehensive conceptual framework poses challenges in implementing effective prescriptive analytics solutions. The framework shall serve as a baseline to describe and differentiate modular prescriptive analytics approaches. In this paper, we introduce a four-step prescriptive analytics conceptual framework, which facilitates the development and deployment of prescriptive models in smart factories. Additionally, we emphasize the existing gap between prescriptive analytics and decision theory in the current state of the art. Decision theory already provides sophisticated human centric approaches that can be transferred to the data driven approaches that are part of prescriptive analytics. The conceptual prescriptive analytics framework is derived from real world use cases in smart factories, decision theory frameworks and requirements from literature. We discuss the key components and considerations for each step and highlight their interdependencies in a smart factory environment. Our main contribution is a conceptual framework which enables practitioners and researchers to develop modular and efficient prescriptive analytics implementations for smart factories. We advise practitioners to focus on creating data driven decisions and using the framework as a reference for implementation.

Unraveling cell-cell communication with NicheNet by inferring active ligands from transcriptomics data

Ligand-receptor interactions constitute a fundamental mechanism of cell-cell communication and signaling. NicheNet is a well-established computational tool that infers ligand-receptor interactions that potentially regulate gene expression changes in receiver cell populations. Whereas the original publication delves into the algorithm and validation, this paper describes a best practices workflow cultivated over four years of experience and user feedback. Starting from the input single-cell expression matrix, we describe a "sender-agnostic" approach which considers ligands from the entire microenvironment, and a "sender-focused" approach which only considers ligands from cell populations of interest. As output, users will obtain a list of prioritized ligands and their potential target genes, along with multiple visualizations. In NicheNet v2, we have updated the data sources and implemented a downstream procedure for prioritizing cell-type-specific ligand-receptor pairs. Although a standard NicheNet analysis takes less than 10 minutes to run, users often invest additional time in making decisions about the approach and parameters that best suit their biological question. This paper serves to aid in this decision-making process by describing the most appropriate workflow for common experimental designs like case-control and cell differentiation studies. Finally, in addition to the step-by-step description of the code, we also provide wrapper functions that enable the analysis to be run in one line of code, thus tailoring the workflow to users at all levels of computational proficiency. © 2024, CC BY-NC-SA.

This article describes analytical work carried out in a pilot project for the Swedish Space data Lab (SSDL), which focused on monitoring drought in the Mälardalen region in central Sweden. Normalized Difference Vegetation Index (NDVI) and the Moisture Stress Index (MSI)-commonly used to analyse drought- A re estimated from Sentinel 2 satellite data and averaged over a selection of seven grassland areas of interest. To derive a complete time-series over a season that interpolates over days with missing data, we use Gaussian Process Regression, a technique from multivariate Bayesian analysis. The analysis show significant differences at 95% confidence for five out of seven areas when comparing the peak drought period in the dry year 2018 compared to the corresponding period in 2019. A cross-validation analysis indicates that the model parameter estimates are robust for temporal covariance structure (while inconclusive for the spatial dimensions). There were no signs of over-fitting when comparing in-sample and out-of-sample RMSE. © 2020 IEEE.

The epidemiological characteristics and distributions of two epidemics in Fujian Province of Southeast China were attributed to the complex interactions among variant,host,and non-pharmaceutical interventions(NPIs).All reported cases in the Putian epidemic(September 8–October 2,2021,Delta variant B.1.617.2)and Fuzhou epidemic(October 22–November 18,2022,Omicron variant BA.5.2)were classified by sex,age group,occupation,and location in this *** surveillance data from the Fujian Provincial center for Disease Control and Prevention,we established a virus-oriented SVEIR(Susceptible–Vaccinated–Exposed–Infected–Recovered)model to investigate the dynamic evolution features of these two variants and the effects of *** optimal simulations were carried out with variants and scenario *** scenario investigations showed that NPIs significantly reduced the transmission risk and infection scales of COVID-19,and that the Omicron variant was more infectious than the Delta ***,the dynamic investigations revealed the increasing tendencies from Delta to Omicron,such as the basic reproduction number,infection rate,percentage of high-risk cases,and the growth *** tendencies were also identified,such as the average recovery period,the awareness delay,and the percentage of symptomatic *** study highlighted that NPIs played critical roles in successfully containing the two *** interventions are strongly recommended to public health policymakers.

As the mobile ad hoc networks infrastructure has no centralized points of connections, the traffic from a source to a destination passes through number of intermediate nodes. When more than one neighbor node is available, the traffic passes through one of them based on some criteria. If a node behaves maliciously in all of the connections and drops the traffic, it creates a security blackhole, while a malicious node that behaves normally is some of the connections creates a security grayhole. Since the malicious node behaves normally in some connections, mitigating this attack is challenging. In this paper, we proposed 3L-AODV, a security protocol that uses three layers of protection and detection to mitigate the grayhole attack. As it does not require any modification on the AODV protocol, it can be implemented on any network that its routing is based on AODV. The analysis of our results shows that 3L-AODV could mitigate the grayhole attack without affecting the performance of the network. © 2024, The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd.

The implementation of titanium dioxide (TiO2) as a photocatalyst material in hydrogen (H2) evolution reaction (HER) has embarked renewed interest in the past decade. Rapid electron-hole pairs recombination and wide band gap of a photo-sensitive material of TiO2 are detrimental toward the targeted catalytical reaction. In this study, we present the rational design, fabrication, photocatalytic performance of TiO2-Cu/CuO/Cu2O heterostructures (CuTi) using viable chemical reduction method. The Z-scheme and S-scheme are succesfully generated across the TiO2/CuO/Cu2O interfaces, while the Schottky junction arises on the Cu perimeters. This is evidenced from the blue shifted about 0.3 eV of Cu 2p core level determined by using X-ray photoemission spectroscopy (XPS), in combination with the formation of inverse V-shape of the Mott-Schottky plots. In addition, we find that Cu/CuO/Cu2O facilitates photon absorption range up to the visible region. The multiple heterojunction and the large number of OHsurface enhanced charge carrier transfer are associated to the suppression of photoluminescence (PL) intensity, high surface hydroxyl (OHsurface) density in CuTi probed by XPS, and fast electron transfer based on the electrochemical measurements. The presence of OHsurface inhibits the recombination of electron. A significant H2 photogeneration rate enhancement is achieved when an optimized 5 wt% Cu/CuO/Cu2O concentration is used on TiO2 to achieve 7,157.19 μmol·g−1 (1,789.30 μmol·g−1·h−1). Based on this finding, zero emission energy innitiative could be materialized under multiple heterojunctions in photocatalytic process is beneficial for enhancing the H2 production. © 2025 The Authors

Vapor Pressure Deficit (VPD) is crucial in meteorology and agriculture for understanding plant-environment interactions. Its application as an indicator in agricultural practices notably advances Sustainable Development Goals such as Zero Hunger (SDG 2) and Climate Action (SDG 13). This research focuses on the impact of climate change on agricultural productivity and food security in the Nile River Basin (NRB), emphasizing the role of VPD, temperature, and precipitation. Utilizing Coupled Model Intercomparison Project Phase 6 (CMIP6) datasets from NEX-GDDP-CMIP6, the study analyzes key climatic variables that influence agricultural conditions. The study applies the Mann-Kendall test to evaluate VPD trends from 2000 to 2060 under two Shared Socioeconomic Pathways (SSPs), SSP2-4.5 and SSP5-8.5. The study's findings on the implications of rising VPD levels in the Nile River Basin (NRB), particularly under the SSP 5-8.5 scenario, highlight a critical challenge for the region's agricultural productivity and food security. The increased VPD, indicative of drier conditions, leads to a moisture deficit for crops, potentially reducing agricultural yields. This scenario poses a significant threat to food security, as lower crop yields can result in food shortages and higher food prices, adversely affecting vulnerable populations. The study underscores the necessity of integrating VPD insights into agricultural and water resource management strategies to uphold food security against climatic variations in support of the SDGs.

We propose a novel approach to cervical cell image classification for cervical cancer screening using the EVA-02 transformer model. We developed a four-step pipeline: fine-tuning EVA-02, feature extraction, selecting important features through multiple machine learning models, and training a new artificial neural network with optional loss weighting for improved generalization. With this design, our best model achieved an F1-score of 0.85227, outperforming the baseline EVA-02 model (0.84878). We also utilized Kernel SHAP analysis and identified key features correlating with cell morphology and staining characteristics, providing interpretable insights into the decision-making process of the fine-tuned model. The aim of this study is to explore nurse activities leading to high cognitive stress for intensive care unit (ICU) nurses. The quantification of stress-related nurse activities has been acquired before and after the working shift, with a general gap in analyzing the whole shift. To address this gap, the task analysis of stress-related nurse activities during whole shift was conducted for two participants. The administration tasks (processing clinical data, exchanging professional information and ordering examination), and communicating with patients were most performed when under high cognitive stress. Future work should investigate the contribution of administration and patient-related tasks to high cognitive stress for ICU nurses.
