To investigate the genetic basis of type 2 diabetes (T2D) to high resolution, the GoT2D and T2D-GENES consortia catalogued variation from whole-genome sequencing of 2,657 European individuals and exome sequencing of 12,940 individuals of multiple ancestries. Over 27M SNPs, indels, and structural variants were identified, including 99% of low-frequency (minor allele frequency [MAF] 0.1-5%) non-coding variants in the whole-genome sequenced individuals and 99.7% of low-frequency coding variants in the whole-exome sequenced individuals. Each variant was tested for association with T2D in the sequenced individuals, and, to increase power, most were tested in larger numbers of individuals (>80% of low-frequency coding variants in ~82 K Europeans via the exome chip, and ~90% of low-frequency non-coding variants in ~44 K Europeans via genotype imputation). The variants, genotypes, and association statistics from these analyses provide the largest reference to date of human genetic information relevant to T2D, for use in activities such as T2D-focused genotype imputation, functional characterization of variants or genes, and other novel analyses to detect associations between sequence variation and T2D.

Management of data to produce scientific knowledge is a key challenge for biological research in the 21st century. Emerging high-throughput technologies allow life science researchers to produce big data at speeds and in amounts that were unthinkable just a few years ago. This places high demands on all aspects of the workflow: from data capture (including the experimental constraints of the experiment), analysis and preservation, to peer-reviewed publication of results. Failure to recognise the issues at each level can lead to serious conflicts and mistakes;research may then be compromised as a result of the publication of non-coherent protocols, or the misinterpretation of published data. In this report, we present the results from a workshop that was organised to create an ontological data-modelling framework for Laboratory Protocol Standards for the Molecular Methods database (MolMeth). The workshop provided a set of short- and long-term goals for the MolMeth database, the most important being the decision to use the established EXACT description of biomedical ontologies as a starting point. © 2012.

The primitive of proxy signatures allows the original signer to delegate proxy signers to sign on messages on behalf of the original signer. It has found numerous applications in distributed computing scenarios where delegation of signing rights is common. Certificate less public key cryptography eliminates the complicated certificates in traditional public key cryptosystems without suffering from the key escrow problem in identity-based public key cryptography. In this paper, we reveal the relationship between the two important primitives of proxy signatures and certificate less signatures and present a generic conversion from the latter to the former. Following the generic transformation, we propose an efficient proxy signature scheme with a recent certificate less signature scheme.

3D virtual reality, including the current generation of multi-user virtual worlds, has had a long history of use in education and training, and it experienced a surge of renewed interest with the advent of Second Life in 2003. What followed shortly after were several years marked by considerable hype around the use of virtual worlds for teaching, learning and research in higher education. For the moment, uptake of the technology seems to have plateaued, with academics either maintaining the status quo and continuing to use virtual worlds as they have previously done or choosing to opt out altogether. This paper presents a brief review of the use of virtual worlds in the Australian and New Zealand higher education sector in the past and reports on its use in the sector at the present time, based on input from members of the Australian and New Zealand Virtual Worlds Working Group. It then adopts a forward-looking perspective amid the current climate of uncertainty, musing on future directions and offering suggestions for potential new applications in light of recent technological developments and innovations in the area. © 2013 Sue Gregory.

This paper develops a novel approach for multitarget tracking, called box-particle probability hypothesis density filter (box-PHD filter). The approach is able to track multiple targets and estimates the unknown number of targets. Furthermore, it is capable to deal with three sources of uncertainty: stochastic, set-theoretic and data association uncertainty. The box-PHD filter reduces the number of particles significantly, which improves the runtime considerably. The small particle number makes this approach attractive for distributed computing. A box-particle is a random sample that occupies a small and controllable rectangular region of non-zero volume. Manipulation of boxes utilizes methods from the field of interval analysis. The theoretical derivation of the box-PHD filter is presented followed by a comparative analysis with a standard sequential Monte Carlo (SMC) version of the PHD filter. To measure the performance objectively three measures are used: inclusion, volume and the optimum subpattern assignment metric. Our studies suggest that the box-PHD filter reaches similar accuracy results, like a SMC-PHD filter but with much considerably less computational costs. Furthermore, we can show that in the presence of strongly biased measurement the box-PHD filter even outperforms the classical SMC-PHD filter. © 2012 ISIF (Intl Society of information Fusi).
