Malaria represents a potentially fatal communicable illness triggered by the Plasmodium parasite. This disease is transmitted to humans through the bites of Anopheles mosquitoes that carry the infection. This disease has significant and devastating consequences on the health systems of fragile countries, particularly in sub-Saharan Africa. Malaria affects red blood cells by invading and replicating within them, destroying them, and releasing toxic byproducts into the bloodstream. The parasite's ability to stick and modify the surface of red blood cells can cause them to become sticky, obstructing blood flow in vital organs such as the brain and spleen. Therefore, efficient approaches for the early detection of malaria are critical to saving patients’ lives. The main aim of this study is to develop an efficient model for early malaria diagnosis. We used malaria images based on parasitized and uninfected red blood cells for the study experiments. We applied neural network-based approaches such as Neural Search Architecture Network (NASNet) and compared its performance with machine learning techniques. Moreover, we proposed a novel NNR (NASNet Random forest) method for feature engineering. The proposed NNR approach first extracts spatial features from input malaria images, then class prediction probability features are extracted from these spatial features. The feature set obtained from the data extraction trains machine learning models. Our comprehensive experiments show that the support vector machine outperformed state-of-the-art models, achieving a high-performance score of 99% and having an inference time near 0.025 s. We validated the performance using k-fold cross-validation and optimized the hyperparameters through tuning. Our proposed research has improved the early diagnosis of malaria and can assist medical specialists in reducing the mortality rate. © 2023 The Author(s)

Joint source and channel coding (JSCC) for image transmission has attracted increasing attention due to its robustness and high efficiency. However, the existing deep JSCC research mainly focuses on minimizing the distortion between the transmitted and received information under a fixed number of available channels. Therefore, the transmitted rate may be far more than its required minimum value. In this paper, an adaptive information bottleneck (IB) guided joint source and channel coding (AIB-JSCC) method is proposed for image transmission. The goal of AIB-JSCC is to reduce the transmission rate while improving the image reconstruction quality. In particular, a new IB objective for image transmission is proposed so as to minimize the distortion and the transmission rate. A mathematically tractable lower bound on the proposed objective is derived, and then, adopted as the loss function of AIB-JSCC. To trade off compression and reconstruction quality, an adaptive algorithm is proposed to adjust the hyperparameter of the proposed loss function dynamically according to the distortion during the training. Experimental results show that AIB-JSCC can significantly reduce the required amount of transmitted data and improve the reconstruction quality and downstream task accuracy. With widespread modernization, digitization and transformations of most of industries, Artificial Intelligence (AI) has become the key enabler in that modernization journey. AI offers substantial capabilities to solve new problems and optimise existing solutions specialising on specific problems and learning from different domains. AI solutions can be either explainable or black box ones with the latter being urged to improve since they cannot trust. Case-based Reasoning (CBR) is an explainable AI approach where solutions are provided along with relevant explanations in terms of why a solution was selected. However, CBR, like most other explainable approaches, has several limitations in terms of scalability, large data volumes, domain complexity, that reduce its ability to scale any CBR system in industrial applications. In this paper, we provide a heterogeneous CBR framework - DeepKAF where we combine CBR paradigm with Deep Learning architectures to solve complicated Natural Language Processing (NLP) problems (eg. mixed language and grammatically incorrect text).DeepKAF is built based on continuous research in the area of Deep Learning and CBR. DeepKAF has been implemented and used across different domains, test use cases and research models as an ensemble deep learning and CBR Architecture. © 2020 IEEE.

Accurate segmentation of Multiple Sclerosis (MS) lesions in longitudinal MRI scans is crucial for monitoring disease progression and treatment efficacy. Although changes across time are taken into account when assessing images in clinical practice, most existing deep learning methods treat scans from different timepoints separately. Among studies utilizing longitudinal images, a simple channel-wise concatenation is the primary albeit suboptimal method employed to integrate timepoints. We introduce a novel approach that explicitly incorporates temporal differences between baseline and follow-up scans through a unique architectural inductive bias called Difference Weighting Block. It merges features from two timepoints, emphasizing changes between scans. We achieve superior scores in lesion segmentation (Dice Score, Hausdorff distance) as well as lesion detection (lesion-level F1 score) as compared to state-of-the-art longitudinal and single timepoint models across two datasets. The rapid and unrestrained advancement of generative artificial intelligence (AI) presents a double-edged sword: while enabling unprecedented creativity, it also facilitates the generation of highly convincing deceptive content, undermining societal trust. As image generation techniques become increasingly sophisticated, detecting synthetic images is no longer just a binary task—it necessitates interpretable, context-aware methodologies that enhance trustworthiness and transparency. However, existing detection models primarily focus on classification, offering limited explanatory insights into image authenticity. In this work, we propose FakeScope, an expert multimodal model (LMM) tailored for AI-generated image forensics, which not only identifies AI-synthetic images with high accuracy but also provides rich, interpretable, and query-driven forensic insights. To this end, we first construct FakeChain dataset that contains linguistic authenticity reasoning based on visual trace evidence, developed through a novel human-machine collaborative framework. Building upon it, we further present FakeInstruct, the largest multimodal instruction tuning dataset containing 2 million visual instructions tailored to enhance forensic awareness in LMMs. Leveraging the knowledge of FakeInstruct, FakeScope achieves state-of-the-art performance in both closed-ended and open-ended forensic scenarios. It can distinguish synthetic images with high accuracy while offering coherent and insightful explanations, free-form discussions on fine-grained forgery attributes, and actionable enhancement strategies. Notably, despite being trained exclusively on qualitative hard labels, FakeScope demonstrates remarkable zero-shot quantitative capability on detection, enabled by our proposed token-based probability estimation strategy. The capability of generalization to unseen domains is crucial for deep learning models when considering real-world scenarios. However, current available medical image datasets, such as those for COVID-19 CT images, have large variations of infections and domain shift problems. To address this issue, we propose a prior knowledge driven domain adaptation and a dual-domain enhanced self-correction learning scheme. Based on the novel learning schemes, a domain adaptation based self-correction model (DASC-Net) is proposed for COVID-19 infection segmentation on CT images. DASC-Net consists of a novel attention and feature domain enhanced domain adaptation model (AFDDA) to solve the domain shifts and a self-correction learning process to refine segmentation results. The innovations in AFD-DA include an image-level activation feature extractor with attention to lung abnormalities and a multilevel discrimination module for hierarchical feature domain alignment. The proposed self-correction learning process adaptively aggregates the learned model and corresponding pseudo labels for the propagation of aligned source and target domain information to alleviate the overfitting to noises caused by pseudo labels. Extensive experiments over three publicly available COVID-19 CT datasets demonstrate that DASC-Net consistently outperforms state-of-the-art segmentation, domain shift, and coronavirus infection segmentation methods. Ablation analysis further shows the effectiveness of the major components in our model. The DASC-Net enriches the theory of domain adaptation and self-correction learning in medical imaging and can be generalized to multi-site COVID-19 infection segmentation on CT images for clinical deployment. Vehicular metaverses are an emerging paradigm that merges intelligent transportation systems with virtual spaces, leveraging advanced digital twin and Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies to seamlessly integrate vehicles, users, and digital environments. In this paradigm, vehicular AI agents are endowed with environment perception, decision-making, and action execution capabilities, enabling real-time processing and analysis of multi-modal data to provide users with customized interactive services. Since vehicular AI agents require substantial resources for real-time decision-making, given vehicle mobility and network dynamics conditions, the AI agents are deployed in RoadSide units (RSUs) with sufficient resources and dynamically migrated among them. However, AI agent migration requires frequent data exchanges, which may expose vehicular metaverses to potential cyber attacks. To this end, we propose a reliable vehicular AI agent migration framework, achieving reliable dynamic migration and efficient resource scheduling through cooperation between vehicles and RSUs. Additionally, we design a trust evaluation model based on the theory of planned behavior to dynamically quantify the reputation of RSUs, thereby better accommodating the personalized trust preferences of users. We then model the vehicular AI agent migration process as a partially observable markov decision process and develop a Confidence-regulated Generative Diffusion Model (CGDM) to efficiently generate AI agent migration decisions. Numerical results demonstrate that the CGDM algorithm significantly outperforms baseline methods in reducing system latency and enhancing robustness against cyber attacks. Device-Free Localization (DFL) realized by the Radio Frequency (RF) signal sensing, is an emerging technology to obtain the target’s position without needing the target carrying any electronic devices or tags. Due to its through-wall detectability and privacy protection, the RF-based DFL is becoming a promising research topic in the Location-based Services (LBS) applications based on Internet of Things (IoT). Among the RF-based DFL approaches, Radio Tomographic Imaging (RTI) is a low-cost and novel computational imaging method to reconstruct the target-induced shadowing effect in the RF monitored area and then estimate the target’s position. However, the multipath interference in the RF sensing network often induces the reconstruction degradation in the RTI system and leads to the position misestimation in DFL applications. Addressing this problem, considering that the target’s shadowing may occupy a small spatial range and then express some spatial structure, this aricle focuses on the spatial correlation of the target’s shadowing. Then an RTI reconstruction methods based on the Block Sparse Bayesian Learning is proposed to explore the spatial correlation in the sparse target’s shadowing. Moreover, the actual localization experiments are conducted to validate the spatial correlation in shadowing is an important property to improve the RTI reconstruction performance and DFL accuracy.

Alzheimer’s disease (AD) is a neurodegenerative disorder that is beginning with amyloidosis, followed by neuronal loss and deterioration in structure, function, and cognition. The accumulation of amyloid-β in the brain, measured through 18F-florbetapir (AV45) positron emission tomography (PET) imaging, has been widely used for early diagnosis of AD. However, the relationship between amyloid-β accumulation and AD pathophysiology remains unclear, and causal inference approaches are needed to uncover how amyloid-β levels can impact AD development. In this paper, we propose a graph varying coefficient neural network (GVCNet) for estimating the individual treatment effect with continuous treatment levels using a graph convolutional neural network. We highlight the potential of causal inference approaches, including GVCNet, for measuring the regional causal connections between amyloid-β accumulation and AD pathophysiology, which may serve as a robust tool for early diagnosis and tailored care. © 2023, CC BY.
