Decisions made by machine learning algorithms have societal impacts, both good and bad. This study acknowledges the great good that machine learning algorithms contribute to society while also pointing out that there are negative impacts such as bias, discrimination and misrepresentation of data, etc. Algorithms often use either irrelevant or incomplete data to make life-changing determinations about certain groups of society. The algorithmic use of data that does not represent the true or actual ability of individuals or groups of people leads to digital phrenology. When algorithms are designed and tested outside the real world, it may not be obvious that digital phrenology may be caused. The ethical consequences of this problem can be mitigated if algorithms are not viewed as separate from the world it is eventually deployed into. Therefore, a more holistic systems view of algorithms, including their ethical consequences, should be taken. The purpose of this paper is to show that digital phrenology exists and that, once deployed, algorithms become part of a societal system where ethical values cannot be ignored. Various efforts and approaches to mitigate the ethical concerns related to unethical algorithmic behaviour have either done well in raising awareness or produced promising results. However, very little attention has been given to the explicit use of ethical theories as a possible approach to alleviating the problem. Therefore, two major ethical theories are proposed to assess the ethicality of hypothetical machine learning scenarios. A critical analysis of related literature and case studies is central in this study's inquiry method. Results show the existence of digital phrenology. It also reveals how viewing algorithms as a single component of a larger societal system can give a better perspective on the possible ethical consequences that arise from their use. The aim of technical education is to design a career-based curriculum that imparts a set of skills to students and enable them to contribute to a nation's economic progress. With their multifarious uses, information systems (IS) lie at the heart of modern economies. IS curricula offer several tracks for students to pursue career paths based on their interests and opportunities. To offer students an opportunity to apply the knowledge they glean from classroom instructions on real-world problems, capstone projects are essential elements in most, if not all, IS programs. As IS programs increasingly offer a wider range of career paths for students, the design and delivery of such capstone projects present a set of unique challenges. In this paper, we examine the set of challenges and share our experience from designing and delivering a career track-based capstone course for the first time at a large university. Feedback from students and faculty supervisors indicates that the course was able to meet its learning objectives to a notable extent and offered important pointers to future improvements in the course design. © 2023 IEEE.

Image steganography is a technology that embed secret information within a cover image to obtain a stego-image for covert communication. The transmission of undetectable stego-images via social media can facilitate secure and efficient covert communication. Recently, the generative image steganography has achieved promising performance with the rapid development of generative models. However, existing generative image steganography suffers from issues, i.e., the low quality of the generated stego-image and the limited hiding capacity. To address these issues, this paper proposes a generative image steganography scheme based on latent space vector coding and diffusion model. It consists of an optimized diffusion denoising network, the latent space vector coding mapping network, and the information extraction network. In this scheme, the secret information is encoded as a latent space vector, which is then transformed in the input diffusion model to generate the stego-image. Experimental results demonstrate that this scheme achieves superior performance compared with existing generative image steganography methods. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2025.

Efficient energy management is a cornerstone of advancing cognitive cities,where AI,IoT,and cloud computing seamlessly integrate to meet escalating global energy *** this context,the ability to forecast electricity consumption with precision is vital,particularly in residential settings where usage patterns are highly variable and *** study presents an innovative approach to energy consumption forecasting using a bidirectional Long Short-Term Memory(LSTM)*** a dataset containing over twomillionmultivariate,time-series observations collected froma single household over nearly four years,ourmodel addresses the limitations of traditional time-series forecasting methods,which often struggle with temporal dependencies and non-linear *** bidirectional LSTM architecture processes data in both forward and backward directions,capturing past and future contexts at each time step,whereas existing unidirectional LSTMs consider only a single temporal *** design,combined with dropout regularization,leads to a 20.6%reduction in RMSE and an 18.8%improvement in MAE over conventional unidirectional LSTMs,demonstrating a substantial enhancement in prediction accuracy and *** to existing models—including SVM,Random Forest,MLP,ANN,and CNN—the proposed model achieves the lowest MAE of 0.0831 and RMSE of 0.2213 during testing,significantly outperforming these *** results highlight the model’s superior ability to navigate the complexities of energy usage patterns,reinforcing its potential application in AI-driven IoT and cloud-enabled energy management systems for cognitive *** integrating advanced machine learning techniqueswith IoT and cloud infrastructure,this research contributes to the development of intelligent,sustainable urban environments.

Blockchain, as an emerging technology, has been widely studied by the researchers from academia and industry. Alliance chain, as an important form of blockchain, is often applied to smart grids, smart city and the Internet of Things to ensure the authenticity and reliability of data. Practical Byzantine Fault Tolerance (PBFT) algorithm is a key technology to ensure data consistency in the alliance chains, and it plays a critical role in improving system performance, security and scalability. However, with the increase of the number of nodes and transactions, the ability of PBFT to process transactions is challenged. In particular, PBFT’s linear transaction processing also limits its ability to process transactions in parallel. In view of the problems existing in PBFT, this paper studies the consensus mechanism optimization, and puts forward a consensus mechanism with better performance. In this paper, in order to solve the problem of weak parallel transaction processing capability of PBFT, we propose a novel Consensus Mechanism based on Dynamic Sharding (CMDS). CMDS firstly constructs a dynamic fragmentation model based on consistent hash algorithm to segment nodes, and then constructs a voting consensus mechanism based on reputation weight to achieve global state consistency. The experimental results show that CMDS can significantly improve the ability of parallel transaction processing and the performance of blockchain system. © IFIP International Federation for information Processing 2025.

This paper describes PULSAR, our system submission at the ImageClef 2023 MediQA-Sum task on summarising patient-doctor dialogues into clinical records. The proposed framework relies on domain-specific pre-training, to produce a specialised language model which is trained on task-specific natural data augmented by synthetic data generated by a black-box LLM. We find limited evidence towards the efficacy of domain-specific pre-training and data augmentation, while scaling up the language model yields the best performance gains. Deterministic transmission refers to the guaranteed delivery of data to its destination within a specific time frame along an optimal route, making it an indispensable prerequisite for the operation of autonomous vehicles. The in-vehicle networks (IVNs) face significant challenges in the deterministic transmission of large volumes of perception and control data from and to various vehicle components. In this paper, the cooperative scheduling and routing problem among multi-area control units (ACUs) in IVN is discussed from the view of deterministic transmission, and a ResVmix method is proposed to find the optimal two-layer assignment with ACU cooperation. The multi-cycle queuing and forwarding (multi-CQF) mechanism is employed to schedule the perceived data according to different quality of service (QoS) requirements. The cooperation among multiple ACUs enables deterministic routing of data. The two-layer optimization problems on multi-CQF and ACU are formulated as a+ decentralized partially observable Markov decision processes (Dec-POMDP) and solved using the enhanced multi-agent deep reinforcement learning (MADRL) method. Simulation results demonstrate that ResVmix significantly enhances the deterministic transmission performance of IVN. Compared to traditional shortest path algorithms and state-of-the-art MADRL methods, ResVmix achieves a 22.4% increase in arrival rate and a 20.1% increase in confirmed arrivals, respectively. IEEE

The DR becomes increasingly common, there is a need to automatically extract and classify disease severity. Due to diabetes problems, about 2% of people with this disease become completely blind, and DR complications make him 10% visually impaired if he has diabetes for 15 years. Furthermore, it plays an important role in the progression of blindness in middle-aged and older adults. If the disease is not recognized as soon as possible, patients can experience a severe stage of irreversible blindness. The shortage of ophthalmologists is a serious problem for the growing number of diabetic patients. Hard exudates must be found to screen and assist in disease monitoring and diagnosis. Therefore, Lloyd's clustering technique was used in this work. © 2023 IEEE.
