This paper proposes a dual divide-and-optimize algorithm (DualOpt) for solving the large-scale traveling salesman problem (TSP). DualOpt combines two complementary strategies to improve both solution quality and computational efficiency. The first strategy is a grid-based divide-and-conquer procedure that partitions the TSP into smaller sub-problems, solving them in parallel and iteratively refining the solution by merging nodes and partial routes. The process continues until only one grid remains, yielding a high-quality initial solution. The second strategy involves a path-based divide-and-optimize procedure that further optimizes the solution by dividing it into sub-paths, optimizing each using a neural solver, and merging them back to progressively improve the overall solution. Extensive experiments conducted on two groups of TSP benchmark instances, including randomly generated instances with up to 100,000 nodes and real-world datasets from TSPLIB, demonstrate the effectiveness of DualOpt. The proposed DualOpt achieves highly competitive results compared to 10 state-of-the-art algorithms in the literature. In particular, DualOpt achieves an improvement gap up to 1.40% for the largest instance TSP100K with a remarkable 104x speed-up over the leading heuristic solver LKH3. Additionally, DualOpt demonstrates strong generalization on TSPLIB benchmarks, confirming its capability to tackle diverse real-world TSP applications. © 2025, CC0.

We identify and show how to overcome an OpenMP bottleneck in the administration of GPU memory. It arises for a wave equation solver on dynamically adaptive block-structured Cartesian meshes, which keeps all CPU threads busy and allows all of them to offload sets of patches to the GPU. Our studies show that multithreaded, concurrent, non-deterministic access to the GPU leads to performance breakdowns, since the GPU memory bookkeeping as offered through OpenMP’s map clause, i.e., the allocation and freeing, becomes another runtime challenge besides expensive data transfer and actual computation. We, therefore, propose to retain the memory management responsibility on the host: A caching mechanism acquires memory on the accelerator for all CPU threads, keeps hold of this memory and hands it out to the offloading threads upon demand. We show that this user-managed, CPU-based memory administration helps us to overcome the GPU memory bookkeeping bottleneck and speeds up the time-to-solution of Finite Volume kernels by more than an order of magnitude. © 2023, The Author(s).

Lung segmentation has become a bedrock in the effective diagnosis, and classification of coronavirus (COVID-19) from radiological images such as computed tomography (CT) and X-ray images. Since the coronavirus (COVID-19) discovery, several methods have been employed to segment the COVID-19-infected areas from lung CT images. One of the most popular segmentation methods is the U-Net model. U-Net is a convolutional neural network used for medical image segmentation. U-Net and its variants have become a more reliable architecture used for medical image segmentation. U-Net models have produced outstanding results in segmenting diseases such as COVID-19 from lung CT images. The exceptional results produced by the U-Net model have inspired various researchers to explore the potential of U-Net for various segmentation tasks. Instant delivery has become a fundamental service in people's daily lives. Different from the traditional express service, the instant delivery has a strict shipping time constraint after being ordered. However, the labor shortage makes it challenging to realize efficient instant delivery. To tackle the problem, researchers have studied to introduce vehicles (i.e., taxis) or Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs or drones) into instant delivery tasks. Unfortunately, the delivery detour of taxis and the limited battery of UAVs make it hard to meet the rapidly increasing instant delivery demands. Under this circumstance, this paper proposes an air-ground cooperative instant delivery paradigm to maximize the delivery performance and meanwhile minimize the negative effects on the taxi passengers. Specifically, a data-driven delivery potential-demands-aware cooperative strategy is designed to improve the overall delivery performance of both UAVs and taxis as well as the taxi passengers' experience. The experimental results show that the proposed method improves the delivery number by 30.1% and 114.5% compared to the taxi-based and UAV-based instant delivery respectively, and shortens the delivery time by 35.7% compared to the taxi-based instant delivery. © 2024 IEEE.

Digital twin (DT) is becoming a promising solution for vehicular networks to improve the interoperability of distributed autonomous driving systems. Mobile edge computing (MEC) has been introduced to provide low-latency services for DT-enabled vehicular networks at the edge of the network. However, it is hard to obtain the dynamic network topology for moving vehicles by the ground-based MEC system, which may deteriorate the service quality for DT synchronization. In this paper, we propose a novel unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV)-assisted synchronization framework for DT-enabled vehicular networks. With the proposed framework, an intelligent resource allocation algorithm is developed to improve UAV resource utilization and maximize the synchronization completion ratio. By leveraging an advantage actor-critic (A2C) algorithm, the synchronization decisions are obtained with low time complexity. Experiment results demonstrate that the proposed algorithm can reduce the synchronization latency and improve the synchronization completion ratio effectively. © 2023 IEEE.

Face recognition (FR) technology has numerous applications in artificial intelligence including biometrics, security,authentication, law enforcement, and surveillance. Deep learning (DL) models, notably convolutional neuralnetworks (CNNs), have shown promising results in the field of FR. However CNNs are easily fooled since theydo not encode position and orientation correlations between features. Hinton et al. envisioned Capsule Networksas a more robust design capable of retaining pose information and spatial correlations to recognize objects morelike the brain does. Lower-level capsules hold 8-dimensional vectors of attributes like position, hue, texture, andso on, which are routed to higher-level capsules via a new routing by agreement algorithm. This provides capsulenetworks with viewpoint invariance, which has previously evaded CNNs. This research presents a FR model basedon capsule networks that was tested using the LFW dataset, COMSATS face dataset, and own acquired photos usingcameras measuring 128 × 128 pixels, 40 × 40 pixels, and 30 × 30 pixels. The trained model outperforms state-ofthe-art algorithms, achieving 95.82% test accuracy and performing well on unseen faces that have been blurred orrotated. Additionally, the suggested model outperformed the recently released approaches on the COMSATS facedataset, achieving a high accuracy of 92.47%. Based on the results of this research as well as previous results, capsulenetworks perform better than deeper CNNs on unobserved altered data because of their special equivarianceproperties.

This study is an innovative investigation into the field of plant disease detection and plant health prediction using state-of-the-art machine learning models and Quantum Support Vector Machines (QSVM) for feature extraction. A diverse dataset of 700 images, including a variety of plant species and disease states, served as the foundation for this study. The study evaluated the performance of four machine learning models: CNN (ConvNet), RNN (Recurrent), KNN (k-Nearest Neighbors), and SVM (Support Vector Machine) for accurately identifying and classifying plant diseases. Convolutional neural network (CNN) model unexpectedly prevailed, achieving a remarkable accuracy rate of 98.77%. Accuracy, recall, and F1 score of the model further demonstrated its propensity for disease diagnosis. QSVMs were used to extract intricate features from pictures of sick leaves in order to increase the models’ precision and prognostication ability. The findings have significant impact for agriculture. And the sophisticated toolkit they offer has provided an important step forward in proactive disease management for better crop health. Carrying out an early intervention for disease can result in higher crop output, lower agricultural losses, and improved global food security. The QSVM’s application of quantum computing principles also opens up fresh frontiers for creating machine learning applications in different industries. © The Author(s), under exclusive license to Springer Nature Singapore Pte Ltd. 2024.

Alzheimer's disease (AD), an incurable brain ailment that is irreversible, affects thinking and memory while also shrinking the size of the mind as a whole. Alzheimer's is a neurological illness that causes severe memory loss and makes it difficult to carry out regular chores. The development of more effective treatments for AD depends on an early diagnosis of the condition. Finding Alzheimer's disease is a difficult and time-consuming task that requires a brain imaging report and competent people. This time-consuming and frequently inaccurate method of diagnosing Alzheimer's is traditional. There has been discussion of a different strategy that is quick, inexpensive, and more dependable. Better medical care and solutions can be provided with the use of artificial intelligence technologies. Due to distractions, technological flaws, cognitive biases, and weariness, human diagnosis performance suffers. However, AI-based diagnosis tools support physicians' safe detection and decision-making and are less prone to error. This study offers a clever and trustworthy method for identifying Alzheimer's disease and its potential early stage, moderate mental impairment. The given system accurately diagnoses Alzheimer's disease and its early stages from structural MRI images and is based on deep learning. The ability to predict whether patients with moderate cognitive impairment (MCI) may develop Alzheimer's disease is essential in clinical practice and has the potential to significantly improve clinical studies. To classify Alzheimer's disease and its prodromal stages, this initiative suggests combining MRI data with the Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), a neuropsychological test. © 2023 IEEE.

Modern SSDs achieve low latency and high throughput by utilizing multiple levels of SSD parallelism. Fairness is also a critical design consideration in cloud environments and has inspired great interest in recent years to study it. However, we find that excessive striving for SSD parallelism can inadvertently harm the SSD fairness due to the striped data layout. We observe from our experimental analysis that some common access patterns in cloud loads (e.g., high-intensity I/O) are not addressed by SSD parallelism, which can affect both SSD parallelism and fairness. In this paper, we analyze two address mapping policies with orthogonal characteristics from SSD parallelism and fairness perspectives. Based on extensive experiments and observations, we schedule a hybrid address mapping policy to achieve fairness of SSDs in cloud environments by distinguishing different I/O access modes and cold/hot data, while ensuring SSD performance. Experimental results on the latest block-level I/O traces show that our approach significantly improves performance and fairness by up to 77.3% and 62.8%, respectively, over the previous schemes with negligible cost. Meanwhile, it can also reduce the write amplification by 23.5% to 33.5%. © 2024 IEEE.

RETHINKING LIGHT DECODER-BASED SOLVERS FOR VEHICLE ROUTING PROBLEMS

Light decoder-based solvers have gained popularity for solving vehicle routing problems (VRPs) due to their efficiency and ease of integration with reinforcement learning algorithms. However, they often struggle with generalization to larger problem instances or different VRP variants. This paper revisits light decoder-based approaches, analyzing the implications of their reliance on static embeddings and the inherent challenges that arise. Specifically, we demonstrate that in the light decoder paradigm, the encoder is implicitly tasked with capturing information for all potential decision scenarios during solution construction within a single set of embeddings, resulting in high information density. Furthermore, our empirical analysis reveals that the overly simplistic decoder struggles to effectively utilize this dense information, particularly as task complexity increases, which limits generalization to out-of-distribution (OOD) settings. Building on these insights, we show that enhancing the decoder capacity, with a simple addition of identity mapping and a feed-forward layer, can considerably alleviate the generalization issue. Experimentally, our method significantly enhances the OOD generalization of light decoder-based approaches on large-scale instances and complex VRP variants, narrowing the gap with the heavy decoder paradigm.
