automating decision-making on a wide range of aspects are affecting humanity. There is great promise in machine learning (ML) and artificial intelligence (AI) algorithms for assisting with predicted and automated decision-making and transforming both societies and industries to improve African citizens' everyday lives. In a business context, platforms such as cloud computing can benefit a lot from AI and ML. Prediction models could be developed to predict the traffic flow of cloud computing resources, which could ease traffic flow. Although AI and ML cloud computing are powerful and vital, they are unfortunately not immune from ethical challenges. As well as improving the allocation of cloud computing resources with prediction models. In recent years, despite AI’s powerful performance, in order to conduct responsible AI and ML modeling, it is important not to ignore ethical issues that might need serious investigation, particularly if human and classified data are concerned. In this regard, the objective of this paper is to determine the prevalence of AI and ML ethics research in Africa. In this paper, RStudio and the computing-related databases (IEEE Xplore, Web of service and Scopus) were used to conduct a bibliometric analysis on the prevalence of AI and ML ethics that relate to the cloud computing environment. The scope was minimized due to its prevalence in the African context. The findings show that AI and ML ethics are understudied on the African continent compared to the West. In this regard, there is a need to conduct more AI and ML ethics-related research in Africa because failure to do so will result in the West shaping the ethical discussion in areas of importance for African development, such as cloud computing. The latter will allow the West to slowly impose its perspective without considering African perspectives. Neural Vector Search (NVS) has exhibited superior search quality over traditional key-based strategies for information retrieval tasks. An effective NVS architecture requires high recall, low latency, and high throughput to enhance user experience and cost-efficiency. However, implementing NVS on existing neural network accelerators and vector search accelerators is sub-optimal due to the separation between the embedding stage and vector search stage at both algorithm and architecture levels. Fortunately, we unveil that Product Quantization (PQ) opens up an opportunity to break separation. However, existing PQ algorithms and accelerators still focus on either the embedding stage or the vector search stage, rather than both simultaneously. Simply combining existing solutions still follows the beaten track of separation and suffers from insufficient parallelization, frequent data access conflicts, and the absence of scheduling, thus failing to reach optimal recall, latency, and throughput. To this end, we propose a unified and efficient NVS accelerator dubbed NeuVSA based on algorithm and architecture co-design philosophy. Specifically, on the algorithm level, we propose a learned PQ-based unified NVS algorithm that consolidates two separate stages into the same computing and memory access paradigm. It integrates an end-to-end joint training strategy to learn the optimal codebook and index for enhanced recall and reduced PQ complexity, thus achieving smoother acceleration. On the architecture level, we customize a homogeneous NVS accelerator based on the unified NVS algorithm. Each sub-accelerator is optimized to exploit all parallelism exposed by unified NVS, incorporating a structured index assignment strategy and an elastic on-chip buffer to alleviate buffer conflicts for reduced latency. The graph regularized nonnegative matrix factorization (GNMF) algorithms have received a lot of attention in the field of machine learning and data mining, as well as the square loss method is commonly used to measure the quality of reconstructed data. However, noise is introduced when data reconstruction is performed;and the square loss method is sensitive to noise, which leads to degradation in the performance of data analysis tasks. To solve this problem, a novel graph regularized sparse NMF (GSNMF) is proposed in this article. To obtain a cleaner data matrix to approximate the high-dimensional matrix, the l1-norm to the low-dimensional matrix is added to achieve the adjustment of data eigenvalues in the matrix and sparsity constraint. In addition, the corresponding inference and alternating iterative update algorithm to solve the optimization problem are given. Then, an extension of GSNMF, namely, graph regularized sparse nonnegative matrix trifactorization (GSNMTF), is proposed, and the detailed inference procedure is also shown. Finally, the experimental results on eight different datasets demonstrate that the proposed model has a good performance. © 2014 IEEE.

Extracting buildings from remote sensing images using deep learning techniques is a widely applied and crucial task. Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) adopt hierarchical feature representation, showcasing powerful capabilities in extracting local information but facing challenges in capturing global features. Transformers can address this limitation, but they perform poorly in extracting local features and significantly increase memory requirements and computational complexity. To overcome these challenges, we propose a method for building extraction from remote sensing images called LGDB-Net (Local-Global Dual-Branch Network), employing a dual-branch approach. Firstly, inspired by Swin Transformer, we designed GB-Former(Global Branch-Former) as the backbone network to model global information. We use a linear multi-head self-attention mechanism to reduce time and memory complexity while maintaining a large global receptive field. Additionally, we replace the traditional multi-layer perceptron with a convolution-enhanced multi-layer perceptron to improve channel feature representation, reduce model parameters, and enhance segmentation performance. Secondly, we use multiple Depth-wise Conv3×3 + LN (Layer Normalization) + GeLU (Gaussian Error Linear unit) modules as the auxiliary branch for local detailed feature extraction. Finally, we adopt a multi-scale feature fusion strategy to integrate feature information from both branches. We conduct a series of experiments on three datasets: WHU, Massachusetts, and Inria. The experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method not only effectively improves segmentation accuracy with lower building omission and commission rates but also significantly reduces model parameters and computational complexity. © 2024 IEEE.

Existing methods for modeling recommendation systems based on knowledge graphs include embedding-based, pathbased, and propagation-based methods. The embedding-based approach is flexible but more suitable for intra-graph applications, the path-based approach can model complex relationships but has a high computational cost, and the propagation-based approach considers global information but may introduce noise. This study proposed a simple and efficient model, called SEKGAT, which comprehensive the ideology of path-based and propagation approach to personalized recommendation by aggregating the user preferences through graph attention mechanism and fusing multiple feature representations on the knowledge graph into item features through pooling aggregators. Experimental results for the CTR prediction and Top-K recommendation tasks on three datasets of real-world scenarios show that our model approach is competitive. © 2023 IEEE.

XRL-SHAP-Cache:an explainable reinforcement learning approach for intelligent edge service caching in content delivery networks

Content delivery networks(CDNs) play a pivotal role in the modern internet infrastructure by enabling efficient content delivery across diverse geographical regions. As an essential component of CDNs, the edge caching scheme directly influences the user experience by determining the caching and eviction of content on edge servers. With the emergence of 5G technology, traditional caching schemes have faced challenges in adapting to increasingly complex and dynamic network environments. Consequently, deep reinforcement learning(DRL) offers a promising solution for intelligent zero-touch network governance. However, the blackbox nature of DRL models poses challenges in understanding and making trusting decisions. In this paper,we propose an explainable reinforcement learning(XRL)-based intelligent edge service caching approach,namely XRL-SHAP-Cache, which combines DRL with an explainable artificial intelligence(XAI) technique for cache management in CDNs. Instead of focusing solely on achieving performance gains, this study introduces a novel paradigm for providing interpretable caching strategies, thereby establishing a foundation for future transparent and trustworthy edge caching solutions. Specifically, a multi-level cache scheduling framework for CDNs was formulated theoretically, with the D3QN-based caching scheme serving as the targeted interpretable model. Subsequently, by integrating Deep-SHAP into our framework, the contribution of each state input feature to the agent's Q-value output was calculated, thereby providing valuable insights into the decision-making process. This study investigated the predictive ability of ten different machine learning (ML) models for diabetes using a dataset that was not evenly distributed. Additionally, the study evaluated the effectiveness of two oversampling and undersampling methods, namely the Synthetic Minority Oversampling Technique (SMOTE) and the Near-Miss algorithm. Explainable Artificial Intelligence (XAI) techniques were employed to enhance the interpretability of the model's predictions. The results indicate that the extreme gradient boosting (XGB) model combined with SMOTE oversampling technique exhibited the highest accuracy and an F1-score of 99% and 1.00 respectively. Furthermore, the utilization of XAI methods increased the dependability of the model's decision-making process, rendering it more appropriate for clinical use. These results imply that integrating XAI with ML and oversampling techniques can enhance the early detection and management of diabetes, leading to better diagnosis and intervention. © 2023 IEEE.

Training machine learning (ML) models on mobile and Web-of-Things (WoT) has been widely acknowledged and employed as a promising solution to privacy-preserving ML. However, these end-devices often suffer from constrained resources and fail to accommodate increasingly large ML models that crave great computation power. Offloading ML models partially to the cloud for training strikes a trade-off between privacy preservation and resource requirements. However, device-cloud training creates communication overheads that delay model training tremendously. This paper presents EdgeMove, the first device-edge training scheme that enables fast pipelined model training across edge devices and edge servers. It employs probing-based mechanisms to tackle the new challenges raised by device-edge training. Before training begins, it probes nearby edge servers' training performance and bootstraps model training by constructing a training pipeline with an approximate model partitioning. During the training process, EdgeMove accommodates user mobility and system dynamics by probing nearby edge servers' training performance adaptively and adapting the training pipeline proactively. Extensive experiments are conducted with two popular DNN models trained on four datasets for three ML tasks. The results demonstrate that EdgeMove achieves a 1.3 × -2.1 × speedup over the state-of-the-art scheme. © 2023 ACM.
