Prior research on AI-assisted human decision-making has explored several different explainable AI (XAI) approaches. A recent paper has proposed a paradigm shift calling for hypothesis-driven XAI through a conceptual framework called evaluative AI that gives people evidence that supports or refutes hypotheses without necessarily giving a decision-aid recommendation. In this paper, we describe and evaluate an approach for hypothesis-driven XAI based on the Weight of Evidence (WoE) framework, which generates both positive and negative evidence for a given hypothesis. Through human behavioural experiments, we show that our hypothesis-driven approach increases decision accuracy and reduces reliance compared to a recommendation-driven approach and an AI-explanation-only baseline, but with a small increase in under-reliance compared to the recommendation-driven approach. Further, we show that participants used our hypothesis-driven approach in a materially different way to the two baselines. © 2024 The Authors.

Sentiment analysis of Canadian maritime case law: a sentiment case law and deep learning approach

Historical information in the Canadian Maritime Judiciary increases with time because of the need to archive data to be utilized in case references and for later application when determining verdicts for similar cases. However, such data are typically stored in multiple systems, making its reachability technical. Utilizing technologies like deep learning and sentiment analysis provides chances to facilitate faster access to court records. Such practice enhances impartial verdicts, minimizing workloads for court employees, and decreases the time used in legal proceedings for claims during maritime contracts such as shipping disputes between parties. This paper seeks to develop a sentiment analysis framework that uses deep learning, distributed learning, and machine learning to improve access to statutes, laws, and cases used by maritime judges in making judgments to back their claims. The suggested approach uses deep learning models, including convolutional neural networks (CNNs), deep neural networks, long short-term memory (LSTM), and recurrent neural networks. It extracts court records having crucial sentiments or statements for maritime court verdicts. The suggested approach has been used successfully during sentiment analysis by emphasizing feature selection from a legal repository. The LSTM + CNN model has shown promising results in obtaining sentiments and records from multiple devices and sufficiently proposing practical guidance to judicial personnel regarding the regulations applicable to various situations. © The Author(s) 2024.

We consider the Max Unique Coverage problem, including applications to the data stream model. The input is a universe of n elements, a collection of m subsets of this universe, and a cardinality constraint, k. The goal is to select a subcollection of at most k sets that maximizes unique coverage, i.e, the number of elements contained in exactly one of the selected sets. The Max Unique Coverage problem has applications in wireless networks, radio broadcast, and envy-free pricing. Our first main result is a fixed-parameter tractable approximation scheme (FPT-AS) for Max Unique Coverage, parameterized by k and the maximum element frequency, r, which can be implemented on a data stream. Our FPT-AS finds a (1 − Ε)-approximation while maintaining a kernel of size Õ(kr/Ε), which can be combined with subsampling to use Õ(k2r/Ε3) space overall. This significantly improves on the previous-best FPT-AS with the same approximation, but a kernel of size Õ(k2r/Ε2). In order to achieve our first result, we show upper bounds on the ratio of a collection’s coverage to the unique coverage of a maximizing subcollection;this is by constructing explicit algorithms that find a subcollection with unique coverage at least a logarithmic ratio of the collection’s coverage. We complement our algorithms with our second main result, showing that Ω(m/k2) space is necessary to achieve a (1.5 + o(1))/(ln k − 1)-approximation in the data stream. The software development process mostly depends on accurately identifying both essential and optional ***,user needs are typically expressed in free-form language,requiring significant time and human resources to translate these into clear functional and non-functional *** address this challenge,various machine learning(ML)methods have been explored to automate the understanding of these requirements,aiming to reduce time and human ***,existing techniques often struggle with complex instructions and large-scale *** our study,we introduce an innovative approach known as the Functional and Non-functional Requirements Classifier(FNRC).By combining the traditional random forest algorithm with the Accuracy Sliding Window(ASW)technique,we develop optimal sub-ensembles that surpass the initial classifier’s accuracy while using fewer *** results demonstrate that our FNRC methodology performs robustly across different datasets,achieving a balanced Precision of 75%on the PROMISE dataset and an impressive Recall of 85%on the CCHIT *** datasets consistently maintain an F-measure around 64%,highlighting FNRC’s ability to effectively balance precision and recall in diverse *** findings contribute to more accurate and efficient software development processes,increasing the probability of achieving successful project outcomes.

Several medical investigations have demonstrated that Alzheimer's disease (AD) manifests itself long before the formal diagnosis of dementia. These studies have led to the identification of numerous ideal biomarkers associated with Alzheimer's symptoms. Consequently, the imperative for early diagnosis has become evident, necessitating a high-performance computational tool capable of efficiently processing vast amounts of data. Early detection of AD not only offers valuable insights into the condition's progression but also presents a significant opportunity to benefit from timely and effective treatment. This ground-breaking study pioneers an innovative approach to the early detection and diagnosis of AD by crafting a sophisticated model SVGGL, which blends the power of stacked VGG19 neural networks with the interpretability of logistic regression. Leveraging neuro-imaging data, specifically the insights provided MRI, and our model aims to discern subtle structural and functional alterations in the brains of individuals at risk for or in the early stages of AD. The combination of feature extraction from stacked VGG19 models and subsequent logistic regression classification yields a precise and efficient classifier with an outstanding accuracy of 98.24%. With such a high degree of accuracy, the model can reliably differentiate among healthy people and those with Alzheimer's, opening the door to potential early intervention and individualized treatment plans. The study not only sheds light on the intricate neuro pathological landscape of AD but also propels us toward a future where cutting-edge technology and data-driven insights, exemplified by our high-accuracy model, converge to tackle the challenges posed by this prevalent neurodegenerative disorder. © 2024 IEEE.
