A central problem in the study of open quantum systems is the characterisation of non-Markovian processes, where an environment retains memory of its interaction with the system. A key distinction is whether or not this memory can be simulated classically, as this can lead to efficient modelling and noise mitigation. Powerful tools have been developed recently within the process matrix formalism, a framework that conveniently characterises all multi-time correlations through a sequence of measurements. This leads to a detailed classification of classical and quantum-memory processes and provides operational procedures to distinguish between them. However, these results leave open the question of what type of system-environment interactions lead to classical memory. More generally, process-matrix methods lack a direct connection to joint system-environment evolution, a cornerstone of open-system modelling. In this work, we characterise Hamiltonian and circuit-based models of system-environment interactions leading to classical memory. We show that general time-dependent Hamiltonians with product eigenstates, and where the environment’s eigenstates form a time-independent, orthonormal basis, always produce a particular type of classical memory: probabilistic mixtures of unitary processes. Additionally, we show that the most general type of classical-memory processes can be generated by a quantum circuit in which system and environment interact through a specific class of controlled unitaries. Analyzing and evaluating students’ progress in any learning environment is stressful and time consuming if done using traditional analysis methods. This is further exasperated by the increasing number of students due to the shift of focus toward integrating the Internet technologies in education and the focus of academic institutions on moving toward e-Learning, blended, or online learning models. As a result, the topic of student performance prediction has become a vibrant research area in recent years. To address this, machine learning and data mining techniques have emerged as a viable solution. To that end, this work proposes the use of deep learning techniques (CNN and RNN-LSTM) to predict the students’ performance at the midpoint stage of the online course delivery using three distinct datasets collected from three different regions of the world. Experimental results show that deep learning models have promising performance as they outperform other optimized traditional ML models in two of the three considered datasets while also having comparable performance for the third dataset. In the realm of data mining, outlier detection has emerged as a pivotal research focus, aimed at uncovering anomalies within datasets to extract meaningful and valuable insights. The objective is to leverage data mining methodologies to pinpoint anomalies within datasets, thereby revealing crucial and enlightening information. Herein, we introduce a groundbreaking outlier detection methodology, ODMGIS, that seamlessly integrates multi-granularity representation and information set concepts to devise the multi-granularity information set (MGIS) model. This model adeptly characterizes the distribution patterns of data points. Firstly, we employ entropy function and their complementary function as measurement tools to accurately quantify the inherent uncertainty in data with different distributions, and considers the sum of the two as a comprehensive representation of the overall uncertainty of the information source. Subsequently, an outlier score model is constructed based on MGIS, which can deeply characterize the degree of outlierness of samples, thereby effectively identifying abnormal points in the dataset. During validation, ODMGIS was rigorously tested on practical datasets from medicine and bioinformatics, and its performance was benchmarked against both traditional and the state-of-the-art algorithms, showcasing substantial benefits. This research not only contributes a fresh perspective to outlier detection but also sparks innovative avenues for exploring and advancing the granular computing theory. © 1993-2012 I IEEE. Metaverse is the next generation and the successor to the Internet. Various sectors allocated capital to adapt the metaverse due to its inherent importance. Cooperative Intelligent Transportation Systems (C-ITS) is one of the important sectors that can benefit from metaverse adaptation and integration. The C-ITS and metaverse integration give rise to new use cases and cyber attacks. However, traditional Pseudonym Certificate (PCert) authentication based on Vehicular Public Key Infrastructure (VPKI) cannot meet the new use cases and thwart cyber attacks. We present a Differential Privacy (DP)-based PCert and avatar update model to ensure the privacy of end-devices (e.g., vehicles) in the C-ITS metaverse. The proposed DP-based model adds noise to avatar attributes (e.g., color, behavior) to prevent avatar linkage during the PCert update process. Our method ensures that PCerts and avatars cannot be linked to end-devices and the previous PCerts and avatars. We simulate the DP-based method to investigate it in terms of privacy, latency, color distortion, and adversarial success rate, and the results show that DP-based is effective and practical for avatar updates.

Accurate and efficient diagnosis of COVID-19 remains a significant challenge due to the limitations of current detection methods, such as blood tests and chest scans, which can be time-consuming and error-prone. This study aims to compare the performance of basic and hybrid data mining algorithms in diagnosing COVID-19, using blood test results and clinical information to identify the most effective approach. A dataset of 200 records from suspected and infected COVID-19 patients, with 23 characteristics and one diagnostic class, was analysed. Nine data mining algorithms were tested: four basic algorithms (Naive Bayes, Support Vector Machine, Decision Tree, K-Nearest Neighbor) and five hybrid algorithms (Random Forest, AdaBoost, Majority Voting, XGBoost, Bagging). The study also integrated Response Surface Methodology (RSM) and Adaptive-Network-based Fuzzy Inference System (ANFIS) to enhance model performance. The Bagging algorithm demonstrated superior performance with an accuracy of 88%, sensitivity of 74%, and F-criterion of 78%. The integration of RSM and ANFIS further showed that a smart model could be developed for efficient pandemic crisis management, achieving up to 100% accuracy when considering key factors like AST, Albumin, and CRP. The findings suggest that Bagging and hybrid data mining algorithms can significantly improve COVID-19 detection, reducing time and errors in identifying exposed individuals. The study highlights the potential of combining machine learning techniques with RSM-ANFIS models for effective pandemic management and decision-making in medical settings. © The Author(s), under exclusive licence to Springer-Verlag GmbH Germany, part of Springer Nature 2025.

Game theory offers a powerful framework for analyzing strategic interactions among decision-makers, providing tools to model, analyze, and predict their behavior. However, implementing game theory can be challenging due to difficulties in deriving solutions, understanding interactions, and ensuring optimal performance. Traditional non-AI and discriminative AI approaches have made valuable contributions but struggle with limitations in handling large-scale games and dynamic scenarios. In this context, generative AI emerges as a promising solution because of its superior data analysis and generation capabilities. This paper comprehensively summarizes the challenges, solutions, and outlooks of combining generative AI with game theory. We start with reviewing the limitations of traditional non-AI and discriminative AI approaches in employing game theory, and then highlight the necessity and advantages of integrating generative AI. Next, we explore the applications of generative AI in various stages of the game theory lifecycle, including model formulation, solution derivation, and strategy improvement. Additionally, from game theory viewpoint, we propose a generative AI-enabled framework for optimizing machine learning model performance against false data injection attacks, supported by a case study to demonstrate its effectiveness. Finally, we outline future research directions for generative AI-enabled game theory, paving the way for its further advancements and development. © 2024, CC BY.

Weight assignment is a universal and indispensable process in multi-view feature selection. However, most existing methods overlook the fuzziness and uncertainty implied in multi-view data. This may result in improper weight assignment, degrading the quality of selected features. A cross-view fuzziness and intra-view uncertainty-based weight reconstruction method (CFIUWR) is proposed for multi-view feature selection. With the fuzzy rough set theory, fuzzy approximation operators recognize cross-view fuzziness and intra-view uncertainty, which are evaluated by classification-related measurement. Cross-view fuzziness and intra-view uncertainty are incorporated to develop a reconstruction mechanism for view and feature weights. An optimization algorithm is derived, guaranteeing rapid convergence. Comparisons with state-of-the-art methods on several real-world datasets demonstrate the superiority of the CFIUWR. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Switzerland AG 2025.

Localization of nodes is critical for acquiring access to diverse nodes that would provide services in remote places. Single-anchor localization techniques suffer from a co-linearity problem, resulting in poor performance. The reliable multiple anchor selection method can be computationally intensive and requires a lot of processing power and time to identify suitable anchor nodes. There has been work where researchers have employed nature-inspired algorithms over conventional optimization method towards localization of unknown nodes in WSN. These methods have challenges like longer time and lot of processing power to solve. In addition, these methods are sensitive to parameter selection impacting the ***, we in this research work have employed the nature-inspired crow search algorithm for selecting the suitable anchors from the population thereby reducing errors in identifying the location of unknown nodes. In addition, the weighted centroid method is proposed for the identification of the exact location of an unknown node. This makes the weighted centroid method and the crow search algorithm a more trustworthy and efficient way for node localization in wireless sensor networks. The Crow Search-based Weighted Centroid Localization (CS-WCL) has outperformed WCL and DV-Hop with the use of the best anchor node in terms of Localization Error, Total data packets, and Energy Consumption. This resulted in CSWCL outperforming other nature-inspired algorithms for node localization. © 2023, The Authors. All rights reserved.

Various deep learning techniques have been employed to diagnose dental caries using X-ray images. In this study, we utilized deep learning models, including Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) and transfer learning models such as Visual Geometry Group (VGG16), VGG19, ResNet50, and Inception V3, to identify dental caries in periapical radiographs. The traditional CNN model comprises three sets of 2D convolutional layers, followed by an activation layer, a max-pooling layer, a flatten layer, one dense layer, another activation layer, dropout, another dense layer, and a final activation layer. For the VGG models, ResNet50, and Inception V3, the top convolutional layers were frozen to prevent retraining of the model, with only the last layers trained to produce the required output. The accuracy achieved by CNN, VGG16, VGG19, ResNet50, and Inception V3 was 90%, 96%, 73%, 70%, and 73%, respectively. VGG16 exhibited the highest accuracy among the models. Hyperparameters were carefully selected using a grid search approach, and the results were validated using the Shuffle-Split-Cross (SSC) validation method. These findings underscore the effectiveness of transfer learning in analyzing medical images, particularly in the diagnosis of dental caries. © 2024, The Authors. All rights reserved.

In the context of Industry 4.0 and the rise of intelligent manufacturing, the quality of industrial products is becoming more and more important. Strip steel surface defect detection, as a key link in industrial production, is crucial to ensure the quality of industrial products. However, due to the irregularity of the defect scale and the inconspicuous defect features in the surface defect image of strip steel, it is difficult for the existing detection algorithms to realize the effective detection of defects. In order to better extract the features of defects and improve the network’s ability to detect defects, this paper proposes an algorithm for detecting surface defects on industrial strip steel based on receptive field and feature information supplementation. First, we design a receptive field (RF) module to replace the residual structure in the C3 module, which we name C3RF. This module can effectively increase the network’s receptive field, allowing the network to fully capture irregular defect features without increasing the cost. Second, for the characteristics that defective features are not obvious and tend to lose detail information as the network deepens, an extra information supplemental branching feature fusion pyramid (EFPN) is proposed on the basis of the original PAFPN architecture to compensate for the detail information that is lost by the fragile features in deeper layers. Finally, convolutional block attention module (CBAM) is introduced to replace the spatial pooling pyramid (SPPF) in the baseline network, which enhances the contrast between defects and backgrounds, and improves the classification and localization ability of the network. Our network achieves an accuracy of 82.2% on the publicly available strip steel defect detection dataset, which is a 4.0% improvement over the baseline. The results show that the network constructed in this paper can realize effective defect detection.
