Reconstructing perceived images from human brain activity forms a crucial link between human and machine learning through Brain-computer Interfaces. Early methods primarily focused on training separate models for each individual to account for individual variability in brain activity, overlooking valuable cross-subject commonalities. Recent advancements have explored multisubject methods, but these approaches face significant challenges, particularly in data privacy and effectively managing individual variability. To overcome these challenges, we introduce BRAINGUARD, a privacy-preserving collaborative training framework designed to enhance image reconstruction from multisubject fMRI data while safeguarding individual privacy. BRAINGUARD employs a collaborative global-local architecture where individual models are trained on each subject’s local data and operate in conjunction with a shared global model that captures and leverages cross-subject patterns. This architecture eliminates the need to aggregate fMRI data across subjects, thereby ensuring privacy preservation. To tackle the complexity of fMRI data, BRAINGUARD integrates a hybrid synchronization strategy, enabling individual models to dynamically incorporate parameters from the global model. By establishing a secure and collaborative training environment, BRAINGUARD not only protects sensitive brain data but also improves the image reconstructions accuracy. Extensive experiments demonstrate that BRAINGUARD sets a new benchmark in both high-level and low-level metrics, advancing the state-of-the-art in brain decoding through its innovative design. © 2025, CC BY.

Instant delivery has become a fundamental service in people's daily lives. Different from the traditional express service, the instant delivery has a strict shipping time constraint after being ordered. However, the labor shortage makes it challenging to realize efficient instant delivery. To tackle the problem, researchers have studied to introduce vehicles (i.e., taxis) or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs or drones) into instant delivery tasks. Unfortunately, the delivery detour of taxis and the limited battery of UAVs make it hard to meet the rapidly increasing instant delivery demands. Under this circumstance, this paper proposes an air-ground cooperative instant delivery paradigm to maximize the delivery performance and meanwhile minimize the negative effects on the taxi passengers. Specifically, a data-driven delivery potential-demands-aware cooperative strategy is designed to improve the overall delivery performance of both UAVs and taxis as well as the taxi passengers' experience. The experimental results show that the proposed method improves the delivery number by 30.1% and 114.5% compared to the taxi-based and UAV-based instant delivery respectively, and shortens the delivery time by 35.7% compared to the taxi-based instant delivery. © 2024 IEEE.

Addressing the challenge of backdoor attacks in federated learning (FL), various defense schemes are examined, resulting in the proposal of a comprehensive strategy that incorporates both client-side and server-side measures. This defense strategy is based on Dropout and LOF (Local Outlier Factor) outlier detection techniques. The model's resilience against data poisoning is enhanced by applying the Dropout technique on the client side. At the same time, the LOF outlier detection algorithm is utilized on the server side to identify potential abnormal model updates. Experimental results highlight the effectiveness of the proposed strategy, demonstrating a significant reduction in the Attack Success Rate (ASR) from 88.11% to 1.62% on the FMNIST dataset, and from 95.45% to only 0.25% on the EMNIST dataset. The success rate of backdoor attacks is notably diminished, confirming the strategy's strong backdoor defense capabilities. © 2024 IEEE.

With advanced artificial intelligence and deep learning techniques, a growing number of data sources are playing more and more critical roles in planning and operating transportation services. The General Transit Feed Specification (GTFS), with standard open-source data in both static and real-time formats, is being widely used in public transport planning and operation management. However, compared to other extensively studied data sources such as smart card data and GPS trajectory data, the GTFS data lacks proper investigation yet. Utilization of the GTFS data is challenging for both transport planners and researchers due to its difficulty and complexity of understanding, processing, and leveraging the raw data. In this paper, a GTFS data acquisition and processing framework is proposed to offer an efficient and effective benchmark tool for converting and fusing the GTFS data to a ready-to-use format. To validate and test the proposed framework, a multivariate multistep Long Short-Term Memory is developed to predict train delay with minor anomaly in Sydney as a case study. The contribution of this new framework will render great potential for broader applications and deeper research.

Distance metric learning (DML) aims to find an appropriate way to reveal the underlying data relationship. It is critical in many machine learning, pattern recognition and data mining algorithms, and usually require large amount of label information (such as class labels or pair/triplet constraints) to achieve satisfactory performance. However, the label information may be insufficient in real-world applications due to the high-labeling cost, and DML may fail in this case. Transfer metric learning (TML) is able to mitigate this issue for DML in the domain of interest (target domain) by leveraging knowledge/information from other related domains (source domains). Although achieved a certain level of development, TML has limited success in various aspects such as selective transfer, theoretical understanding, handling complex data, big data and extreme cases. In this survey, we present a systematic review of the TML literature. In particular, we group TML into different categories according to different settings and metric transfer strategies, such as direct metric approximation, subspace approximation, distance approximation, and distribution approximation. A summarization and insightful discussion of the various TML approaches and their applications will be presented. Finally, we indicate some challenges and provide possible future directions.

Given a context knowledge base (KB) and a corresponding question, the Knowledge Base Question Answering task aims to retrieve correct answer entities from this KB. Despite sophisticated retrieval algorithms, the impact of the low-resource (incomplete) KB is not fully exploited, where contributing components (i.e. key entities and/or relations) may be absent for question answering. To effectively address this problem, we propose a contrastive regularization based method, which is motivated by the learn-by-analogy capability from human readers. Specifically, the proposed work includes two major modules: the knowledge extension and sMoCo module. The former aims at exploiting the latent knowledge from the context KB and generating auxiliary information in the form of question-answer pairs. The later module utilizes those additional pairs and applies the contrastive regularization to learn informative representations, that making hard positive pairs attracted and hard negative pairs separated. Empirically, we achieved the state-of-the-art performance on the WebQuestionsSP dataset and the effectiveness of proposed modules is also evaluated. © Findings of the Association for Computational Linguistics: NAACL 2022 - Findings.

MGSR: 2D/3D MUTUAL-BOOSTED GAUSSIAN SPLATTING FOR HIGH-FIDELITY SURFACE RECONSTRUCTION UNDER VARIOUS LIGHT CONDITIONS

Novel view synthesis (NVS) and surface reconstruction (SR) are essential tasks in 3D Gaussian Splatting (3D-GS). Despite recent progress, these tasks are often addressed independently, with GS-based rendering methods struggling under diverse light conditions and failing to produce accurate surfaces, while GS-based reconstruction methods frequently compromise rendering quality. This raises a central question: must rendering and reconstruction always involve a trade-off? To address this, we propose MGSR, a 2D/3D Mutual-boosted Gaussian splatting for Surface Reconstruction that enhances both rendering quality and 3D reconstruction accuracy. MGSR introduces two branches—one based on 2D-GS and the other on 3D-GS. The 2D-GS branch excels in surface reconstruction, providing precise geometry information to the 3D-GS branch. Leveraging this geometry, the 3D-GS branch employs a geometry-guided illumination decomposition module that captures reflected and transmitted components, enabling realistic rendering under varied light conditions. Using the transmitted component as supervision, the 2D-GS branch also achieves high-fidelity surface reconstruction. Throughout the optimization process, the 2D-GS and 3D-GS branches undergo alternating optimization, providing mutual supervision. Prior to this, each branch completes an independent warm-up phase, with an early stopping strategy implemented to reduce computational costs. We evaluate MGSR on a diverse set of synthetic and real-world datasets, at both object and scene levels, demonstrating strong performance in rendering and surface reconstruction. Every application in a smart city environment like the smart grid,health monitoring, security, and surveillance generates non-stationary datastreams. Due to such nature, the statistical properties of data changes overtime, leading to class imbalance and concept drift issues. Both these issuescause model performance degradation. Most of the current work has beenfocused on developing an ensemble strategy by training a new classifier on thelatest data to resolve the issue. These techniques suffer while training the newclassifier if the data is imbalanced. Also, the class imbalance ratio may changegreatly from one input stream to another, making the problem more *** existing solutions proposed for addressing the combined issue of classimbalance and concept drift are lacking in understating of correlation of oneproblem with the other. This work studies the association between conceptdrift and class imbalance ratio and then demonstrates how changes in classimbalance ratio along with concept drift affect the classifier’s *** analyzed the effect of both the issues on minority and majority classesindividually. To do this, we conducted experiments on benchmark datasetsusing state-of-the-art classifiers especially designed for data stream ***, recall, F1 score, and geometric mean were used to measure theperformance. Our findings show that when both class imbalance and conceptdrift problems occur together the performance can decrease up to 15%. Ourresults also show that the increase in the imbalance ratio can cause a 10% to15% decrease in the precision scores of both minority and majority *** study findings may help in designing intelligent and adaptive solutionsthat can cope with the challenges of non-stationary data streams like conceptdrift and class imbalance.

HOFD: An Outdated Fact Detector for Knowledge Bases

Knowledge bases (KBs), which store high-quality information, are crucial for many applications, such as enhancing search results and serving as external sources for data cleaning. Not surprisingly, there exist outdated facts in most KBs due to the rapid change of information. Naturally, it is important to keep KBs up-to-date. Traditional wisdom has investigated the problem of using reference data (such as new facts extracted from the news) to detect outdated facts in KBs. However, existing approaches can only cover a small percentage of facts in KBs. In this paper, we propose HOFD, a novel human-in-the-loop approach for outdated fact detection in KBs. HOFD trains a binary classifier using features such as historical update frequency and update time of a fact to compute the likelihood of a fact in a KB to be outdated. Then, HOFD interacts with humans to verify whether a fact with high likelihood is indeed outdated. In addition, HOFD also uses logical rules to detect more outdated facts based on human feedback. The outdated facts detected by the logical rules will also be fed back to train the ML model further for data augmentation. Extensive experiments on real-world KBs, such as Yago and DBpedia, show the effectiveness of our solution. © 1989-2012 IEEE.

Prostate cancer is a prevalent form of cancer among men, with a high rate of occurrence but relatively lower mortality compared to other types of cancer. Early detection is crucial because it allows for earlier intervention, potentially preventing progression to more severe stages, and improving patient outcomes. However, human diagnosis is time-consuming and inefficient, an autonomous early detection system is essential for saving lives. To address this challenge, we propose a novel MoE-MRIViT framework that uses advanced machine learning and computer vision techniques to analyze MRI images and identify features indicative of prostate cancer. The system processes the data using a vision transformer to extract precise prostate cancer features from MRI scans, and uses attention mechanisms to focus on significant areas. Through the MoE-MRIViT intervention in two stages, we have achieved superior results compared to the state-of-the-art (SOTA) methods. Experimental results demonstrate that our model achieves an impressive accuracy of 94.84%, outperforming the ResNet-101 and the basic ViT models, which achieve accuracies of 89.4% and 92.31%, respectively. © 2024 IEEE.
